Think of wants and use
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I don't buy flagship phones anymore unless it is 1 year later because the notion of paying more than $600 for a phone doesn't seem cost effective. I actually won't pay more than $500 for a phone. In my use case a phone is for web browsing, managing my contacts through text, calls and emails and taking the occasional photo. If I am being honest a $100 dollar phone could suffice for me. My likes on a phone: works well on network, nice display, reliable, does not get in the way of itself and can take a good photo without being a pro. The pixel 3a achieves this while costing me virtually $299 ( I got a gift card after buying it for $399 unlocked, did not have to activate). The 3a has good battery life, a nice display and does not require heavy use of settings to take good pictures. There is no slowdown and it works fast enough. Don't get enamored with how the outside design looks when you put a case on it anyways. The main gripe I have with the 3a is that it is not edge to edge display. Large top and bottom bezels take away from a attractive display because it looks more dated. The plastic case looks fine even though it will be covered up. I also like that this being a first party phone in essence means that it is 1st for updates and gets 3 years of guaranteed updates. The phone is easy to hold works with all apps I throw at it. There are plenty of smartphones on the market, and at $399 I would not begin to tell someone what yo buy as there are plenty of great choices. Though if you want a phone that works out of the box and with a pure android experience then this is a good choice. If you can find it for $299, then there is not much that competes at that price range with the user experience you get with the pixel 3a. Keep in mind the processor (670) is on par with the 835 from a couple of years ago.

Avoid at all costs
||Posted . Owned for 10 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If I could give this phone zero stars, I would. Camera has failed less than seven months from purchase. Google support on this issue was worthless and you can find many reviews online about the camera issues. Programs are buggy at best. Threw a lot of money away to buy a paper weight. To call this phone a brick would be disrespecting bricks. Going back to Samsung; sorry I ever left.

Light and great functionality but restarts random.
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Love this line. Previously I had a pixel 2 and have loved every second. This phone would be just as great if it didn't randomly shut down on me. I haven't been able to see any shut down trend and have tried online chat help but they didn't do anything. They just told me to set up appt online but there are no appts because the stores in my area are not open. So disappointed.

Top notch camera at an affordable price
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I am a former Apple user who is tired of "budget" being $750. Finally, a top company has provided us with an affordable option that retains a lot of flagship qualities at a very affordable price. The camera is absolutely amazing. My wife has a Pixel 3XL. The Pixel 3A almost matches (maybe a little warmer) the camera quality. The night shot is on point, producing vivid and clear night time photos. I still need more time with the phone to have an opinion on battery life, but it is good so far. Pros: Awesome OLED display in a $400 phone. Stellar cameras, front and back. Great for easy point and shoot work. Fabulous night shot Stock Android - easy for any former Apple user to grasp. Guarenteed software updates Headphone jack!? Fast charging No notch design Quality dual speakers Cons: Polycarbonate build (use a case) Mid range Snapdragon 670 No wide angle selfie cam .....not much else I will continue to recommend this phone to anyone and everyone. This maybe a very simple phone but it is truly a game changer. You don't need to spend more than $500 for a phone with a great cam and all the basics you need. #teampixel

Great Phone for the $$
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. To start, my baseline for this review is not to compare to a flagship phone like an iPhone or Galaxy S10. I'm coming from a Moto G6 and have used Moto G exclusively for about 4 years. My G6 was dropped before it's case was delivered and for the first time ever I broke a phone-the glass back shattered but held together. I wanted a replacement but really wanted to avoid another glass backed phone. I also wanted a little better performance. Given all of that the 3a seemed like a great phone to try for not a lot more $ than a Moto G7. Performance - noticeably stronger performance. No lag on apps. I've read with interest the discussions about Digital Wellbeing slowing down Pixel phones. This comes enabled out of the box and when I saw these discussions I turned it off. No discernible difference to me. Bear in mind that I'm a moderate user. No gaming at all. lots of messaging and keeping up with the news. Some video streaming. Battery - my typical day with the G6 left about 40-45% on the battery. The 3a is leaving me about 40% but I'm still in early days, doing a lot of set-up and configuring. Fingerprint Scanner - The 3a is a lot more accurate at reading than the G6. The G6 location on the front though was an advantage. You could lie the phone flat and use fingerprint to wake up the phone Display - noticeably crisper to my eyes. Storage - I was a little concerned about not having expandable storage but for me it's not really an issue. I've got about 25 albums worth of music, 1+gb of photos and 50 or so apps. I'm not even halfway to 64gb yet. System updates - one of the big reasons for a pure Android phone is the guaranteed updates. Moto no longer provides very timely updates. The 3a however is only patched to the March security patch which I believe is the latest update. Notifications - this is one area where Moto does a better job. Perhaps its Android Pie vs Oreo but the 3a notifications aren't as friendly. You get a quick pop-up and then an icon on the lock scren. You can't find out anyting about the messages until you pick-up the phone and pull down the notifications. "Plastic" back cover - to me this is actually a big advantage over a glass-backed phone. The polycarbonite back will be more resistant to breakage. Personally, I don't care what the back looks like. The back on the 3a is perfectly acceptable. Glass front - so it's not Gorilla glass. The comparable Moto phones are an older Gorilla glass version, not the current Gorilla Glass 6. The 3a uses Dragontrail Plus glass (according to Google). This is the latest version of Dragontrail glass. Probably not as shatter resistant as on a flagship phone but then again it's half the price at least. Call Quality - excellent so far. I can hear people just fine and they can hear me Really lime the Google screening service though it's interpretations are a little erratic Sound - Speakers are ok but not great. Sound through my Bluetooth earbuds is great. Data speed - I'm on ATT. Getting about 40mps up and 3 down on LTE. A tad better than my Moto g6. So in summary, the only real negative I have is around notifications. I love the performance and the guaranteed upgrades. When you consider the Best Buy current gift card offer, the effective price is $299. This is a lot of phone even without the special offer. No it's not a "flagship" level phone but most people don't really need that. If you've been shopping in the lower end of the market, this is a great upgrade for a relatively small $ amount more.

partially working screen when tested, poor qc
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Tested a couple of days ago to find that a small area around the touchscreen and on-screen keyboard doesn't register. Now I have to waste time and effort figuring out how to get this replaced, hopefully with a new unit instead of a refurbished. Freakin lemons.
