Total Control from Anywhere
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Honeywell Thermostat I’ve wanted to replace my thermostat in my apartment for some time; it is an old round style and is part of the reason I have trust issues as I can set the temp but the approximate readback is usually off by several degrees. So if I am going to go to all the trouble, why not go with a smart thermostat which is why I went with this particular thermostat. I have used Honeywell thermostats in the past and there are smart thermostats from other vendors but I liked the touch screen capabilities of this thermostat. Moreover, the display screen has the ability to have the background color adjusted in preset colors or in a custom color in order to help the thermostat better blend into the wall, which it does. Along the same lines, the thermostat is much smaller than it appears in pictures and one would expect, roughly the size of a wallet further helping it blend into the wall. My only critique is that the screen never fully goes dark, just dims some. I’d prefer it to go dark and awake upon touch. The thermostat has the ability to learn as well as being scheduled. Doing an initial schedule, you have 7 day flexibility as well as four events: awaking, leaving house, returning home, and bedtime. There is a bit of a wizard walk through that helps you if you have routine (work) to copy across multiple days. I personally would have like a little more flexibility in scheduling with more events during the day. It also has the capabilities to be programmed for special events where you know you will want a one-time change of schedule like a holiday party. The apps that are available regardless of your device are fairly easy to use. They are a simplistic view of the thermostat screen but do seem to limit some of the functionality relative to being in front of the thermostat. But that is ok, because what they really allow you to do is change the temperature anytime and anywhere! Forgot to turn down the heat while you go shopping for the day, just pull out your phone! Laying in bed but a bit cold, pull out your phone and just like that you are warmer and more comfortable! This is probably what I like most and use most, adjusting the temperature without having to get up. Installation and set-up are quite easy. The instructions are quite clear and require little handy-man knowledge. You will likely want a pair of pliers to aid in pushing the wires into the receptors. Mine lacked the dedicated “C” wire and so I had to do a bit more work but the instructions for this exact situation are included in the box and are very easy to follow. Once installed, the initial set-up of the thermostat is straight forward and the instructions once again take you step-by-step and is accomplished in a few minutes. The longest part of the process was setting up a free account with Honeywell to register the device as you have to wait for an email from them. Overall, a nice thermostat with great functionality that appears like it will hold up for many years to come. Pros: Easy to use Easy to Set-up Abundance of Features Can use more than one in your home Cons: Screen never goes fully dark

Easy Install. Easy to use. Needs a C wire!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.A few years ago our furnace died. When they replaced our old furnace they also replaced my bright and easy to read with one that was much more dim and mildly awkward to use. I have long regretted that I didn’t insist they leave the old thermostat. BUT, I had the opportunity to get this Honeywell Smart WiFi Thermostat and after just a couple of days I am loving it! Installation could hardly have been easier. I’m not even very handy and I had the old thermostat replaced and up and running again in barely 30 minutes. It was as simple as powering off the furnace system, taking a photo of the wiring on the old to make sure which color wires were connected to which terminals, then removing it and putting the new one on in its place making sure to match the wires to the corresponding terminals from the old one. In my case my wire colors and terminal labels matched, but that is not guaranteed to be the case so pay attention to this. The one “gotcha” on the wiring is that for this to thermostat to work it will need a constant power supply and that requires a “C” wire. My old thermostat had a powered (albeit lame) display so I knew I had the C wire, but if you aren’t sure then I recommend you check first. If you don’t have a C wire already then you can either replace the entire run (I’m not that handy) or you can use something like a Venstar Add-a-wire kit which can add a C wire without having to replace the entire run. One way or another though, you’ll need a C wire for this to work. Once installed and powered up, the thermostat walks you through some basic setup to know what kind of system it’s controlling and then, optionally, to connect to your WiFi. For WiFi, the thermostat only sees the older 2.4GHz bands. 2.4GHz WiFi is still very common but if you happen to be more “cutting edge” and have tried to migrate to the less-cluttered 5GHz WiFi band, just know that this device will be one of those 2.4GHz stragglers. It’s a small thing, but in the interest of being modern and flexible I would have expected it to be 5GHz capable. Assuming you setup the WiFi you will need to create and account and register it online. Once you do that then you can easily install the Honeywell app on Android or iOS and then you can monitor, set, and schedule it from your phone. And there’s a straightforward web interface as well if you’re on a computer. One nice thing of having it on my phone is that if I’m feeling a little chilly or hot when sleeping I can just roll over and change it from the comfort of bed -- no more awkward, dark, and sleep disturbing little trips into the hallway. Finally, it has 4 built-in schedule periods that you can customize -- Wake, Leave, Return, and Sleep -- that you can disable entirely or customize to your desires. You can schedule these periods to any time of day, all days, weekdays, weekends, or any mix thereof. It’s pretty intuitive. Our previous thermostat was programmable but it was awkward so we never fully utilized it -- no doubt we missed out on opportunities to save money. This new one is so easy to program and monitor that I’m eager to see how much we save by finally putting an automatic schedule into place.

