I've owned Nest products long before Google acquired the company. I'd categorize myself as a power-user of Nest devices and believe they are superior to their competitors. I have a Nest doorbell, two thermostats, three smoke/CO2 detectors and two video cameras. I wanted to add this new doorbell to my Nest network as will be used as the doorbell for a second home. Since there was "Nest" branding all over the packaging, I thought this doorbell would be an easy addition to my Nest network via the Nest app. That changed when I realized that you can only add this next-gen device to the Google Home app. This is disappointing as the Nest app is superior to the Google Home app. I have extensive experience in website and app usability. The Nest app is far more intuitive than the Google Home app. The Google Home app is cluttered with additional icons which I don't use. The Nest app uses iconography which is clear and intuitive. It also groups icons in various rooms close together for easy access to adjust the temperature if needed while I check my video devices. The next-gen doorbell seems to be a great device. It can operate via battery or can be hardwired. It is larger and more sturdy than the last generation. One big disappointment is the temperature range of -4 to 104 degrees. That doesn't cut it when I own homes in the upper midwest where the temps can go down to 40 below and our other home is in Arizona where the temps can reach 120+ degrees. Google is limiting their potential customer base by not engineering the specs to reach into the extreme highs and lows of wether patterns across the country. I hope Google makes changes on the specs and the usability (via the Google Home app). In short, this is a great doorbell but it is only as great as the software and usability that goes along with using it via the app. Google/Nest engineers need to solve this and enable usage through the Nest App.

Hi Nabob, thanks for being a long time Nest user and for sharing your feedback with us about your Nest Doorbell (Battery). It’s unfortunate to learn of your disappointment with the Google Home app and with the operating temperature range of the doorbell. We’re listening to our customers' feedback to better understand our customers’ preferences and needs.

Our teams are working on enabling the ability to setup and control older Nest cameras in the Home app so users will have one app to control all of their devices. We’re also working on bringing full functionality to the Google Home app because we wanted to create an integrated experience with other Nest and smart home devices.

In the meantime, if you have any concerns about the Nest doorbell or any of your Nest devices, let us know and we’d be happy to help you here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp Nest

I was really excited to get this doorbell, because of the sheer size alone! I'm a pretty big guy, and I like pretty big things. So when I got it I hardwired it where my old doorbell was and got everything working with the app. I like Google products and I really like the fact that some of the features were free, unlike some of the other cameras I've used in the past. What I didn't like was the fact that the picture was longer up and down and not side to side. I really like the wider angle cameras much better, especially when it's my porch, because I have so much more to cover wider range then higher range. I thought the video was so so, okay, but so so. The night vision was pretty good, even though my previous camera had both a better picture at night vision and during the day. Overall I still think it's a pretty good doorbell and the price is cheaper, but remember, you get what you pay for. I plan to put this camera in the back of the house were I also have it wired for a doorbell. Overall, I would still recommend this doorbell.

First setup was ridiculously hard. Pointing back to google home and to nest in circles. Video and audio quality is decent. I am using it to cover my parking space and it does great job. One thing that I love about it is that it could be wired and/or run on the internal battery as well. I don’t know any other products that can do that. Pros: Could be wired or run on battery Decent video Decent audio Cons: Setup was little bit complicated

Install was easy enough, had a minor issue with setup but easily resolved. Picture and sound quality are excellent, very clear images of people and packages. I like how it links to my phone and that I can use the Google home as a speaker for a doorbell chime. My only concern is that it's easily removed so theft could be an issue.

I love my doorbell. Yes it's different from the Ring doorbell which I had for four years but lagged and skipped all the time. I would see people going but not coming, really weird. The Google doorbell DOES NOT do this at all. The only downfall is that the app takes some getting use to. Other than the app the doorbell does what you pay for. Picture quality I think is slightly better than Ring. I with Google makes a removable battery doorbell in the future. Battery does not take long to charge. I love it so far.

    Bad Quality

While the Google Nest doorbell worked well initially, there were some flaws ~1 year into buying this product that led me to a "do not buy" rating. 1. The doorbell battery doesn't last. While the product says that the doorbell can be wired and this is true, the battery lasted about a year before it stopped working and wouldn't charge. If the doorbell can't charge, it won't work, even though there is a wired connection. 2. The app interface to get to the doorbell is not good quality. The Google Home App is below expectations and is pretty lousy for a company that has historically been great. 3. Notifications did not go through to my phone on a consistent basis. Sometimes folks had to ring my doorbell to get a notification sent to my phone, even though it is supposed to identify folks when going up to my door. The pluses for this product are that the camera quality is great (when it works)

We love this item. The fact that you that you can get a battery operated one instead of a wired one was a big plus. We like that it recognizes familiar faces and it can see a good distance away, even at night. We will be getting the rest of the Google camera products soon.

    It's a doorbell, it's not a security camera

So I'm a Google guy - several Pixel phones, Home display, will be getting 2nd Gen Pixel Watch - so I was pretty excited to receive the wireless doorbell as a gift. Installation and Setup was relatively easy (though I had to use my own longer screws which required some modification). As a doorbell and package tracker it's good. There is a delay oddly - the alerts on my phone and the Nest display on the same wifi network can vary up to 4 seconds. Not a big deal but I wish they aligned better. Fair warning as a security camera it's pretty poor. The field of view is very roughly 100 degrees (not sure what they claim) but it's good enough for my purposes. During the day the color display is adequate, meaning I can make out who is walking by at about 20ft from the camera. At night, whether in night vision or not, that person is more of an unrecognizable shape. And yes the lens is clean. The worst part though is the tracking. My field of view is about 40 feet left to right (or right to left) and would be more but for some trees. With all settings at max the recording will start halfway at most through the field of vision. And this is usually some walking the dog by slowly. It's never picked up someone running/jogging. So again as a security camera it's pretty useless. Battery life so far, with a lot of tweaking of settings, has been about 2 weeks. It takes several hour to fully charge.

