Good for the basics, technical issues may vary.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is very much meant to be a more budget-friendly laptop, meant for those who need the very basics without too much else. You won't be able to store much on here, so you will likely want to keep this as a simple work device when away from home. You could probably stretch this out further by uninstalling some of the apps it comes with, but even the essentials are going to take up most of your hard drive. Be wary that you may have issues just starting up the laptop for the first time. When I got to the Windows Update screen, the whole process got stuck and forced me to hard-reboot the laptop, which ended up restarting the set-up altogether. It eventually did go through, but it's a very glaring mark on this laptop. Another piece of advice is to turn off the "S mode", which forces you to use Microsoft's own store for all of your app downloads. I'm sure most people use a variety of programs, so you don't need your own computer telling you what you can and can't use. I've gone over the negatives I've found, but there are some positives. The laptop itself feels sturdy despite being lightweight, and the keyboard is large enough to feel comfortable typing on (in fact, I'm using it to write this review). Sounds and video have played well enough from my experience, and at the very least it can handle some light streaming. Battery life seems adequate, and will likely vary depending on what you're doing at the time, but if you're just checking emails you could probably keep this unplugged all day with no worries. As I said before, this is very much designed to be your standard work machine without the bells and whistles. You won't be doing much if any gaming on it, and it's best saved as an emergency machine or for something to bring on trips if you need something for work or with a keyboard. I would advise testing one out in-store before deciding if this is for you.

Underrated, Sleek 2023 Designed Windows 11 Laptop
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. To whomever is viewing this review, PLEASE do not get scared about the individuals saying this laptop is a slow, undesirable device. Simply, most of them have not or do not know how to rid the device of the pre-loaded bloatware which comes with it (standard practice for Windows machines). I am a guy who came from a $1400 M2 MacBook air which I thought for the money was just ok and opted for this device instead. Let me TELL YOU, once you open the box, turn the power on and allow the pc to download all necessary updates (took me about 2 hours for me to just sit and wait painfully).. This device is then ready to be utilized in FULL Windows 11 mode (not 'S' mode which is by default for this machine), de-bloated and de-animated (maximum performance) before full functionality that most of these reviewers are not receiving simply because they have not taken the time or do not know how to perform these steps. First to get out of the Windows 'S' mode, I recommend looking to the internet. Once out of 'S' mode, turn to the web browser (default Edge) and search for 'CC Cleaner'. This free program once installed on the machine will allow you to rid of all the bloatware programs (common Windows practice) that were installed on the device. Once the programs are all ridded of the bloatware, turn to the internet and see all the advanced Windows settings in regards to turning off unnecessary animations, game mode (not needed especially for this machine) and adjustments to the minimum processor speed for both battery and plug in. Once you turn off/tweak these critical settings, the device PERFORMS. In conclusion, this HP 14" is a wonderfully designed, steal of a product once ridded of all the unnecessary junk and tweaked to a stress free experience.

Good Value!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Summary ------- This is a good laptop for my son to work on the school assignments while at home. The 64GB is sufficient as he does not store files locally and works mostly off his google classroom. 8GB RAM is sufficient to make sure the laptop is zippy for the day to day needs. For the price its a great purchase with a fantastic display Pros ---- 1. Price, very inexpensive 2. Backlit Keyboard 3. HD display with microedge 4. lightweight at 3.2 lbs Cons ---- 1. Very basic - mostly surf the web or kids school needs Details ------- This is a very basic laptop which will serve the purpose of kids using it with school work and that's what my son got it for. The display is pretty good with HD (1366 x 768) and microedge. The operating system is windows 11 home edition. The laptop itself looks to be well made with quality plastic and its light weight with just 3.2lba The battery life seems to be decent and it has the HP fast charge capability with 0 to 50% in 45 minutes which i think is pretty decent The laptop also includes a 720p camera for zoom calls for school Overall for the price, i would buy it in a heartbeat.

I never thought I'd recommend a Chromebook...
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Well, if you're looking at this computer, I'm guessing it's between this and a Chromebook. I never thought that I'd actually recommend a Chromebook (they've always struck me as "baby's first computer"), but I think that I have to... This machine is running Windows S. I figured, great! You can run some real applications on here. Not really. The "S" means that it's kept in the Windows sandbox and doesn't play with other programs. You're restricted to the app store just like a Chromebook, only Window's store isn't as extensive. Now that you can use Word, Excel, etc. through the Google store, you might as well get a Chromebook for school. This machine has similar specs to a Chromebook, so it should be similar, right? Nope. The specs of a decent Chromebook make for a laggy experience with a machine running even a limited version of Windows. But you can at least have a decent experience with web-browsing and some simple videos, right? Nope. The lag gets you again. I tried watching 480p videos on YouTube and you get sputters every minute or so, even with nothing else at all running in the background. Every aspect of this is a profoundly cheap machine. The screen isn't great, the audio isn't great, the keyboard feels cheap and flexes really easily. The design of the machine even makes it look like the keyboard is permanently flexed and I needed to use a ruler to see that it's actually flat. The plastic case feels cheap... Just get a Chromebook. Even a low-end one...

