    I guess it's ok but...

Pros: Price Cons: Picture Quality, Viewing Angle, User Interface/Smart Options I know, everyone who ever writes a review says "I never write reviews..." but I really don't. I have to be extra motivated and I am in this case. This Hisense 55" TV was (yea, was... more on that later) my first 4k TV and I was excited to see how great it looked. And to be honest, it really did look great. I had never heard of Hisense two days before buying this TV but all the positive reviews and hype made me choose it over a Vizio and Samsung for the same price. That's where my trouble began. The blue shirts tried to talk me out of it but at the end of the day, the internet won and I had my TV. My wife was skeptical because of the lack-of-brand-name but I assured her it was at least as good as, or way better than those TVs you over pay for due to the name. So we got it set up, and from the get-go, things were looking pretty good. Watched some 4k youtube demos and were pretty well blown away. Then we tried some Netflix 4k and it was pretty good. The only REAL issue was the viewing angle which made watching TV from one of our chairs off to the side pretty bad. So my wife started asking if there were other TVs we could have had for the same-ish price. At $499, there were and close to Black Friday, there were more every day. I decided to start doing the real research I should have done before buying. I re-subscribed to consumer reports and read up on the Hisense H8 55. They basically said it was "meh". Then I looked at what they recommended in my price range. Go figure. Samsung, LG and Vizio. So at the urging of my wife, I looked into those and found a Samsung (6290) 55" and returned the Hisense for it. Best decision ever. To say the Samsung is better is the understatement of the century. It's lightyears better in every sense. The UI is SOOOOOOO much better. The picture quality is amazingly better and the viewing angle, despite being rated only slightly better than the Hisense is WAYYYYYYYY better. With the Hisense you really couldn't watch from the angle of our side chair. With the Samsung, it really doesn't lose much at all from that angle. All I can say is that IMHO, there is a reason why the big brands are where they are in the marketplace. I am not a videofile. I don't do calibrated settings, etc. I just like my TV to look good and sad to say that in a vacuum, the Hisense looked good but now comparing it to this Samsung, no way. And yes, before I returned this I searched out some recommended settings from those who care more about such things and frankly, those made the TV look worse for my taste.

Great Value, but Not Without its Flaws...

It's amazing what you get these days in terms of TV capabilities for the dollar. The Hisense brand isn't one most in the U.S. have heard of, but no doubt many have unknowingly been used their products under a different name. What's to like about this TV? Good build quality, good quality sound, attractive case and stand, beautiful picture quality, ability to show 4K HDR content, plenty of inputs. What I don't like? Screen has poor screen quality off-angle. Meaning unless you are directly in front of the screen, or a few degrees off center - the quality quickly degrades. So long as you are directly perpendicular and near center - you'll be fine. But don't expect good quality when looking at the screen from an angle. Next the remote control is sub par, it's really cheapo, minimal flexability, just a cheap remote. Finally the #1 complaint I have with the TV is the software... It must be using Hinense's own proprietary software, because it's slow and lacking in features. If this set was upgraded to an Android OS, it would be so much better. The menus stink, and lack depth, few options, navigation is poor and not intuitive, very few APPS to run - just bare bones. The TV has a YouTube app built-into it, and the remote also has a special YouTube button. Which is funny because YouTube barely runs on the TV. Even when directly connected to a 100MB Ethernet line the TV buffers and hangs while trying to watch YouTube. I don't know if it's because the processor in the TV is overwhelmed, or it's just bad software - in either case it is very sad because it pulls down an otherwise nice TV. To give you an example, I can watch a YouTube video running off an Amazon Fire Stick with excellent resolution and smooth no buffering performance. I then switch to the built-in YouTube app and launch the same video - and within moment the screen freezes and buffers. When that happens the best bet is to cancel out of YouTube and relaunch it. Because of this behavior I'd bet it's the software that is bad. They probably have a memory leak, or something is causing a bottle=neck / traffic jam condition with the CPU/GPU. To solve this limitation, buy a Fire Stick or a Google Chomecast.

Very Good TV for the Price

Overall the TV provides an exceptional image for the price. I would qualify that statement by adding that the picture quality was improved after turning off the local dimming and the “Ultra Smooth Motion” feature. Color reproduction seemed to be very good on the standard setting with only a slight red hue adjustment needed to suit my preference. Unpacking and setup was very easy. That was good because the owner’s manual provides very basic information about the TV. My one complaint about the TV is that the black plastic trim border on the top of the set does not sit flat. The trim doesn’t appear to be loose, it just does not sit perfectly flat (i.e. slight wave) across the top of the TV. This is the one item that prevents me from rating this TV as excellent.

