So easy to install and set up. Awesome to be able to silence false alarms near the kitchen without getting a ladder or letting it go off long. Does it easily from the app. Just found out you can integrate with alexa, via rhe ring alarm app to receive notifications and/or send help if you’re not home. The night light feature is awesome in hallways at night also. Soft white light turns on when walking under it.

Nice replacement for existing wired smoke detector

The Nest smoke detector was an easy replacement for my existing wired smoke detectors and look great as well.
Before installing turn off the power at the breaker panel and use and make sure you have a meter or other device to verify no voltage before starting the installation.
I followed the directions step-by-step and the installation went exactly as it was supposed to.
I already hade a Nest thermostat and doorbell cam so I was familiar with the app and the smoke detector show up right away in the process. The testing gives you a voice warning as well as both the alarms for smoke and carbon monoxide snd were plenty loud enough.
I really like that the app has a battery indicator so you know when the batteries need to be replaced, also love the built in motion detector that turns on a light when movement is detected. This is in a small hallway outside two bedrooms and a guest bathroom and makes it nice if someone gets up in the middle of the night.
With it being outside the bathroom there is also a test to make sue steam doesn’t set the smoke detector off. Ours did not.

I have 6 now, and its nice to know which alarm is going off when you have many (9) connected and all going off at the same time. Set up was easy except for one unit but customer service was great and the unit just had to be reset. I have had two different ones give false alarms and would not turn off when there was no smoke, not even from a toaster.. Again it was nice to know, via the app, which one was sensing the non existent smoke. My KIDDE alarms would not allow me know which one was tripping the false alarm, which always seemed to occur in the middle of the night scaring the heck out of the kids Customer service replaced the faulty detectors with in a few days. i am happy with these detectors and the motion detected night lights are a nice bonus. I will be replacing the final 3 soon.

I've replaced all the smoke detectors in my house with these Google/Nest detectors. Kinda pricey, but Best Buy had a great deal on them when you bought 2. Very easy to install. I love the nightlight feature. But best of all, no more nuisance alarms! My old smoke detectors used to go off whenever I broiled meat. These detectors, however, know the difference.

I absolutely love these. Not only are these the most featured smart smoke alarms, but the price is one of the best relative to others in this market. I installed ten of these into our new home. The interface gives me the ability to name each one within the app with a custom name. The one gripe here might be that the list of names that the system will "speak" out to you when letting you know there is an issue is more limited.
I can check the battery life in each unit individually. Each unit has a LED light ring that comes on when it detects motion below the sensor. Not only do I love the light feature, but I love that I can adjust how bright it is when it comes on at night, and I have the option to turn each one off individually if I want. I did have to turn down the brightness of the bedroom units because they pick up your movement in bed. The added ambient light throughout the house at night is a great added feature.
The one feature that I'm not taking advantage of is that if you use the Nest thermostat and there is an alarm, the system can turn your furnace off in the event of a fire. That would be great, but I don't love the nest thermostats and have Honeywell smart thermostat units.
The units were very easy to install and get connected to the wifi system.

The best part about the nest protect is that is disappears into the home. It's subtle with the night light and always present in the app, but it does its job well in the background. I've never had a false alarm, and it's worked every time it should have, plus connectivity with the app and alerts exceeds expectations. Had them in my last home and bought them again in my new home. Nothing else compares in the space.

These nest protects are easy to install, sync up to nest app and Google app, and have a built in night light. Never have to worry about changing a battery as they are good for 10 years. They are more expensive then my existing hard wired detectors, but they can sense both smoke and CO2 and the alarm can be managed through the app.

Doesn't Get Along With Humidifiers & Sick Kids!

Purchased seven of these in total, to replace (and add) smoke detectors in our home. Installation is super easy, especially since the cable is detachable from the device itself. Runs on a wired electrical connection as well as x3 high quality AA batteries for backup. The only drawback with these is that if you utilize a humidifier in an enclosed bedroom, it will detect it as smoke and set off the alarm. This has happened three separate times when we had a sick child, with a small humidifier running overnight for our little one. The room is maybe 20x12' in size - for reference.
The Nest settings have a "hot shower" setting, which I assume is to prevent this from occurring, but we have had it enabled since installing these and it doesn't seem to make a difference. Now when someone is sick, we take the device out of the bedroom (which completely defeats it's intended purpose) to avoid having the entire house set off alarms in the middle of the night. Annoying, but it's the only thing that seems to work.