Nice thermostat, better options available though
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I am in the beginning stages of creating a smart home environment for my house. I have several pieces to include the Chamberlain MyQ garage opener, Wemo switches and Ecobee 3 thermostat. I planned to use my 4th Gen Apple TV as the hub for it all, but not all options work with Apple. When I had the opportunity to get the Honeywell thermostat, I jumped at the chance because my wife is not really a fan of the Ecobee (she doesn't really know how to use it) My home has a tri-zone heating setup, which means that I have three separate thermostats that control each floor of my home. I currently have an Ecobee 3 Smart Thermostat installed on the main floor and two standard programmable thermostats for the other two floors. When I installed my Ecobee, I knew that eventually I would add at least one more, so I had already made it a point to identify the C wire for the other zones. The C wire is required in order for these smart thermostats to work. It allows constant power to the thermostat without a need for batteries. Installation of the Honeywell was quite simple and took less than 30 minutes. Mainly due to running up and down the stairs to turn the furnace off and install the C wire onto the motherboard of my furnace. The directions were easy to follow and even provides you with instructions on hooking it up if you do not have a C wire. Once I connected all wires and securely mounted the thermostat to the wall, I turned the power back on to the furnace and the Honeywell started right up. It asked me several questions about my HVAC setup and then prompted me to connect to my wifi. After everything was connected, I was instructed to create a profile on their website in order to remotely control the thermostat using my phone or tablet. Again, this was simple and quick. I programmed my heating/cooling schedule right from the thermostat, although you are able to do the same from the website or by downloading the app to your phone or tablet. This thermostat more closely resembles a standard thermostat, unlike my Ecobee 3 and is very simple to program and check the status of your HVAC. You can view the exterior and interior temperatures, as well as the 5 day forecast right on the display. You have the option of changing the background colors on the display to match your décor or desired color. While I like this thermostat, for the price, I would rather have another Ecobee. The Ecobee has built in motion sensors that override your scheduled settings when it notices that someone is home when the schedule is programmed for away settings. The Ecobee also has geo-fencing which is a real nice feature. The Honeywell doesn't work with Apple Homekit, but does work with Alexa and Google Assistant. The only other issue I have with this one is I wish the display would dim out after a certain period of time. This thermostat is installed in my bedroom and there is a constant light emitting from it. This is admittedly a personal preference, but one I felt should be mentioned. Overall, I would recommend this thermostat, but if you want something in the same price range with more advanced features, I would look at the Ecobee or Nest.

Better than the Nest for simple control
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This thermostat took a minute to get wired up for me, since all the newer thermostats require a "parasitic" 24v connection to either a new power source or directly to your furnace control board. Once I got that in place I was up and running. I found that I wasn't able to do anything with the thermostat until it was connected to power and I couldn't set up my account ahead of time with the thermostat offline. Getting connected to wifi is a simple task, even if entering a password is somewhat tedious on the touchscreen, which is obviously made to an ideal size to control the termostat and NOT to be used as a tablet. Having replaced an older 7 day programmable thermostat the operation was simple and familiar to set a program and let it run. It was the connection to my account and then eventual connection to Google Assistant that I was looking for. This took a few tries to get both linked, but once I did I had control over my home's temperature from Google Home (super cool) and then I could use the Honeywell Total Home Connect App outside of the home to control the temp when I was away. I dislike that this thermostat goes completely offline when the power goes out, but it does revert to it's previous state (heating or cooling) and is able to reconnect to the internet after a power loss, unlike early versions of the Nest. Overall this is a somewhat simplified connected thermostat that works well, without any of the advanced modes like learning your schedule, but did provide me with off-site control and worked well.

