For many years I rocked both Android and iPhone because I loved tech and wanted to stay up-to-date with the latest handsets. There was even a time when I considered myself an Android guy before Apple got the hint that consumers wanted larger screens…reachability be damned. Ultimately, I found myself deeper and deeper in the ecosystem and my found myself not wanting to give up compatabilty features with all my devices that talked to each other. Recently, I realized that I was way behind with Android ‘know-how’ and leaped back in to Google’s world with a Pixel 6a. Now that I’ve dipped my toes, the only responsible thing to do is buy a Pixel Watch to go with it! First Impressions: The unboxing experience was similar to other recent Google product releases with a crisp white box and a clean presentation when you slide the cover off. Having the watch sit in the box with the band curved around a cardboard sleeve was a nice touch - almost like a real watch box. The Pixel watch itself is truly a nice combination of classy and sporty that I’m not sure its competitor quite reaches. The black stainless steel finish in the base unit was a nice touch as it’s a significant cost upcharge for Apple Watch. Beauty aside, it’s small. The size on my wrist looked and felt small compared to anything I’ve ever worn and I immediately wished it came in two sizes. I can’t say that I have a huge preference - square vs. round - they both have pro’s and cons, but 41mm is absolutely too small for a large man’s wrist. It would be interesting to understand the marketing background research done in the Pixel Watch’s target market. Maybe they realized that the most likely buyer would be a female fitness enthusiast, but not having a size option was a miss. Set-Up: Set-up was easy enough. I was able to power on the Pixel Watch and bring it near my Pixel 6a. I was required to download the Watch application which was fine because I was home on Wi-Fi, but I did find it inconvenient that it wasn’t preinstalled. Pairing felt similar to pairing any bluetooth device and I did have to re-try the entire process because a software update failed after the first set-up. For a first attempt at Pixel Watch pairing it was fine. That’s really the best way to describe it. Fine. Fitness: So I guess when you don’t want to invest in a platform of your own you partner with someone else? The set-up includes the ability to link to Fitbit Premium which was was a welcome surprise, but interesting. Fitbit Premium seems pretty blah to me. While it does seem to offer a well rounded selection of classes and exercises I would have much preferred better integration with Peloton. It’s like buying a TV and getting 6-months free of Paramount+ with ads. Sure it’s fine, but we’d much rather have Netflix. The one positive about partnering outside the Google ecosystem is that I’m sure people will be more comfortable providing their health information to FitBit vs. Google themselves. Advice: If you’re an Android user this is probably the best you’re going to get. The set-up, Google OS integration, style, finish features is pretty good for the price you’ll pay for this watch. Definitely impressed by the Pixel brand in that regard. If you’re coming from Apple Watch you’re going to be whemed. I don’t think that’s a word, but it’s going to feel familiar, but not fresh, it’s going to feel capable but limited, and you’ll be glad you have one but not excited when you put it on every day. It’s getting there. It’s a great step for the Wear OS platform, but not quite what you’d be used to.

