My nest was smaller than the existing thermostat so instead of using any putty I just installed this cover and works as expected. It looks clean with the nest.

Looks very mid century with the thermostat

I’m not sure I need it but it does look great as a backing. It’s cheap but not cheap looking. It’s matte and thin but sleek. Together with the thermostat, it looks very mid century.

I would recommend to get it with the nest, you could always remove it. Installation is super simple and easy. I would recommend.
