Programming this device is not as user-friendly as you would think. Directions are not straightforward and difficult to understand. Software needs significant overhaul. They should get people who are not programmers to actually lay out the user interface.

Once you add the thermostat to the Google Home app, you can easily control it using the app even when you’re not at home as long as your thermostat and Home app (phone or tablet) are both online. If your thermostat doesn't appear in the app, make sure you've added it to your account and fully set it up. If your thermostat is offline in the Home app, we suggest tying some troubleshooting steps here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9243422

The old Nest design where you turn the entire face of the thermostat is better. The side button is too sensitive and not easy to use. Having to use the Google app also is a pain. The old Nest App worked, looked better, and was easier.

The new Nest Thermostat is exclusive to the Home app because we wanted to create an integrated experience. Our long term plan is to use the Google Home app as the one place you can control all of your favorite Nest and other smart home devices, as well as Google Assistant.
