It doesn't. It pretty much act as another Thermostat and you can only choose space to heat or cool. One big issue is the sensitivity or accuracy. It was sensing a temperature difference of 10 degrees from the Nest Thermostat that is at the same floor and one room away. Maybe it is very sensitive to where you put it.

Walk into room, pick a location, check connectivity to the Nest Thermostat and if successful, mount it to the wall... done. Highly recommended if you have a Nest Thermostat and yes, I'm picking up a few more.
