||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Horrible phone. Horrible battery life. I used to love googles phones. Smh. It’s a shame they don’t do much different anymore. Phone gets so hot on the back that it makes your hands sweat and it’s just horrible. This isn’t of course Best Buy’s fault.

Absolute garbage
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This phone is complete trash. The must basic functions such as Extend Unlock, Fingerprint Unlock, Quick Tap Gestures, etc DO NOT WORK CONSISTENTLY. The battery lasts less than a day. The most frustrating and useless phone I've ever owned.

Bad Phone with Bad Software
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I had Pixel 6 and 7 and I switched to Pixel 8 - Big Mistake, the software is not good at all. I called pixel support complaining about an issue with notifications and they reset my phone to factory reset. Selling that piece of junk and getting a samsung phone immediately.

Matches the build quality of an iPhone really well
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The first thing that pops out at you with the Google Pixel 8 is how well they have managed to replicate the size, appearance and feel of an iPhone. I know phones shouldnt strive to be an iPhone but that is the gold standard that holds it value on the resale market. It holds really well in the hand and it feels premium. I am upgrading from a Google Pixel 6 and I must say that this is a very nice upgrade in this department. The Pixel 6 is big, clunky and heavy. Losing 0.2" of screen size is not a big deal since it now fits in my hand better. The question is not whether the Google Pixel 8 is a good phone or not (it is), it is whether it is a worthwhile upgrade for you. I think that Android phones have now decided to mimic the iPhone upgrade schedule, that being annual refresh and probably every 2 years enough gets changed that warrants an upgrade. Meaning, if you are a Google Pixel 7 user, the Pixel 8 is probably not a worthwhile upgrade. I guess if you MUST have the latest and greatest, go for it - Google had a pre-order promotion that boosted the trade-in values of all phones, and it will happen again on Black Friday. You will essentially pay around $200-$300 or so to upgrade. But I don't think going from the 7 to the 8 for that much is worth it. The camera is a bit better, the battery is a bit better, and the camera is a bit better. Going from the 6 to the 8, on the other hand, is more significant - the biggest being the improved 5G modem (the modem used in the Pixel 6 was terrible, some old module that ate battery). I know Google wants to boast about all the software features that comes with the phone, but at the end of the day all that matters is 1-battery life, 2-camera, 3-physical size/build quality, 4-screen quality. That's it. All those cool software features, like all the camera editing tools, the audio transcription tools, automation tools. They are neat, but all phones have something like this, besides the fact that you can easily download apps on the Google Play store which will provide the functionality if your current phone lacks it. With that being said, the Google Pixel 8 knocks it out of the park with the 4 items I mentioned above. I've already mentioned the build quality - I love how it feels, and the phone is now a mere 187 grams (down from the Pixel 7's 197 grams, and Pixel 6's 207 grams). 187 grams is only 16 grams more than the iPhone 15 (171 grams), whereas the Pixel 6 was a whopping 33 grams heavier (207 to 174). The battery life is A+ even with T-Mobile 5G network running. The camera is great (although it is pretty annoying that Google locks down the ability to take full 50 megapixel pictures with the camera sensor, the same camera sensor that is in the Google Pixel Pro. Just give it some time and someone will release a knocked-up Google Camera app that unlocks it, so I'm not worried). And the screen quality is A+ - the Pixel 8 chose to go with a 120 Hz OLED, which is a beautiful upgrade from the previous 90 Hz AMOLED seen in the Pixel 6 and 7. The next question is: do you get the Pixel 8 or the Pixel 8 pro. It is all the same hardware just a screen that matches the Pixel 6 (non-pro) in size (since the pixel 8 pro bezel is slimmer, the fact that it is 0.3" larger makes the phones exactly the same in size), a camera that has optical zoom up to 5x, a camera app that unlocks the full 50 MP sensor (although, again, someone will find a way to unlock it in the Pixel 8, so I wouldn't really worry about this), 500 mAh of battery capacity, and higher quality glass (Gorilla Glass Victus 2 vs 1), besides being 6 grams heavier than the already-heavy Pixel 6 phone. Me? I really want the optical zoom - after seeing it in my wife's iPhone 13 Pro Max, I wanted it. So I will be seeking out the Google Pixel 8 Pro in the near future. The extra battery will also make it worth the additional cost. Finally, I would highly recommend you get the 256 GB version of whatever phone you get. Thankfully, Google makes the cost less than what Apple charges. Apple wants $100 extra for the 256 GB version, whereas Google only asks for $60. 128 GB is starting to become what 64 GB became - just barely enough.

