I was most pleasantly surprised by the sound quality from the zoom. I've only used it with a direct hookup so I really don't know how the built in mikes perform, but so far I'm completely happy.

I highly recommend this hand-held recorder. It has great sound reproduction and is easy to use. Great for recording your own music in a digital format.

This upped my audio quality for my YouTube channel a ton. I use it with my Canon 70D and I am very impressed with the difference compared to the onboard mic.

I returned this item because I kept getting a hissing sound every time I used the auto gains. When in manual, it was fine. I ended up returning it and spending the extra money on the H2n and am loving it!!! It is a bit bulkier than the H1, but worth it.

I'm a musician and I bought this because I neede something small to hook into the line-out of my soundboard to record myself live. But it just distorts no matter how you set it. Setting the input volume your self, putting on the bass roll off nothing helps. I tried the mics and they work fine. But I already have the zoom h2 with better live mics and more mic setups. Where on this one you just have the 1 pair in the X/Y pattern and that's it. So if you need to record from 1 place with live mics this should work fine, but the line in setup is nothing but trouble

Sound volume was too low - could never turn it up very loud. I needed to transcribe some things and had to use headphones to hear them well enough. The buttons (play, rewind, etc.) are small, close together and were difficult to deal with when I was trying to start and stop often. I returned this at the store and bought a Sony ICD-PX820 instead, which was less expensive but better design and volume. The Sony also comes with a cable for the USB drive (the Zoom did not).
