The setup process was not difficult, it just did not work. Once the item was communicating successfully with the thermostat, it shortly stopped functioning - the item was later returned to the store.

Hi there dtcoronado, thanks for your feedback. We're sorry to hear that your Temperature Sensor reading is off by 4 degrees. If you're willing to try, we recommend trying out some helpful steps below:
      - Check your sensor placement. Your sensor’s location can greatly affect the temperature it reports back to your thermostat.
      - Try manually adjusting the current target temperature.
      - If you have adjustable vents, you can change the airflow to other rooms in your home. However, we recommend that you contact a Nest Pro before doing this. If you close too many vents, close them too tight or open them too much, your system may develop other issues.
      - Change your sensor’s schedule. The time of day can affect your sensor’s helpfulness. For example, if you live in a warm climate and the sensor is in a bedroom with many large windows, it may report temperatures that are much higher than those in the rest of your house.

If the issue is persistent, please consider contacting our support team for further assistance. We'd be happy to work with you and figure out how we can help you best by reaching out to us here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp Nest

      Hi Jake,

Thanks for your feedback. We´re sorry to hear of the connectivity issues with your Nest Temperature Sensor.

In most cases, range issues or wireless interference can cause your sensor to disconnect from your thermostat. If this happens, your thermostat will automatically default to using its own temperature sensors.

Here are some steps that may be helpful in resolving the connectivity issue:
      - Try moving your sensor a bit closer to your thermostat. Sometimes it may pass the connection test during setup, but will struggle to stay connected if it’s just a bit too far away.
      - Make sure there isn’t anything between the sensor and your thermostat that could block the connection such as mirrors and large appliances like refrigerators.
      - Check the battery charge. The Nest app will send you a notification before the battery is fully drained, so you should have plenty of time to replace it.

We’d be happy to provide further help with your Nest devices if you can reach out to us here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp Nest

My thermostat is upstairs but most of my living space is downstairs. So this makes it where I can easily change the temperature for the room I am currently in! Works Great! Also the person that rated 1 star just because it doesn't work with the older generation thermostats just needs to understand sometimes new features or add ons require certain hardware and that's not something that can be added by software. Unfortunately the older thermostats didn't have a Bluetooth low energy module so rating a product 1 star because you don't have the right equipment isn't quite accurate! 5 stars all the way!

      Hi Camerabuyer,

Thanks for taking the time to share your experience with us. We’re sorry to hear Nest Temperature Sensor didn't meet your expectations.

Different thermostats and sensors have different methods to measure temperature. A difference of 1-2°F between different sensors/thermostats is normally negligible. But if your Nest Temperature Sensor is measuring the ambient temperature as much as 5°F higher than other thermometers or temperature sensors, we suggest making sure the sensor is not placed under direct sunlight, or in a spot that gets hotter than usual as this would impact the accuracy of the sensor.

We can also take a look at what is going on to help you with it if you can get in touch with us here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/contactflow Nest

I have a two story home with only a single zone. The AC system does a pretty good job of keeping temperatures consistent through the house, but it does struggle in moderate weather when it's not running often. It's particularly problematic in the bedroom at night. The thermostat downstairs may think it's cooler than it really is upstairs. Even just adjusting the temperature down doesn't quite work - the temperature upstairs may climb 2-3 degrees before Nest decides its time to cool again. I had tried the Ecobee with its remote temperature sensors. This resulted in wonderful comfort in the bedroom, but their product is plagued with so many issues, one of which being that the Ecobee's remote sensors couldn't even work reliably 30 feet away in my home with almost no obstacles. So far the Nest version of the product is working well. It has no motion sensing option but I can't say I miss it since the Ecobee's didn't really work. More importantly, Nest's sensors range seems better, they are working fine to my office upstairs. Setup was quite simple, mostly scanning a QR code. The Nest app walks you through it. I had no issues. I'm giving it 4 stars because while great, I think they should expand on the functionality provided a bit. An option to average the temperature across multiple selected sensors would be a good idea. I think more customization with the scheduling instead of fixed time blocks. Motion sensor integration could still happen through other products ( Nest protect?). What's offered here happens to fit my needs pretty closely though. I'm happy its here, and I'm happy it works.