Solid incremental update with an AI kick!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I ordered the Google Pixel 8 to update my existing Pixel 6 and am pretty happy with my decision. The new phone is very lightweight, rugged and sports an improvement in battery life. The functionality improvements are more evolutionary than revolutionary but the real potential here lies in the inclusion of AI to a number of the features. This is exciting to me because it promises the potential for extremely powerful enhancements that could never be matched by mere hardware updates. The most apparent benefit of adding AI is with the camera and the image enhancement tools. These apps are rapidly eliminating the need for expensive and complicated external programs to produce professional level photography. The improvements often require no more from the user than choosing which version of a photo they prefer! The results are constantly delightful and will encourage you to experiment with taking pictures that you would have not considered in the past. The AI is also apparent in everything from customization of your phone's interface to security. Even battery management is improved. There is also a full suite of home life and health apps in order to fold your healthcare management into the phone. In retrospect, the only thing I might have done differently is to strongly consider the Pro model. I believe now that the larger screen and camera enhancements might have been worth the increased cost. Do yourself a favor and consider Google's Pixel family. You can own a piece of future-proofing that may save you a hardware update with some of the competition!

Good (mostly) step forward for the Pixel series!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Excellent build quality and Google exclusive software features. Still has plenty of bugs but should be smoothed out with each update. Screen is a noticeable improvement over previous iterations. Hardware longevity has been put into question given recent performance reviews. Still a great overall package.

A solid phone, but at what price?
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was due for a phone upgrade, since I was using a Google Pixel 4a 5G. So, how much of an upgrade did I get three years later and for 60% more money? First, let’s see how storage has advanced in three years. The old Pixel 4a 5G came with 128 GB of storage. The new one comes with a spacious 128 GB of storage. Yup, the exact same. The RAM has gone up from 6 GB to 8 GB, but the last year’s Pixel 7 has 8 GB also for less money. Of course, adding extra memory via a micro SD card is not an option, as Google decided to never allow that option, deciding to follow Apple’s lead in that department (as well as forgoing a headphone jack). One touted advantage of this model is that it features “Gorilla Glass 7.” I presumed that meant that it was tough, but my phone got a scratch on the display withing 48 hours, so I still recommend getting a good screen protector. But as to the screen, it is BRIGHT. My old phone was barely usable outside, and that was even in the shade. This phone is not quite pleasant to use outside, but is at least functional, so I consider that to be a big upgrade. It also claims a degree of water resistance, which is very welcome when taking it out into the woods. Wireless charging is also present, as well as an under-display fingerprint sensor that seems to work as well as a dedicated fingerprint sensor, so kudos for getting that right. One reason to upgrade is for a better camera, and this camera does seem to perform quite well. The main shooter is advertised to be 50 MP, and the picture quality is quite good under a wide variety of circumstances. There is also a 2nd ultra-wide camera should it be needed. Having a separate telephoto camera would have been nice, but Google reserved that feature exclusively for their Pro model. I guess that they couldn’t squeeze that feature into this model and still make a profit. But the camera does a good job, and even the macro shots are impressive. The latest buzzword in the tech industry is “AI” and Google has gone all-in on throwing every possible AI-ish feature that they can think of into this phone. To be honest, most of them are downright silly. There is an “AI” feature to make a custom wallpaper, but that is limited to certain keyworks (heaven forbid that you could type your own in) and being able to generate wallpapers is more of a novelty than a necessity. The AI assistant has the potential to be more useful in terms of reminders about upcoming events and suggestions, but time will tell if that pans out. AI has been added to help disabled people take better pictures, which is a boon for them, but not too much for the average person. There are also AI features baked into the photo editor which seem useful as far as erasing unwanted objects and sharpening blurry objects. One feature that seems to have a lot of potential is that they are taking safety seriously. The phone can attempt to detect a car crash. If one is detected, it will sound an alarm, giving time to cancel if it is a false alarm. If not cancelled, it will then dial for help. This is a great use of the technology. The final great thing that Google did is that they have promised to provide SEVEN YEARS of OS updates. That is very impressive. The phone will likely need at least one if not two battery replacements in that time, but this is a great way to keep electronics out of the landfill, just by making them remain useful. So, overall, this is a great phone, but I am still not convinced that you need to upgrade if you have a Pixel 7. I am also not sure that the price increase is justified. The Pro model with the extra telephoto camera is not THAT much more expensive when compared to the cost of this model. Still, this is a solid phone. Just don’t forget to buy a bumper case and screen protector.
