I have hardwood, carpet and area rugs and it requires a manual change at the base of the vacuum to switch heights. In order to use the hose and handles you have to unlock the hose from the body of the vacuum and then turn a switch to move the suction from the bottom to the hose. This device could have been a much simpler design.

This vacuum comes with a carpet height adjustment feature which allows you to clean a variety of surfaces ranging from high carpet to hard floor. If the vacuum is feeling difficult to push, try turning the knob to the next highest setting. Thanks, Hayley - Hoover Team

When started it started it created vdust @ lint similar to laundry drier. Waiting to call the Hoover phone before returning the products to Best Buy.