The display resolution of the television is dependent on the source material. A 4K television will more accurately display the imperfections of standard definition material. Viewing 4K content using the pre-installed Netflix, Amazon, or YouTube applications should demonstrate the full capabilities of the television. Hisense 55"4k smart TV was looking at TV's in Nov 2017. When I made up my mind went back cyber Monday to buy it at best buy to get it. They were all gone, I could not order it. They did not know when or if they would come in. I found one in a big box store 50 miles away same price $398. Could not be live how good it is at that price. Very easy to set up. Remote has numbers a lot of them don't.. Picture is excellent.

Was looking for a 4k gaming display to go with the latest upgrades I've done to my rig. For the price this fit the bill. I'm really only using it with PC/Blu-Ray/Online at the moment. No consoles/cable/over the air TV. The apps are surprisingly impressive as well. I was kind of shocked at how many there are and the online 4k options. The upscaling isn't overly great but it could be worse. You really need to just use this for its 4k and not HD. At 4k colors/sharpness/blacks all look great. HD looks somewhat average. For 4k pc gaming this totally rocks! TV did 2 firmware upgrade made a couple of changes. For the HDMI 2.0 port make sure to go to advanced>HDMI settings and switch to enhanced to get the full 2.0 features. This allowed a variety of 60hz color schemes my gpu's(1080sli) could access. RGB/4:4:4:/4:2:0 8bit or 4:2:2 12bit. In all honesty its hard to tell the difference between them. I haven't been able to find the rumored 1080p/120hz setting but just the same since 1080p really doesn't look that great.

    Okay for the Price

The Hisense is a very inexpensive entry-level 4k TV with HDR. For the price, this TV is okay. YouTube videos in 4k look sharp and colorful. Video Games are fine, however at times some frames may be dropped. Cable channels are not so good. The upscaling is not as good as other 4k TVs, and a lot of the color and contrast controls do not improve the image quality all that much. It doesn't get bright enough for a well-lit room. Decent for movies, however in shots where the camera pans around, you get some jitter and the motion smoothing is quite bad. Another thing to consider is the lack of apps. TVs with built in Roku and Chromecast have hundreds of apps to choose from, but the Hisense has far less and most of them seem rather suspicious. If you want to use this as an Amazon Prime streaming device, it does the job fine. I recommend this product if you don't want to pay much for a 4k display. Otherwise it would be better to pay a little extra for a Vizio or TCL.

I picked up the TV yesterday at my local Best Buy. It was easy to unpack & set it up. Unfortunately the screen was damaged so I had to repack & went back to exchange. The exchange process was real quick & simple. Just had to wait till they brought out the replacement. Total time to exchange beginning to end (excluding drive time) was around 15 minutes. Set up the replacement set. Screen is great. Sound quality is real good loud & clear. I liked the remote. It is a full functioning remote with hot keys for Amazon, Netflix, Vudu & You Tube. I tested it on Amazon, Netflix & You Tube. All worked flawlessly. I read reviews regarding picture degradation when viewing from the side. I tested this out from several angels. While the colors do become a bit less vibrant they are not terrible and way better than the best picture on your grandmothers old TV. $500 for a 55 inch 4K with great picture quality AND a 4 year warranty. IMHO this can't be beat.

    Best 4k TV for $600

First off let me tell you I'm a Vizio and Samsung guy. All I've owned were vizio and Samsung brand TVs. Recently I went out on a limb and bought a $500 LG 4k with HDR. Long story short I was very disappointed and it was returned. I started to browse again and realized the Vizio and Samsung TVs I wanted were a little out of budget (the ones I wanted were between $1,000 and $1,500). After a lot of research I came across the 55" Hisense H8C. This TV blows all the others in its price range out of the water. I was very hesitant in buying a TV that wasn't a Vizio or Samsung but I'm so glad I gave this one a try. I am the pickiest person alive when it comes to quality of TV picture and this TV has not let me down! The 4k and HDR quality is great! It competes with the $1,000+ TVs, which is hard to believe, but it does! I definitely recommend this TV!!

A few people have complained about the viewing angle on this TV so I was surprised to see zero evidence of any viewing issues. The 55h8c is viewable from anywhere. My old DLP had viewing angle issues but that isn't the case here. Setup was easy. I used some online picture setup instructions but there was so much detail in the setup choices that it was confusing at first but I ended up with a great picture. I did have to change the viewing mode from Theater (which made the picture too dark in some scenes, preventing me from seeing the characters) to a lighter setting. Otherwise it has been amazing and I've been very happy with both the picture quality and the speakers. The speakers on my Samsung were weak but the Hisense has been pretty good. I plan to connect the TV to my receiver for movies and such but for just regular viewing the stock speakers are fine. I really couldn't be happier with this purchase and the price point is very impressive. Only had the TV for 2 weeks but so far it's been great.