I began my smartwatch journey with the infamous Pebble watch, which in turn, was bought out by FitBit and now Google in turn, abosorbed them. Weird how things work out. For the first smartwatch under the Pixel branding, this is good first gen of a smart watch. But it is not perfect. For many, this Pixel watch may be ok, but for me, and I am a power user of sorts, it falls short. Basically it comes down to how long this watch can last for a work day off a charger. The documentation says 24 hours and I cannot get that unless I am on powersaving mode, which is silly. I can get a good 14 hours with the always on display off and also the tilt to wake off as well. The other bad thing is that the watch could have done better with a bigger battery and display if it was 44mm vs the 41. I was hesitant in regards to the processor, but everything I installed on the watch, the watch handled like a champ. The other bad thing is that this watch does NOT charge via QI or wireless charging. No matter what people say, this doesn't work on any of my wireless chargers. Now to the good or great things. It looks cool and futuristic. Especially the black on black. It looks like a skipping stone on your wrist. Second, the connection to my Pixel 7 has been solid, no disconnections from what I can see. The band is super soft and supple. As for using third party leather bands, I believe you need to have the OEM Leather bands they sell to get to the spring bars. Other than that, you cannot use any other watch bands other than OEM. The screen is super crisp. The touch screen is responsive and notification and haptics are loud and strong. Not Pixel strong but strong. If you own a Pixel phone, you can attest to the erupting haptics. With the new Android OS, it is smooth. No issues running the FitBit stuff and playing spotify and connecting my Pixel Bud pros were seemless. This is the LTE version. I opted to try it out to see if I would use it. This is where you can use the watch without the phone. It pretty much piggy backs your number and has an eSim to operate on it's own. This worked well. No issues here, other than the battery usage that LTE is known to use. I opted to cancel that line out because of a couple of reasons, but that is a personal preference. Now going back to the watch bands. This comes with two sized long sides for small and larger wrists. Which is awesome. Would I recommend it? For a casual user yes! But for a power user like, me I have to wait for a bigger battery in this one. For me, this is the ONLY reason from being my perfect smartwatch. For now I wait for gen 2.

Having the ability to charge your watch using a different wireless charger, an option for bigger screen display, and a longer battery life, can be great additions to its features. Google has come out with a solid contender in the smart watch market. With a big emphasis on Fitbit health tracking, the Pixel watch is looking to take a bite out of Apple. Although, they're probably more likely to take some Samsung customers instead. The Pixel watch has all the features you'd expect from a top tier smart watch. Sleek, futuristic design. Water resistance and fitness/health tracking. Calls, texts and smart home controls. There's nothing really new to the game, so it'll be interesting to see where the Pixel can outdo its competition. I found setup to be extremely easy, even with my differently-branded phone - though still an Android. If you don't have an Android phone I expect setup will take a few extra steps, as you'll need a Google account. Being left-handed I was excited to see that you can set the watch up for wearing on the right wrist. I assume this probably isn't a new feature for smart watches, but my old Galaxy watch doesn't have it, so I got a kick out of it. As appearance goes, the Pixel watch is pretty good looking. It certainly looks high quality and built/designed well. If Apple had done a round watch, I imagine it would look like this. I'm a tall guy and it does look a little undersized on my wrist, but not so much that I am embarrassed to wear it. The included band is plastic/vinyl, which I feel is a tad too informal for the quality of the device, though alternative replacements are available for purchase. With Google's acquisition of Fitbit last year the one area it looks to eke ahead is with health monitoring. About half of the pre-installed apps, or "tiles", are Fitbit trackers. Having worn this watch in conjunction with my Galaxy watch, it puts to question how accurate these trackers are. One particular day the Pixel tracked me over 11,000 steps, but the Galaxy tracked less than 9,000. Last night's REM sleep only totalled 47 minutes according to Fitbit, but Samsung says over 2 hours. At the moment, at least for step-counting, I think the Pixel could improve. My phone also tracks steps and works with my Galaxy watch, so if I don't have one of the devices on me, they'll sync up for a more precise total. The Fitbit tracker ignores my phone's counts and only keeps a tally of the steps I take while wearing the Pixel. That being said, I do not have a Pixel phone, which probably has a few more capabilities associated with the Pixel watch. I am a bit disappointed with the battery life of the watch. It's claimed that a full charge lasts about 24 hours. This time frame is pretty accurate, if not slightly underestimated. On paper that looks like a decent amount