Decent laptop
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Purchased this laptop for my mother, who needed to replace her 4 year old laptop. She is a basic user: online bill pay, shopping, and emails. I would recommend this laptop for a minimal user. I do agree with the other two reviewers, this laptop is a bit on the slow side.

Great for what I use it for
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you are looking for the best gaming system this is not for you but for the most of us over 40 this is great for researching the web, youtube. facebooke and organizing pictures and some gaming this system is great. The only thing I had a problem with was it was not up to date. I talked to HP because I had set it up wrong they helped me reset the total computer to factory settings and then stayed on with me while we got everything ready to update which took several hours. They waited until all had started and what to expect then got my phone number and called me back several hours later to make sure it was done like it should be. The customer support was great and they gave me a great deal on a years worth of unlimited customer service which if I had known more about laptops I might not have bought but with my knowledge of computers it was worth the extra to make sure if I had a problem they would be there. So if you want a good computer for just simple things you can't go wrong with this one.

Win-10 dog slow, but works great w/Linux!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought this for my mum who's 7yr old Compaq lappy dust died, and she wanted a new lappy NOW - Today! I had hoped to take her old hard drive and put it into this box, but NO, you CAN'T remove the HD w/o taking entire machine apart w/a special tool. I fired it up just to see the Windows 10, which booted up dog slow. I then checked if I could repartition and install Linux in dual-boot mode, nope, Windows took up all FOUR primary partitions. So I decided to just blow away Windows, turn off Secure Boot, and install Linux from a live-CD, and copy over her HOME directory. She is not computer-savvy & only uses 4 apps: email (Thunderbird), web browser (Firefox), Solitaire (aisleriot) and multimedia (Fauxdacious). Therefore, I had to remove stuff and reconfigure and test things to make sure it looked & worked just like before, but faster! :D I only ran into 2 issues with this box: 1) The WIFI card (realtek-d723) is NOT supported OOB (as of kernel 4.20), but requires an out-of-tree driver (https://ibcomputing.com/install-rtl8723de-realtek-d723-ubuntu-18-04/), which I installed and WIFI works great now. 2) For whatever reason I can not get hibernate to work on this box (4 gig ram, 8 gig swap partition, screan goes off but machine does not turn off), though I tried everything in my bag of tricks & then some. Suspend works fine. Otherwise, this machine works perfectly for her needs. It is fast and runs cool and quiet! In summary, it's just like her setup: Bare-bones laptop with everything I need and nothing else. It's also a "dark" laptop - almost NO lights or leds except for capslock. (I would've bought her a corp. reburb (Elitebook) a cpl generations back for a/b the same money (like MY own box), but she did not want to wait, but to go to Best Buy down the street and get her a new one now, so for $299 for a brand new one, it's not too shabby, but it is what it is. But is IS a pretty sweet, fast little box for running Linux! Pros: + No-frills, but fast, quiet and cool. + Fully supports Linux (except Hibernate & wifi needs a manually-compiled driver - rtl8723de). + Plenty of ram and storage. + USB-3 & SD card reader. + built-in DVD/CD player. + built-in ethernet port. + Good bright and sharp display (1366x768) and fast graphics. Cons: - NOT a DYI box - no easy way to access swappable comonents,ie. hard drive, memory, etc. without special tools or paying the Geek Squad. - Hibernation does not work (Suspend does). - Must manually build and install WIFI driver (realtec d723 - rtl8723de) - almost no lights or indicators (ie. WIFI on or off).

Good PC
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This PC is good for streaming YouTube (1080p60 w/ h264ify), Netflix, Hulu, etc. I do sometimes play Minecraft on it, I had to turn down the settings on it to make it work better. Minecraft does freeze on it sometimes because it is not particularly a gaming PC. Video editing is fine on it (VSDC Free Video Editor). I got this PC to upgrade my problematic HP Stream (11-y10wm). If you want to get more out of it, I'd recommend upgrading it to 8GB of RAM and upgrade it to an SSD.

