I thought that the Google Home aspect of it was an additional feature rather than a prerequisite. Unfortunately (for me) the Google Home aspect of it was a prerequisite. If this had an auxiliary port or could be used via Bluetooth without having to bother with any additional app (i.e. Google Home App) then I may have liked it, used it and found it to be a 5-star speaker. Alas, for me, this was a glorified paperweight that got returned. When considering this review, please note that I was not interested in a “smart home” speaker, but a speaker that could be used in a home of average intelligence (no additional apps needed to use things around the home). I mistakenly figured that this speaker with higher intellect could make it in my home of average intelligence.

Posted .Thank you for your review. The Citation speakers are all based on the Google Assistant platform, and is intended to be used as a Smart-speaker. That is why the initial set-up needs to be done with Google Home.
If you do not want to make use of the Google Assistant, it is possible to turn it off afterwards. Then you can still enjoy all other features like Chromecast audio and Bluetooth.

Poor quality

I bought 4 of these when they were on sale for $100 each. I am constantly having issues with all 4 where the speaker randomly says it’s not setup, and has to be factory reset and reconnected to WiFi. One of the four makes random popping noises that sort of sound like something shorting out. Overall quality is lacking on what is suppose to be a $350 speaker. Expected so much better from Harmon kardon

Interrupts music without anything interrupting my phone. Maybe I received a bad unit as these have great reviews.

I read that you could have two connected. Well, you can but not in different rooms. You can only set these up as a left and right speaker so different sounds go to each. Perhaps a more tech person would be okay but these are kind of hard to setup for a novice. The treble and bass are also not adjustable and for me, the bass is turned up a little too much.

I've been a loyal Harmon Kardon ever since the Onyx line came out and have several of those speakers, stick with the Onyx line. Google takes forever to respond to voice commands and the sound quality is not very good.
