The battery never lasted as long as I thought it would but would only need to be charged about once a month. Today however I have a "battery issue" and it is completely dead and it will not charge at all. Do NOT buy this if you do not plan to wire it in. The battery option doesn't seem to be able to hold up long term.

A great addition to your tech house
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.The new Google doorbell is without hesitation one of the best options to take care of your house security. The device allows the owner to see who is at the door at any time, talk to him, order the assistant to play a predetermined message, or receive alerts if the system identifies a person, a package, or even an animal. While some of the previous elements are already available in other doorbells, I found great package recognition or the functionality that allows you to pre-identify family members, in both cases the alert will include those concepts. Very easy to install, all start by connecting it to the power and download the Google Home application to your smartphone. The only requirement is to have Wi-fi at home and a google account. From the app directly, you have to click on "configure a new device" and choose the "bell" option. The app asks to scan the QR code on the back of the Google Nest Doorbell. Once recognized, some parameters allow you to identify the location. The configuration included in this process took me 15 minutes. I’ve decided to have the (rechargeable) battery doorbell that allows me to use the bell without the bell wires at the door. The specs are talking about 2.5 months of battery life, in my first full week, the battery reports (data available in the app) 83% or 5 remaining weeks. Installing the doorbell at your door is quite intuitive, all materials including screws are included in the box (only need a pencil, a screwdriver, and a drill). It seems that the only key element to keep in mind is the placement of the device 1.2 meters above the ground to have the best visibility. There is a video available on the web about the installation that you could also watch. Also, a video is available for when the doorbell needs to be recharged with two very basic steps and the use of a flat screwdriver. Once installed, the image is a quite clear, better day with very nitid colors than a night with infrared vision (in this case you see the images in your app in black and white) but in both cases perfect to identify your visitors. With the correct placement, I am very happy about the area of view. As I said before, the app works great sending alerts (they call smart alerts, and they are) to my phone personalized when a family member of a package is recognized by the motion detector. I love this!. One final component that is included are the “quick responses”, which are prerecorded in the language selected by the user that can be pronounced by the assistant after request. For example, “I'll be right there”, “No one can come to the door”. The functionality is ok but the voice sounds metallic, I prefer to directly talk to the visitor thanks to the two ways of communication. The alarms can be silenced during quiet time and for a specified time. Different from others, there is no subscription require (while is possible). Without, you could record up to three hours of video for free. Also great that if the power fails (no problem for the battery doorbell but if Wi-Fi goes out) the device has a local memory to store video locally. The final element, the google home app is a world in itself. In combination with the doorbell, the availability to change parameters, languages, including family members for recognition, define zones of control, battery supervision seems endless. Three elements on the less good side: - The camera size is bigger than other more discreet doorbells, your visitors will notice it at your door. - The pre-recorded messages, I wish I could be prerecorded by me with my voice to give a better sense of realism. - If you don’t have a google home speaker or a wired doorbell the notification is exclusively in your phone, there is no ring received. With all of that, I am amazed by the the doorbell and recommend it to family and friends.

The first one stopped working after a couple of days. It was fully charged but would not connect to my wireless. I exchanged it and the second one stopped working after a week when I had to charge it. I returned that one for a full refund.

Amazingly, it's not compatible w/ Nest.com and can only be viewed on the Google Home app on your smartphone. The only work around is loading an Android simulator on your computer, then Google Home app. Then the app will think it's functioning on a smartphone. Just stupid!

Even if your home’s internet connection is good enough to stream Nest doorbell video, you may have difficulty watching the stream if your phone has a poor cellular or Wi-Fi connection. In addition, a range issue or wireless interference can affect the performance of your doorbell. Sometimes it may pass the connection test during setup, but will struggle to stay connected. Also, your doorbell may be out of range and can become disconnected due to a weak signal. Wireless interference can give you trouble connecting Nest products or other wireless devices. It can also cause slow network communications or intermittent disconnections. So your Nest products might continuously disconnect and reconnect, or they may be slow to respond to app control. Your Nest doorbell could be detecting a lot of activities, as the battery life will depend on factors including activity, temperature, and camera settings that you select. The battery life can be extended by adjusting video quality, length of video clips, time between recorded events, and using activity zones to monitor specific areas.
If you have to charge the battery more often than you should, you may consider connecting your camera or doorbell to a power outlet with the included or optional power adapter. The power adapter included with the Nest Doorbell (battery) is not weatherproof and not intended for outdoor use. You can also connect your Nest doorbell to the doorbell system wires if you have one. Connecting to continuous power will keep the battery charged.

On-device processing also gives our customers smart alerts and Activity Zones, which historically have required a subscription. Please note that Nest Doorbell (battery), even when wired for continuous charging, does not offer 10 days of 24/7 video history with Nest Aware Plus, but your doorbell should still have event video history which will be deleted on a rolling basis after a certain number of days depending on which Nest Aware subscription that you have. Think twice before you buy

Problem is, it doesn't always catch the motion untill it's too late. For example, if someone walks into my drive way, the camera will trigger on when the person is already at my front door. It will not show where they came from, what vehicle they came out of or which side of the house they appeared. There is a HUGE delay from when it senses motion and the camera turns on and actually records. Defeats the purpose of having a camera. Your seeing the danger too late. Wast of my money. Also, only allows 3 hour of recording history to be saved which is terrible considering youll be paying a monthly membership for it.

The wake-up sensitivity of the camera/doorbell can be adjusted, so it can decide when to wake up and start recording. If the wake-up sensitivity is low. If the wake-up sensitivity is low:
- It decreases the range at which the camera can sense activity.
- It increases the amount of time it takes for the camera to wake up once it senses activity.
Here's how to adjust the wake-up sensitivity in your camera settings:
- Open the Home app.
- Touch and hold your device's tile.
- Tap Settings > Video > Wake-up sensitivity.
- Choose the High setting.