Perfect for hot zones and baby's room

We have been Nest customers for more than 5 years and we hoped that they would add these a while ago. We moved in to a new build home about 2 years ago and found that some rooms of the house are cooler or warmer than others. The builder had the A/C flows leveled, which certainly helped, but we still have a temperature issue in certain rooms. These sensors work well, but they aren't quite what we were hoping. I included a few notes below..... 1- If you purchase the 3 pack, don't pull the tab to activate the battery until after you scan the barcode. I mistakenly pulled all the tabs and then activated them, but I didn't know which tab was for which sensor. The barcode should be on the item like the rest of the Nest products, not on a pull tab. I ended up having to place them in the sun one at a time to identify which one was for what room. 2- These work VERY well for us monitoring the temperature in our baby room. I will note to not place them directly adjacent to the vent flow, but rather as close to where the baby is sleeping as possible. They mount well and it was great to monitor the temperature in their room. 3- I really wish I could set the temperature to be controlled by different sensors in different parts of the day. I work from home and my office gets very hot at the end of the day. I would love to have it sync with that room during the afternoon and the thermostat for the rest of the evening. Likewise, it would be great to tell it to turn on if the temperature at ANY sensor reaches a certain level. This would be particularly useful when we are cooking dinner and I feel like I'm sweating to death in the kitchen. Perhaps the next version will add this useful functionality. 4- I love that it tells you if the room is typically hotter, colder, or about the same as the thermostat. Our thermostat is in a bad place and we frequently wonder why the A/C has or has not turned on. Overall, we would recommend the sensors and it is probably worth it to get the 3 pack. This feature was needed for a while and we are happy Nest finally offered these as an accessory.

Awesome product, could be slightly better

Bought two of these, one for my office, one for my younger child's bedroom. My plan? Simple - schedule the one in my office as the primary sensor while the kids are in school (work from home), and schedule the one in my daughter's bedroom to be the primary during the night (keep her comfortable), and then for pre/post school and on the weekends when they're awake, use the downstairs main thermostat as the primary. Here's what actually happened. Bought two of these sensors unpacked, scanned the QR code (note: if you buy more than one and take the tabs out and get confused as to which QR code goes to which sensor, take a coin and unscrew the back, there is a QR code on the inside as well. Had to apply more strength/pressure on unscrewing the back ring than I had anticipated...), added the new sensor to my Nest account/system. Tried to connect to the thermostat downstairs, kept saying it couldn't establish a connection, move the sensor closer. Kept moving it closer and closer until I literally rested the sensor on top of the actual thermostat and it still said it couldn't make a connection. That's when I unscrewed the back of the sensor trying to make sure the battery was seated properly, etc. It was. Tried again, failed. Removed the sensor from the nest account, tried to re-add and re-sync, no luck. Then I realized that (for the first time in probably ever...) the main thermostat was not connected to my WIFI network, and hadn't been for about 2 hours. Seems like something the setup of this remote sensor should check for... like maybe a "hey, seems like your thermostat has lost its connection to your home network, and that's required for setup of this newly added device". I rebooted the main thermostat and the connections worked flawlessly, even through a few walls. If you have the nest cameras (I have one in each kid's room), and you use the default labels "office, den, kids room, bedroom, whatever" and the labels match, it will show you the temperature in the room where the camera is, which is kind of a cool feature. Anyway, then when it came time to schedule the priority of all the sensors I was a little disappointed with how "locked-in" the scheduling is. You have the options to set priority of sensors by "night, morning, mid-day, and evening". The time periods are all locked and not adjustable. You also can not set priority by the day of the week, it's just one generic priority schedule for every day of the week with locked time periods. Seems like it wouldn't be too difficult to allow this functionality (And for that matter custom label names for sensor/camera/thermostat locations). Final thing to note is the sensor is a lot smaller than I was expecting. About the size of a flattened ping-pong ball, and very light. You also have the option of just putting it on a shelf rather than drilling a hole in the wall and mounting it. Should allow you to experiment with locations or change rooms easily if it's not working exactly the way you want it to. Overall, though, great product, does what it should. Took 1 star off because of the lackluster scheduling that could be improved, and because the setup process did not make a basic check to see if the thermostat was still connected to WIFI and let me waste about 30 mins trying to set it up before I found out myself.

great fix for nest thermostats in bad locations

    Posted .

My house is roughly 90 years old and for some reason, somebody thought it was a great idea to put the thermostat on a wall within which hot water flows to and from the upstairs bathroom. As a result, the thermostat tends to read warmer than the actual temperature in the rest of the house. Enter the Nest Temperature Sensor. I replaced an older thermostat with a Nest 3rd Gen Thermostat and thanks to this additional sensor, my house is now comfortably set to a consistent temperature. Using the Nest app, I've noticed a 4 degree difference between what the thermostat *thinks* the temperature is and what the temperature actually is. Setup is simple - just open your Nest app, touch the gear icon, and touch "Add product". You can then scan the code on the battery tab and follow the app's instructions from there. Placement of the sensor is easy as well. During setup, the Nest app will tell you if the thermostat can't find the sensor. Just move it to a different location and re-scan. The sensor comes with a mounting screw if you want to put it on a wall, but the sensor can sit on a shelf or table and is small enough to be unobtrusive. The only drawback for me is that, personally, I really think a sensor should be included with the thermostat from the get go instead of being a separate purchase, like comparable Ecobee products.