Perfect for students and casual users
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. With just 4GB of RAM, this won't set any land speed records, but for casual use and school work, it is more than adequate. It's lightweight enough that it doesn't weigh down a backpack and feels well-made so I'm not worried about taking it on trips. The hinge is firm but I am still able open with one hand. Navigating online was quick with pages loading quickly. Videos played without any trouble and the screen was adequate. I did some work with Excel and Power BI and it's fine for creating smaller spreadsheets, but downloading and navigating through larger data sets definitely put the computer under some stress. Creating and viewing Powerpoint and Word documents was problem-free. I was able to do some light photo editing on Photoshop Express, but large files or heavy edits slowed the machine down. Any of the full-featured pvideoor video editors aren't going to run on this barebones on a system. For most students and casual users, this laptop is a perfect solution without sinking a lot of money into a system with more power than they need.

A Very Budget Laptop
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I knew what I was getting when I bought this laptop considering the price. A couple of things I've noticed / done to make it a travel laptop that I won't worry about if it gets stolen / lost: * Format the HD with Debian/Ubuntu as you soon as you buy it. I can't imagine using Windows on it considering the processor speed and memory * I had to disable the trackpad and use a USB mouse. It seems that it's easy for the trackpad to stay pressed continually, at least on mine, making the computer unusable. * Power / Suspend doesn't seem to work on mine. I had to disable suspend, so, when I close my laptop, it doesn't go into suspend mode. Not sure if it is a HW issue or SW, but, couldn't fix it. I'm willing to accept these flaws considering why I bought the machine.

Why does this exist?
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have been asking myself why this laptop exists, and I have yet to find an answer. Who is the target audience? The price point may be attractive, but that should be a warning sign in this case. HP tends to make products that are generally reliable, well-made, and of decent to excellent quality. Boy did they miss the mark with this one! Let's start with the overall build quality. The shell is plastic, which is to be expected with budget laptops. There is some weight which provides a false sense of "quality". Just because something is heavy, does not mean it is well-made. Opening the lid, the hinge actually functions quite well. It holds its position and is taught. I noticed right away there is a plastic bezel around the screen that seems to be glued in place, and not well I might add. It was already separating from the screen to the degree I could see the gap. The keyboard is atrocious. The keys are not at all pleasant to type on, and even light typing causes the casing to push downward. There is a TON of give all around the inside of this laptop due to the very thin plastic. There is no backlighting, which is not uncommon in this price point. The 14" 1366x768 HD display is usable, but really low image quality. Don't expect clean, crisp images or to effectively perform any image editing. The colors seem muted and dull, the image edges are not well defined. I also worry about the screen being damaged due to the exterior lid having a lot of give. The ports are another area where it would be easy to be fooled into thinking this is a much better laptop than what it actually is. There is a single HDMI, 2 USB Type A, a single USB-C, a headphone jack, and SD card reader. The USB ports are all 3.0 so the speed is limited. The internals are where I am baffled, and what makes me wonder why this exists. The hard drive is a laughable 64GB. This is not much space, so if you are looking to add additional programs, or store photos and videos, you'll find yourself running out of storage very quickly. 4GB of RAM in a laptop is just silly. What are you going to do with this? Nothing! Multitasking is not a thing with that amount of RAM. If you keep a lot of browser tabs open or tend to minimize instead of close programs, you will bring this laptop to its feet. The N4500 Intel Celeron processor isn't going to allow for much speed or bandwidth to do much on this device anyway. I understand this is a budget laptop, but these specs are just horrible. When I started this laptop for the first time the boot time was just under a minute, which is slow. As with most new computers, there was an update available for the Windows OS. Over high-speed wireless broadband the download took just shy of 20 minutes. Ok, I'll extend some grace. There are multiple variables that could impact a download. However, the update failed to install, even with multiple attempts. I made another attempt to redownload the update, but again the update failed to install. In the end, for me, it doesn't really matter. This is not a device I will be using. So, I'm left wondering still - why make this and who is the target audience? For not much more money you can find a much better laptop with a bigger hard drive, upgraded processor, and more RAM. For the same money, a Chromebook with more impressive specs can be had. I cannot think of any demographic where I would be comfortable recommending this device.

Save your money for a capable laptop
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I wanted to run this laptop through its paces before I sat down to review it. I even let my mom test it out for a couple days. That said, this laptop “may” be good for senior citizens for some general web browsing but I would not wish this unit on students though. 4gb of RAM on a Windows PC is crawling. Using this laptop with this configuration really limits you to Chromebook functionality, and aside from web browsing and Word processing, your utility will be very limited. The display on this laptop is dull and very difficult to read. This is not a Chromebook and therefore should not act like a Chromebook. This is a Windows PC and you should be able to expect higher productivity. The build quality is flimsy and just a step above cardboard. The keyboard flexes when you type on it, the mouse pad is mechanical, and you feel it through every interaction. I would say that the price is its saving grace, but you can get a very functional and capable Chromebook that can do more than this Windows PC can.

Stay away!!!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Do NOT BUY this laptop! The processor is known to be terrible and I should’ve done my research deeper before buying. It wouldn’t even hold two tabs open at a time response/lag time was over 45 seconds. It let me start it up and get it registered just fine but after that it kept crashing. Took it back the next day and the associate said “If I would’ve seen you here yesterday I would’ve warned you. They literally all get returned within a week or so” had to exchange for a better laptop, definitely go with at least the i3 processors never ever get a Celeron
