Lacking
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm a moderate Metallica fan. Not a fanboy who likes whatever they put out. I can tell you compared to their 80's to early 90's stuff Hardwired is sorely lacking. Not a terrible album overall but personally I was disappointed. If your a hardcore fan you might still like it but I did not.

Slightly less of an angry saint
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. For any other band this would be a 3 - 4. If it wasn't for St. Anger being the pile of trash that it is, this would be rated a one. The 2 good Metallica songs are on YT for free, and were released as singles. Save your money.

||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I am a fan of the Metallica from the days of Master and Justice, and have not been a fan of much of what they have done since, and this has got to be the worst of it all

Hardwired... To Self-Destruct
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Well, it took 8 years, but Metallica's tenth album Hardwired... To Self-Destruct is here and what a beast it is. Say what you will about Metallica, they've still got it. This album is likely a crazy mix of their first 3 albums, the black album, and a little bit of Load & Reload thrown in for good measure. Now...to something that I'm sure the audiophiles want to know about. honestly, I had never heard of the "loudless war" until Metallica's last album Death Magnetic came out. Since then, there have many postings online stating criticisms over so-called loudness in music even though it's been going on for years, but since Death Magnetic, a lot of "know-it-alls" came out of the woodwork to state what they thought was affected by the loudness war, but Death Magnetic was definitely the worst offender. The mixing was so loud and brick-walled, you couldn't play it very loud or it would sound distorted and you risk ear fatigue. Not with Hardwired thankfully. I don't fancy myself as an audiophile, and I don't have credentials, I'm no expert. What I do know is what sounds good, and if you're worried about sound quality, don't be.

love the 80's
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Generic. Predictable. Boring. Recycled. Post 1988 Metallica. Yes, I consider Justice to be their finest work. I am still craving Justice II. While there are some good moments on Hardwired, they are few and far between. AND... a little Metallica is better than no Metallica. The album is not so bad that i would avoid it, its just all of the things I mentioned above. For some context... in the past several years I have been enjoying bands like Conquering Dystopia, (Loomis, Merrow) Lamb of God, Trivium, and other bands of similar talent and creativity. These are the musicians that took from And Justice for All and brought it to the next level. Or perhaps the next several levels, in Conq Dyst's case. Just amazing stuff! Now for the details. Moth into flame is the lone stand out on the album. Classic Metallica with tempo changes, multiple riffs, and decent leads. Beyond this song... its just not happening. Take "confusion" for example. A six minute song built around one riff. An intro that had me thinking AM I CONFUSED? Confused about the first minute of the song being Am I evil? ( the recycled) The intro is just pointless. Murder One. At first, that was my thought... They Murdered One! !! Then it just devolved into a typical low E to next octave E Mid tempo no palm needed riff. This song is a good representative of the rest of the album. Just enough to not turn it off. I should stress, its not a horrible album. I'm just hopelessly waiting for something that will probably never be. As a young guitarist, I remember desperately waiting for the tabs to come out for Justice, so that I could play along with the album. Just learning all those notes, and techniques was so informative, and satisfying. Listening to this album, there are very few riffs if any that I would bother trying to reproduce or even need the tabs for if the mood struck me. Just real generic/basic stuff. I'm pretty sure Lars recorded this album with a starter set from Toys R Us. Toms ?... Who needs toms! Its stunning to listen to how little he uses his instrument. Not sure if he has the ability or not? But some creative drumming would have definitely helped this album. Same goes for Kirk. The 2 string king. Neither of them have ever been at or near the top of their respective profession, but this album really magnifies that fact. The first time I heard the lead to the title track, I thought it was a mistake! Just weird stuff! As far as the 'Metallica engine' Hetfield goes. I guess you could say he's just getting older and maybe feels no need for any complexity in creativity? To me, complexity IS creativity . I am not looking for cheap pop like hooks that get old after 2 or 3 times through. I was struck by an interview James did on XM radio in which he stated how angry he gets when he hears the same triplet galloping riff in a lot of metal today. I do agree with him on this, in that it is an over used riff, and the foundation for way too many songs. Ironic that this album starts with that very riff? Its better than single note open E chugging at mid tempo! Its up to you guys to be creative with it, and not rely on it! Having said all this, I still LOVE Metallica, and don't second guess any of their work. This is all a subjective point of view. AND... I still wait for Justice II. Maybe Trujillo should be let loose and see what happens? 8 more years till the next one!

Metallica is back!!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Seriously heavy and a return to form for a band who has proven their worth. "Moth Into Flame" is one of their best songs of the past 20 years. Fans both hardcore and casual will love this album.
