    Outperforms Its Modest Price

HP aimed for the middle with this laptop: its 14 inch screen is mid-size, the 128gb SSD is mid-size among solid state drives, and its Intel i3 processor is mid-performance in the Intel lineup. The results are terrific. The solid state drive enables it to boot up rapidly. I can read my email 30 seconds after hitting the power button. Daily tasks, such as checking my email and calendar, drafting and editing a document, or reading news headlines are carried out smoothly. The keyboard has a firm, crisp feel. The screen is a good size for office tasks, such as editing documents, Netflix movies look good (only good...not great) with colors that are a bit subdued. The sound from the two top mounted speakers can get very loud and the HP audio app lets you add bass or boost the clarity of dialogue in movies. It is the best sound I've heard from a laptop. It is compact and very light weight, making it easy to carry with you. It can be upgraded with up to 16gb of high speed memory if you want to use it for challenging work such as Photoshop. The built-in graphics chip is NOT adequate for high demand gaming. No laptop in this price range is useful for high speed gaming. If you want a mid-size, mid-price laptop that will carry out your routine work quickly and smoothly, this is a superb choice. It costs only about $100 more than the cheapest 14 inch laptops, yet its performance is FAR superior.

WINDOWS 10 S MODE IS KEY FEATURE OF HP 14 LAPTOP

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The HP 14 laptop starts up quickly and runs smoothly in its default Windows 10 S mode. In S mode, it may be the best laptop in its price range. But, if you turn off S mode you might soon have serious problems with your laptop. Many of the negative reviews for the HP 14 laptop center on frustrations with the fact that the laptop comes with Windows 10 S mode enabled. The S mode is designed by Microsoft to keep your laptop secure from malware and virus infections by limiting you to installing software from ONLY the Microsoft app store. That means you can not even install the free anti-virus program that Best Buy provides with this laptop. Microsoft installs its own software to protect against malware and virus problems and blocks you from installing any third party virus protection that is NOT vetted by the Microsoft app store. I tried using the HP 14 for a week in S mode, and I enjoyed how quickly it started up and how smoothly programs ran. But, I was unable to connect it on my home network with a six year old Canon printer, and I was unable to install my favorite LibreOffice software. So, I took a minute to turn S mode OFF. As soon as S mode was turned off, HP began sending software update after update, including a new BIOS. A week later, HP tried to install a second BIOS and the laptop failed to restart. The update killed my laptop. So, with Windows 10 S mode turned ON, the laptop ran great. Within a week of turning S mode OFF, a defective update from HP killed my laptop. Lesson learned: Windows 10 S mode is a very effective way to protect your computer against defective software. I exchanged the now defunct HP 14 for another HP 14 which I left in Windows 10 mode. When I tried to connect to the Canon printer, there was a ten minute delay while the Microsoft store looked for reliable software. After that delay, the correct Canon software was installed from the Microsoft store and the printer is working perfectly. I now trust the Microsoft store to install the correct software, and I understand that installation process may take a looong time. BOTTOM LINE: Although many of the negative reviews of this laptop express a dislike of it being delivered in Windows 10 S mode, I suggest you give S mode a try. Use it for a month. You will find that the laptop works very well and you are well protected against malware and defective software.

Works great for school and play. Bought it for my daughter who is over 1000 miles away. I bought it at my local store and she was able to pick it up at her store. Easiest purchase I have made.

After purchasing 2 other laptops before this, I decided to keep this one. The bootup on this laptop is very quick (less than 20 seconds). The applications load and work very quickly. The display resolution is very clear and attractive when working online or watching videos. The 14" screen is very easy to carry in a business bag. I love this laptop. Only drawback is the small storage, 128 Gb. But it can be addressed with using a bigger external storage. For $319, it's a very good value. On a budget, buy this laptop. You'll be happy.

Great computer at a great price

I was searching for a computer with DDR4 memory that could be upgraded, an i3 7th gen processor, solid state drive, and around 3 pounds at a good price. I was looking at the chromebooks, but was not impressed with the flash hard drive and DDR3 memory. I was able to purchase the computer, wipe the hard drive to get rid of Windows 10 in Spy Mode, then install Ubuntu in a little less than an hour. I recently added another 8 GB of memory to the unit, removing the case was extremely easy and there are two open bays for memory. This will be my travelling computer that I will be doing my web development on and some light software engineering. Dual band wireless would be a nice feature, but the single band works alright in Windows 10. The realtek cards do seem to have issues in Ubuntu, but there are several work-around options out there. I did extensive research and for a budget conscious laptop with upgrade-ability, this is a heck of a good deal. If all you want to do is surf the web or do simple web development, this is a great computer.

    Much better than I expected

    Posted .

I got this on sale today (around $350) and I've been pleasantly surprised with it. It's thicker than I expected, but much lighter as well. It certainly has that "cheap" low end plastic laptop design, but there are things that help raise it above others like the slim bezels on the side of the display and a keyboard and trackpad combo that work quite well. After removing programs I didn't need I had almost 100 GB of storage available. The display, while having the standard low end resolution commonly found in cheaper laptops, didn't look as bad as I expected and didn't have too bad of a washed out feel you usually see. I've been surprised with how nicely the machine runs given the specs it has, but that's most likely due to running Windows 10 S. I have no need for full Windows on this device and have been able to get by with Edge and apps from the Windows Store, but I'd still recommend a PC with 8 GB of RAM if you want to multitask and use full Windows. 4 GB is cutting it close. The only time I noticed any terrible slowdown/lag was when playing videos and attempting to type documents. If you're expecting to watch Netflix or YouTube while doing other things, you'll be pushing this machine to its limits. This just isn't a good multitasking machine, but if you need something for basic everyday general use, then it's not too bad for the $350 sale price as long as you aren't expecting much. I am, however, returning the laptop since I also purchased the HP 14 Chromebook (on sale for $450) that will do the exact same things I purchased this laptop for. I figured I could save $100 and possibly get by using this PC, but the extra $100 for the Chromebook gets me a MUCH faster machine with a backlit keyboard, 1080p display, two USB-C ports, and an overall more premium device. I feel the extra $100 is worth it if you compare ChromeOS to Windows 10 S since I don't recommend this machine use full Windows Home.

I love this laptop for the price. Great value! I didn't like the windows in S mode. You can turn that off in settings, which then allows you to download other applications from the internet, i.e. Chrome browser. My old laptop died and I went out and got this I'm really happy with my purchase and would definitely recommend this for basic tasks.

I needed to get a new laptop so I can write stories and do research. This laptop is awesome. It is fast and works really great for what I need it for. I love this laptop. The keyboard is really quiet which is good cause I type a lot and don't like disturbing people that are around. I recommend this laptop.

I bought this because my 2013 Samsung was wearing out and getting slow. My 2013 Samsung is much faster than the HP. I can't open google chrome without it going opaque and giving me a not responding message. Waterfox browser is a little better but when I try to access my google drive I can't see the files and can't upload anything. I'll be bringing this thing in for Geek Squad to look at. I expect loaner while it is out and I expect to pick up a working computer when they call me to come get it. Otherwise neither best buy nor hp will ever get any of my business again.

This thing stopped working after 9 months. HP is not standing by their warranty claiming it must have been damaged by me, which would be tough since it hasn’t left the desk since I bought it. Pick another brand since they use the same components and the name on the cover is now meaningless.
