As to the trim kit in a general sense, If you have to hide some blemishes or in my case don't have matching touch up paint for the area of the wall and don't want to face the prospects of a involved touch up project, it will save time and money. With respect to the official Google trim kit, its a piece of plastic that does the job, but feels a tad over priced. as a personal preference I did not like the concave shape, I wanted a more convex shape to add definition. Would have been great if it was reversable, but as it was not I went looking for another compatible kit

However, as it turns out, the Nest already included a wall cover plate as well that was large enough to cover the wall gap. I painted the wall plate to match my wall cover and it looks good. I returned the product. The wall plate is needed for very big gaps. Most of the time the included wall cover will do. Pleased overall.