My home has 4 wired smoke detectors. As you all know, sometimes batteries need to be replaced in these detectors and then the chirping starts, always in the middle of the night. Now go figure which one of the detectors needs the batteries replaced...
Few nights ago one of the detectors went bad triggering the smoke alarm at 4:00am. The old detectors don't tell you which of them detected the smoke so you end up running all over the place trying to find the smoke source just to find there is none. Annoying.
In addition I had to purchase separate Carbon Monoxide detectors for around the house.
The Nest Protect solves these issues. The Nest Protect detects both smoke and Carbon Monoxide. It tells you which of the detectors detected what in spoken English or Spanish in addition to the audible alarm. It will tell you which of the detectors need the batteries replaced. Installation was a breeze, just remove the old detector and plate, install the new plate and connect the wires to the Nest Protect plug. 5-10 minutes per detector. Not bad at all. It will take you some time though to configure their interconnect. For the first one you have to specify, via the app, which wireless network to use and the password. For the rest the information you entered already will be used. It can take about 5 minutes to configure each detector.
The Nest Protect is beautiful, has the ability to perform as a night light and is controllable from an app. It will test itself automatically and you can select the time period you wish the test to take place, for example during the day when no one is at home.
Overall an excellent product.

We realized our old smoke detectors were over 10 years old and needed to be replaced and I decided since we already had a Nest thermostat I'd try out their smoke/carbon monoxide detectors. I had looked at the original version a few years back but waited due to reviews about false alarms, but decided to take a chance on the newer version as the reviews were much better.
I installed two of these, one just outside the master bedroom at the back of the house and the other just outside the front bedrooms and guest bathroom at the front of the house.
Installation was straight forward, turn of the power at the breaker removed the old unit unscrewing the wire caps and connecting the supplied wire plugs for the new units.
After installation we began setting them up. Adding them to the network was also pretty straight forward following the instructions. We also did the alarm test at this point these are definitely louder than the old units we had and I like how the light also functions as a motion detecting night light.
Got everything setup in the Nest app and then did a second test of the alarms this time starting it from the app.
Then since one of the units is right outside the guest bathroom I tried to trick it into a false alarm, running the shower at the hottest setting for a good 20 minutes with plenty of steam coming out the door to the alarm. Nothing but silence.
Very happy with both the install and operation of these units.

I'm going to get right to the reason I didn't rate these 5 stars; I bought 2 of these and expected a 10 year lifespan. Each had a manufacturing date of exactly a year prior to the year I bought them. Nest app says they will need replaced January of 2029. I purchased January 2020. Maybe that's not the biggest deal to some people, but that's losing 10% use of my products. There's no telling from the packaging what your manufacturing date is, so if it's been on a shelf for 2 or 3 years, that means you're only getting 7-8 years of use when it advertises 10.
Now that's out of the way, I do have a lot of praise for the Nest Protect wired smoke detector/carbon monoxide alarm.
Installation: I opted for the wired models because I knew that I had overhead lighting or electrical junction boxes I could easily tap into. With a voltmeter I tested hot and neutral wires with light switches off. When I found 120v I shut off the fuse panel and I ran some home electrical wire to the light fixture constant power and drilled a 4-1/8" hole in my ceiling and added a remodel circular utility box. Connected the 2 wire pigtail that is included with the Nest Protect and mounted the mounting plate to the ceiling.
Next step before connecting the alarms to the ceiling is to download the Nest app, which I already had due to owning a Nest thermostat. Opened the app, scanned the QR code on the back of the alarm with my phone camera, and followed the short instructions. Mounted the detector to the ceiling and I was done.
Functions: There's a lot to like about these alarms compared to standard alarms. To start with, the safety aspect. When uninstalling my old 9v smoke detectors, I realized one had the battery in it, but disconnected. I believe I disconnected it last year because it went off after painting and forgot to reconnect. The Nest alarms do self-test, and being that they are wired with a back up battery gives you peace of mind knowing they will work if the time arises. You can silence the alarms by either pressing the center button on the alarm itself, or through the app. You can turn off the monthly tests altogether, or hone the time that they test to a set part of the day or night. The speaker is loud and clear, from the voice responses during setup, to the loud siren. The automatic (or always on if you choose) night light feature is perfect for us as I set these up in our hallway and the main walkway in our living area in our finished basement. Waking up in the middle of the night for a bathroom break or drink of water no longer warrants me to turn my phone flashlight on or stumbling in complete darkness.
Final thoughts: When I started shopping for new carbon monoxide detectors, I realized they all have about a 10 year shelf life. Most non-smart alarms were not all that much cheaper either. The fact that these are both smoke and carbon monoxide, and have more features and control makes them well worth the price tag.

Nest 2nd Gen. Smoke/Carbon Monoxide Wired Alarm

I have gone through two (2) sets of smoke detectors since my house was built and they had too many false alarms. It was annoying as they would go off in the wee hours of the morning and we’d scramble around the house trying find the effected alarm. After searching for the best smoke alarm on the market, the Nest had the best overall reviews. I bought seven (7) wired Nest smoke alarms and they were well worth it! They will notify you which actual alarm was triggered. You can check the status of the alarms, via, the Nest app. I just purchased the Nest thermostats as well and the HVAC system will automatically shutdown if the smoke alarms are triggered because they are tied in together once the Nest devices are setup in the Nest app. This feature will prevent smoke, if any, from circulating throughout the HVAC system in case of a fire. The technology in these Nest smoke alarms are the best I have ever experienced. I like the fact that they are smoke and carbon monoxide detectors all in one. You should be able to get a discount by buying multiple units as a package. Expensive, but excellent technology and features for the money! I have no complaints at this time.