of time, but in reality it is annoying. My other watch, which is several years old now, lasts 3 days between charging. Expect to have to charge this watch daily, even if you don't use any apps. On the plus side, it charges extremely fast. Speaking of fast, I am impressed with the time it takes the Pixel to carry out a command. For example, controlling a smart plug to turn on a lamp is frustratingly slow through my other watch. The app opens quickly enough, but the smart devices take a few seconds to connect before you can control them. The connection via Google Home with the Pixel watch is instant. Navigating Google Home takes some brain power, but that's a different review. Keep in mind that you'll need a USB-C port somewhere to charge this watch. For the quality of the watch, it being a maiden flagship device, and the price, I'm a little surprised a charging brick isn't included. I realize most devices are omitting it as well, but Google has decided to use USB-C for the charging disk. I have dozens of USB-A bricks, but none for C. I have to turn on a laptop just to charge my watch. Certainly not a deal breaker, but it would've been nice if a USB-C to USB-A adapter was included. What I like: - the face can be flipped for wearing on the right wrist - looks and feels like a high-quality product - easily paired with my non-Pixel phone - low-lag connection; texts, calls, Google Home commands - charges quickly Room for improvement: - a slightly larger option - longer battery life - charger plug or USB-c to USB-a adapter included

So far, I really like my Pixel Watch. It’s not perfect, but it’s a great addition to my wrist and to my phone. The device itself feels minimalist in its design. It’s very sleek, and the domed display really looks nice. I have a somewhat smaller wrist, I have generally worn watches that are understated, so the overall size works well for me. So does the smaller band, conveniently included in the box. Someone who has a larger wrist or prefers their watch have more of a physical presence might be a bit underwhelmed. Setup was quick and easy with my Pixel phone. It’s a bit surprising that instead of using the same Wear OS app that I was using for my last Wear OS watch, this one has its own App. Is it really that different from other Wear OS devices? Oh well, installing another app wasn’t that much of a burden, and I was up and running about ten minutes after the unboxing. I’ve used Wear OS before, but even for someone new, I would imagine that the menu system is easy to understand, and the controls are intuitive. The subtle haptic feedback is particularly helpful on such a small interface. Most times, the watch is peppy and responsive, but there have been a few moments when it felt like my taps and swipes took a moment or two to register. The microphone and speaker are good enough quality – nothing I’d want to try to enjoy music through, or even join a long conference fall from, but they’re decent enough to talk to Google Assistant and/or take a quick phone call. I’ll note that I haven’t activated the LTE function with my wireless carrier yet, so my calls were handled by my phone. In this mode, the Pixel Watch was essentially acting as a second screen and Bluetooth speakerphone. The apps and fitness tracking are similar to what I’ve used on other Wear OS watches, but this one has some unique features. First, there is Fitbit integration, so I’ve got that whole ecosystem of step and activity tracking. Second, in addition to a pulse meter, which is common on smart watches these days, the Pixel Watch can measure your heart’s electrical activity (electrocardiogram/ECG). After I launched the Fitbit ECG app and held my fingertip on the face of the side button (crown) for 30 seconds, my Pixel Watch told me that I had a normal heart rhythm, and the FitBit app provided a PDF of the ECG (in case I wanted to share with my doctor). Very cool! One of my favorite features as someone who has a Pixel phone and Pixel Watch is the Pixel Camera app. I can launch my phone’s camera, preview the camera lens view, and trigger the shutter (with a 3 sec delay) all from my watch. Very convenient for selfies and group shots! Battery life has been decent, but not amazing. I generally charge the watch for about 20-30 minutes when I’m getting ready in the morning and another 20-30 minutes again when I’m wrapping up my day and getting ready for bed. That’s been enough to keep it going most days. There were a few times when the battery started to run low, and the Battery Saver mode came in handy. Heavy users might need to charge more often or be okay with the fact that Battery Saver cuts some features to preserve charge. The Google Pixel Watch has some room for improvement, and might not be prefect for everyone, but overall, it has been working out well for me. I’ve been wearing it every day, using it to get quick updates, send quick replies to incoming messages, and track steps, sleep, and other activity. Also, I do enjoy the look of the watch on my wrist.

I've literally been waiting years for this watch and Google did not disappoint. It's super sleek, customizable from watch faces to colors to tiles and apps, and the UI is buttery smooth. If you're in the market for a smart watch with all the versatility of Google and Google Assistant, as well as how robist Fitbit's health tracking can be, i definitely would recommend this.