Easy to use smart thermostat
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Works well with my 2002 HVAC system. Only difference this thermostat requires a previously unused C Wire, which powers the Honeywell. I like how you can incorporate this thermostat into your existing Google home atmosphere easily. It's so nice to adjust the room temperature without having to get up. This is much smaller than my older programmable thermostat this replaced, and the color display looks nice. This also will show you the weekly forecast weather and temps. You can also control this via the Honeywell app if you don't have Google assistant or Amazon Alexa. I've now been using this for 3 years without any issues or problems, while the cost is still on the high side for this thermostat. I do prefer it over other brands offering smart thermostat options on the market. The only issue you may have when installing this onto a older system is if your HVAC doesn't have a C wire. Which can easily be remedied by simply running one inside your wall. I would highly recommend this to anyone wanting a smart thermostat.

great thermostat
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This thermostat is wonderful. Set up was a breeze. Caution - make sure you have a C wire - or are more electrically advanced than me. There are tons of videos from Honeywell to help you with installation if you have any doubts. It was super easy to install and program. The app is great, works like a charm. The display is really nice and easy to use. I would recommend this to anyone who is into gadgets and likes the idea of being able to remotely control their thermostat. So cool! No cons to speak of, so far it's a great gadget to keep my home warm.

Easy install, easy interface
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Honeywell Smart Color Thermostat with Wi-Fi was a nice upgrade from my 20 yr old programmable thermostat (the kind with the liquid crystal display that lets you set weekday and weekend schedules). I have only 2 "cons" with this device. The first is with the person who installed my previous thermostat wire--so that is not Honeywell's fault. I only had a 4-wire thermostat wire. I was prepared to replace it with 5-wire as the existing wire is exposed through my basement all the way up until the last 4' before the thermostat where it is in the wall and apparently stapled to a stud a million times. Fortunately Honeywell has VERY GOOD instructions with online videos telling you how to make a 4-wire thermostat wire work with this device. Installation was easy. ADVICE: PULL YOUR OLD THERMOSTAT OFF THE WALL FIRST AND SEE WHAT KIND OF WIRING YOU HAVE BEFORE PURCHASING. ALSO, CHECK YOUR SYSTEM TO MAKE SURE IT IS COMPATIBLE. Use this link to guide you: https://yourhome.honeywell.com/en/general-pages/wi-fi-programmable-thermostat-home-compatibility As for the con Honeywell could have addressed: No backup battery. I suppose since all the programming is controlled via the web, power loss won't affect the controls. (I tested this by killing power to the furnace. When power was restored, the thermostat rebooted with all the settings I expected.) However, when the power is out you won't know the temperature of your home. The display goes dark. Daily program options break down to 4 different times of day: WAKE, LEAVE, RETURN, SLEEP. You can customize each day of the week either via the thermostat, the web interface, or a phone app. Setting up those schedules is very easy. Times are broken into 15 minute increments. The thermostat has the typical TEMP HOLD options (until "next program" kicks in or "indefinitely") and a VACATION option. All of these can be done at the thermostat or via app. You can pick from a number of color screens to help match your display to your wall color if you want. You can also adjust the brightness of the screen. All-in-all I am very pleased with this unit. It will be nice to be able to adjust temps at home whenever we are away from the house for extended periods of time. It would be super cool if the thermostat could automatically detect when someone is in the house (or on the way home) but until that day comes, Honeywell gives you all the necessary controls at your fingertips to monitor and schedule your heating/cooling remotely by phone or computer.

Great but...
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a nice unit, I have used two for 6 years (Aug 2018). My only complaint would be the 2am color reversal to keep the screen from burning. My solve is to hang a black golf hat over the termostat in my bedroom. Otherwise, the functionality, internet connectivity and application interaction work great. Alexa can control changing the temperature for either floor of my house. Yes, you need the c-wire. Most modern HVAC systems have them.

Nice but incompatible. C wire issue
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.First off the screens and menu system is great. Easy to programme and operate. But, you need that C wire or it will not power up. Looked at ways to jump or provide aux power to it but it only worked on the work bench with a common 24 VAC power source, exactly as explained in the directions. I can NOT pull a wire through even though I have a terminal on the furnace. (no a.c. as that is mini split, separate from the furnace.) We wanted to make sure the thermostat was function properly, which it does and very well. But, you must have the C wire to power it. If you have W and R only, you can not use this unit. We tried several configurations to make sure it was getting power and it did not power up with out that source, which you will not have with the two wire heat only. The only disappointment is that the unit, like most, does not have an anticipator adjustment. If you remember the old "The Round" mercury switch units which functions best at .2 to .4. The higher the number, the longer the cycle time. Plus the nature of the unit dial makes it widely variable. Just because the unit is electronic doesn't mean there shouldn't be a "fine tune" mode for cycle time and temperature swing but really, that's nit picking. The unit works well in our lab but then there's that pesky C wire. Bottom line: Yes, recommended, contingent to long life operation and accuracy. Two things we couldn't test for. Life is subjective, accuracy was not measured in the lab so we can not say one way or the other. What we can say is that we love the different colours and touch screen.