Hello there, Matrix. We appreciate you investing high on Google devices, and thanks for your feedback on Nest Doorbell (battery). Feedback like this helps us identify areas we can improve for users like you. Rest assured, this will reach our product team. Meanwhile, we suggest checking the doorbell settings as event detection depends on settings that you select. You can choose which events your doorbell can detect and record (people, motion, package, etc.). From there, you (and each member of your home) can decide which of those events to get notifications for. If an event is turned off, you won’t get notifications for that kind of activity. You can also change the settings like adjusting video quality, wake-up sensitivity, length of video clips, time between recorded events, and using activity zones to monitor specific areas.

Also, you may need to check for any range issue or wireless interference that can affect the overall performance of your camera. Sometimes the device may pass the connection test during setup, but will struggle to stay connected if it’s just a bit too far away from your router. You may also check for objects such as mirrors and refrigerators between the doorbell and your router as these items could block the connection. I have always wanted a video doorbell and I thought I had waited long enough for the technology to get better. Ha So I get the doorbell and charge it. Perfect. Then I tried to connect it to the WIFI. And I tried. I tried everything I could find online to connect it and nothing. I ended up calling the support number and a wonderful guy helped me. Sadly I could not connect it to my existing google home so I had to create a new 'building'. Now to operate it I have to go to my other building. Oh well. So I go to mount it and I dont want to drill holes so...I use command strips. It shows it is not mounted. I end up drilling holes in my door frame outside. Yea. So, its mounted and the video works great! I ring it to see if what it sounds like...and nothing. I was expecting a chime to sound on my google assistants...and nothing. So, I searched the internet and found out that the battery operated doorbell does not make a sound inside. So, now I have this doorbell that is not, well, a doorbell. and when I remove it I will have these two large holes in my door frame. Yea. I am not tech savvy and I rely on the internet and tech support for assistance. This time I think I will stick with an actual door bell

If you´re willing, you can use an existing doorbell chime that's already installed in your home. Disappointed

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Have owned many Nest products including thermostats, protect, Yale door lock and original nest hello doorbell. My Nest hello doorbell recently stopped working after 3years and it was an easy decision to purchase a new Nest doorbell. Installation was fairly easy and syncing to the app was confusing but I figured it out. The first disappointment was the fact that I could no longer use the Nest app for the new doorbell. I like the Nest app a lot and find it easy to read, set and monitor. I do not like the look of the Google Home app and its not easy to read or navigate. Second disappointment was the viewing through the camera. The picture is no where near the clarity and sharpness of the original doorbell. I tried tweaking the settings but the picture is still not sharp and a little grainy towards the distance, Next is the viewing area, I was able to view a much larger area (left to right) with my old doorbell. This view is limited and cut off. Not sure if there are other settings I don't see to enhance the viewing area but right now its not good.My property view is cut in half. I thought when I purchased the new doorbell, the technology & view would be enhanced but I am very disappointed in this product. Longtime supported of Nest products but since Google took over it seems quality and technology have dropped. Will be thinking twice when another Nest product needs to be replaced,

As an owner for a couple of wired Nest doorbell and cameras, I’m disappointed with this offering from Nest. First disappointment is I have to install it under Google Home instead of the Nest app. So while I can monitor smoke detectors, Nest security, doorbells and cameras under the Nest app, this oddball device is not part of that. That also means it appears you don’t have the option to add longer event availability either, like in the main Nest app. Additionally, the 3 hours is a disappointing block to review activity. It may take you 3+ hours just to get around to reviewing the footage, which by then it’s no longer stored. All this will be okay for me as this was intended for a back door with low activity. If this is your main door doorbell, I’d consider another option. Or if you’re not already deeply embedded with other Nest products, maybe you’ll be happier with it. Camera lag is low when viewing live. Alerts are as to be expected. The key thing is how easy installation is. Don’t need to be super handy. Battery life seems to be good for about a month. Overall, the doorbell is okay. If you’re deep into other Nest products and used to the Nest app, you may find similar disappointment though.

Hi GAHokie, thanks for reaching out. We´re sorry to hear about your disappointment with the Google Home app, and the limited video recording option for the free tier of Nest Aware for your Nest Doorbell (Battery).

We understand that most of our users have enjoyed using the Nest app with their Nest cameras. However, our priority with this launch was building a complete experience for our new cameras and doorbell in the Google Home app. We wanted to make the Google Home app as the one place you can control all your favorite Nest and other smart home devices with the Google Assistant. If you have other Nest cameras, you may set them up to the Google Home app. Here's how: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9893532

For the best experience with your Nest Doorbell (Battery), we recommend getting the Nest Aware subscription, as it provides more value for your money with features that include 30 days of Video History, 24/7 continuous recording, access to clips and time lapses and even customizing your own activity zones. You won't ever have to worry about missing any events as these videos and clips are all saved onto the Cloud. All these features can be viewed and controlled at the tip of your fingertip using the Google Home App.