You don't really expect a lot of features from a smoke / carbon monoxide detector, but the Nest Protect is actually pretty slick.
I purchased the wired version and with the un-install of the old unit and the install of the new one, I was done in about 30ish minutes total.
I have a Nest IQ Cam and a Nest thermostat already, so if you are familiar with the interface of the Nest app, the install and config is similar and a breeze to set up.
One thing that I did notice and was consistent from other online reviews is, despite seeing the green light on the unit, the app kept saying that the power was out or not connected. If this is the case for you, give it a couple hours and the status should be set to "normal" in the app.
Lastly, a neat feature that I didn't realize prior to purchasing is the Pathlight feature. Where my Nest Protect is installed is right between my bedroom and kitchen. At night time, the Nest Protect creates just enough light (sensitivity can be adjusted in the app), so I can see where I'm going in the middle of the night.

Just as expected, the Nest Protect was very easy to install in an existing space where I had a previous smoke detector. Instructions were easy to follow and the app works just as well. Best part is the ability to utilize a light that creates good light at nighttime for my hallway. I want to replace all of the smoke detectors in my home with Nest Protect, but they are a little expensive.

Easy to set up and install, and works with other nest products (ie if detects carbon monoxide will turn off boiler working with nest thermostat). The nightlight feature is a nice touch. I now have 3 through the house, this seems to detect earlier than my previous devices, so worth it for that to have additional time in the event of a fire.

It does what is supposed to do, it was really easy to install and download the app. The set up was simple. The only reason I gave it 4 stars was because nowhere on the box it said that you will need to have only nest products when wired to communicate with each other, I already had planned to replaced all my smoke detectors with nest products anyways but I was under the impression that if they were wired smoke detectors it could also talked to the other non nest products which is not the case. Other than that it is a great product, we tested it and it is really loud and I was able to stop it from the app.

So far so good with the Nest Protect. I decided to install 4 of these as I have a 13 year old townhouse and my smoke detectors were starting to act up. I really hate that by code all of the units had to be tied together as my downstairs unit would always result in all 4 of my units going off while I was trying to cook a prime rib in the oven. It's so much easier now shutting off the smoke alarms that result from my cooking with the oven. I also had a situation a couple of months back where my alarms all started going off even though there wasn't a fire anywhere to be found. So I can definitely say that I'm much happier that I can control/suppress the alarms from my phone.
As for installation this is so easy that almost anyone can do it. The only thing you need to be careful of is to make sure that your cell phone is connected to a 2.4GHz network if you're running multiple networks in your house. The Nest Protects only run on that frequency so in order to set them up you need to have your phone on the same network. Physical installation is incredibly easy as all the hardware is provided. It took me about 20 minutes to program and install 3 units on the 2nd floor of my townhouse.

This is an extremely well-made, carefully tested smoke detector. I love the fact that it ties in so effortlessly with my Nest to give me better accuracy in the Auto Away feature. I also really appreciate the nightly promise and pathlight feature. No feature is better than the Wi-Fi implementation. I have a dog at home and if the smoke detector begins to go off, I want to know immediately. The app will notify you the moment anything is wrong and even gives you the option to call for help (you have to set this up, fair warning). The setup was surprisingly simple and was a perfect fit in place of my old smoke detector. If I can install this item, anyone can!
This is another great Nest product I would recommend to anyone. I'm going to Best Buy today and I'm picking up one for each bedroom as I see the benefit certainly outweighing the price. I would HIGHLY suggest anyone installing this unit to go to either the YouTube channel for Nest or support.nest.com and checking out the installation guide for the Nest Protect. It breaks down the process and shows you exactly what to expect when you install it, which is spot-on in accuracy. The documentation that comes inside the box is helpful and very clear, but I'm more of a visual/kinesthetic learner, which makes the video easier to follow in terms of expectation.

I was skeptical about this product giving the price but once I pulled the trigger I was glad I did. The monthly tests are nice and being they are linked to the app helps if you step away and they detect smoke. You can turn off the alarms via the app or the device. Plus they have built in night lights which is a nice added touch.

I bought the Nest Protect alarm because after 4 false middle of the night alarm activations in past 12 months with a new born in the house, I've gone a bit mental about not being able to just shut the old (2 year old) Kiddie alarms off with one touch.
Here's what's great about this Nest Protect. First the app is easy to use, it takes longer to set up the device on the app than install, but the app makes it incredibly easy to connect all devices.
Here's what I don't like. It's NOT easy to change your WiFi password once you already entered in your WiFi info.
In all fairness I highly recommend this product, it works really well, easy to install, the app is incredibly easy to use, you get real time info on each smoke/carbon monoxide alarm and you will know if one is getting a reading. Peace of mind has a price and Nest Protect is really good and worth the price!