Great Thermostat, Simple Setup
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is my first smart thermostat and I am very pleased with it. Despite the many available settings, set up is very simple and clear. You can set your schedule to be as complicated or simple as you want with the ability to set individual days and times for each day. Or you can set all the days at once. The thermostat includes the ability to change the background color to match your wall, which I thought was a nice touch. There are several preset colors or you can create a custom color. One minor annoyance about the display is that there is an icon directly behind the main temp display that I find distracting. Initial setup was easy and the directions are clear and concise. Upon first power up the thermostat walked through setting up the wifi connection and some initial settings like time/date etc. The hardest part was connecting the thermostat to the furnace. In my case I had to run a new 18-5 wire from the thermostat to the furnace. But again, the directions are clear and easy to follow for any type of furnace. Anyone with basic handyman skills will be able to install the thermostat on a furnace that supports it. Overall I am extremely satisfied with this thermostat.

Better than the Lyric's before it
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This thermostat is pretty well featured. It allows you to customize the backgrounds, set up schedules, and even control it with your Amazon Echo. The only issue I seem to keep having, is that the Network Connection seems to drop randomly. The previous Lyric's I had installed did the same thing, and this one is no different. I'm running an eero Mesh network, and this is the only device that constantly drops offline. Aside from that, the installation is pretty straight forward. I'd recommend taking a picture of the current wiring of your thermostat, make sure you have a common wire. You'll simply remove the old thermostat, and install this new one. The setup was easy and I was able to get Alexa controlling it in a few minutes once it came online. This is a great thermostat for those who want an easy to control thermostat that understands your schedule. However, the features of the Nest are a bit more refined, and I ended up uninstalling this one after the frustration of the offline issues after a few days. I ended up installing it at my parents house. They use a standard modem router combo, which is nearby, and they haven't experienced the same network issues I did. Your results may vary.

Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Easy to install and user friendly. Only issue I’m having is that indoor temp is off by 3 degrees. Not the Smartest of Smart Thermostats
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.+Good design +Mostly easy to use and intuitive interface +Modest improvement in my heating bill -Terrible app design -Screen is always lit up After running a 5-wire thermostat wire and using this thermostat for a couple of months, compared to my old, "dumb" programmable thermostat, I've noticed some modestly appreciable savings in my electric/heating bill. While the interface is mostly easy to use and intuitive, I don't think this thermostat lives in the same category as some of the main competition. One thing to note up front is that this thermostat requires a C wire to operate. While you can jump a couple wire terminals to get this to work with a 4 wire setup, you lose ability to run your fan without having the AC/heat going. It's nice that they give this option (along with directions on how to do it and even a jumper wire), I opted to run a 5 wire line to replace my older 4 wire. First, the positive. As mentioned, the interface is mostly easy to use. The main screen presents all the main information in a well laid out manner, and having the outdoor weather presented on the screen is a huge plus. Setting up a schedule is easy, and while switching the temp is a two step process, that too is easily done. Not only is the interface good, the unit itself has a great aesthetic to it. Finally, the unit seems to have helped in lowering my heating bill, even if only by a little. Comparing December of this year to last, the amount of "therms" consumed at my house dropped from 111 to 104 (both months had an average temperature of 28 degrees, so usage should be directly comparable). While that's not a giant savings, every little bit helps. Now, the not so good. The app, quite frankly, is down right hideous. The aesthetic, at least on Android, looks like it was designed 10 years ago. All the functionality I want is there, which is great, but the look kills it for me. Another complaint about the unit is that the display stays lit all the time. As far as I could tell, there's no way to change this. Finally, while Honeywell lists this as a "learning" thermostat, I found that it's completely reliant on how you setup your schedule. Changing temperatures outside said schedule doesn't seem to have a broader impact on operation. This is in contrast to a Nest, for instance, which adapts its schedule based on how you tweak the temperature over time. Overall, this is a decent thermostat, but for the price, I'd probably look elsewhere for one with more "smarts."