Not for me and BB's return policy is atrocious
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a very basic laptop. HP puts out a fine product, but it is what it is. Not for gaming, watching tv on the laptop, viewing videos, or trying to watch a replay of a game on watchespn. The RAM just fills up too fast and is not up to the task. I received this laptop as a gift for Christmas and was delighted to get it at the time. I was busy traveling at the time I received it and then got busy with work and family issues, so other than turning it on to make sure it worked out of the box, I did not touch the thing for 3 weeks (my bad given BestBuy's return policies, which I did not bother to check), as my old laptop was still my primary and I wanted the time to set this one up to match my older one as much as I could. When I finally found the time and began a full file, app, and program transfer, I just let the transfer take place and let it go. Once this was complete, I finally began to explore my new laptop and realized that this machine was not up to the standards on my older laptop with 16 GB RAM. Now, I knew that I needed to return this one and upgrade to a better laptop with better capabilities. I removed all of my files, apps, and the programs I installed (a 24 hour process) to a removable hard drive. Then I took this basically brand new laptop with very minimal personal info back to BestBuy. Surely 30 days from receipt of this gift is plenty of time for a return (not for cash, but just for store credit so I could upgrade to another HP laptop that met my needs). My bad! BestBuy cuts off returns for Christmas gifts at 1/12, as I was told by two customer service personnel and one team leader. Even though I wanted to spend more money with them to upgrade this laptop, they could do nothing for me. As I informed the team leader on my departure, I have spent a good bit of money with BestBuy in the past (my older laptop, one desktop, several external hard drives for personal and business use, 2 printers, several odd and ends including dvds and games, 3 tvs, and recently one dryer; however, I will never shop at a BestBuy again. There are plenty of other stores that carry what they carry, and, hopefully, I will get better customer service and a willingness to help at these other stores. BestBuy is not in the business to help or to maintain good customer service.

Fine For Why I Bought It
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have a gaming desktop and this laptop was purchased for a cheap computer to travel with and will mostly be used for web surfing. After getting the computer set up I uninstalled every program I didn't want, disabled what I didn't want to run on startup, and set the power setting to highest performance. Knowing I got this on sale and it was very inexpensive it performs just fine for how I am using it. I feel it is a great value for the money.

Big Hard Drive w/ decent graphics
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was fortunate enough to purchase this last week when Best buy had it on sale , even not on sale its a good machine. I was edging to a Chromebook but very glad i got a real machine. The only thing is you got to remove as much of the bloatware ' programs your not gonna run or need ' and now its almost as fast as my desktop . all in all for a budget laptop it exceeds the average and i like the form and screen very much.

Do not waste your money
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.People are not kidding when they say that this is a bad laptop. I made an account just so that I could warn people away from this product. Now I wasn't looking for THE laptop, I just wanted one that worked. Mostly writing, a little flash gaming and videos is all I really wanted this for, nothing intense. This laptop can't even handle it's own existence, let alone actually doing anything. Just sitting fresh out of the box and the processing power was already maxed out and all I've done is general set up. Tried to go to YouTube and it about had a meltdown. My old Acer 1 functions better than this thing, and faster too. Not to mention the battery went from 100% to 86% just from me trying to download Firefox and go onto YouTube. I left it plugged in while it was setting up, so no the drain did not come from that. Honestly just stay away from this laptop. Save your money and put it towards a better device.

waste of money
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I HATE this laptop. I was in a desperate situation, with not a lot of money to spend, so I ignored the negative reviews and got this cheap laptop. I got what I paid for: an almost useless machine. I've had it for about 8 months and it's only gotten worse. Its not just slow, its glacially slow. It hangs every single session. Often, I can have the computer up and running for 4 hours, but only able to work around 30 total minutes. If a site has a lot of media, forget about it. It will take ages for media to load, if at all. I can't tell you how many times this horrid machine has just stopped working, and the only way to resolve it is to Task Manager out to a Log Out option. I basically can't use it for anything. I regret every cent I spent. Since I am not tech savvy, I'm going to throw more money at the problem by taking it to a local computer shop to see what they can do to improve the performance. The one star is because it actually turns on and boots into Windows. Everything else sucks. DO NOT BUY THIS LAPTOP.

It’s simple, good for the basics.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you’re wanting something to get things done and don’t care about being 1990’s slow then this is your gal. You get what you pay for when it comes to speed (don’t shut it down cuz it takes a lifetime to start up) but other than that it’s great!! Worth the $200+ I spent on it!! Picture is great and somehow the sound is better that my tv!! It’s totally worth the money to be that pc in between big pc purchases!!

Runs faster than other reviewers seem to think
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm comparing this computer to an HP AMD A4 3300U that is 5 years old. I keep a number of different programs running at once and the older machine was bogging down in a situation where I had a dozen browser tabs open along with a few openoffice spreadsheets , a large Word document and maybe a few irfanview photos open. Sometimes with the old machine, it would lock up under such use. I have been experimenting with all of this plus having the Alexa app open and maybe running a video on PlutoTV at the same time as well, and the new machine seems to take this all in stride and has not locked up on me with so many things going on at the same time. On sale, the machine is bargain priced and significantly lower priced than anything on that on line site whose name will not be uttered has. What is not to like? Win 10 has some useful features Win 7 doesn't have, including a built in mic so Alexa runs. This is not a gamer's machine but used as intended it works fine. I think the screen on the plutoTV video is good too. It's an old school but new school machine and that suits me perfectly.

Slow
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was looking for something serviceable to carry back and forth to classes and talked myself into buying this instead of what I really wanted because my performance needs are minimal (type notes and read articles online). I got what I paid for. The machine is slow enough that it may as well be a Commodore 64 and can not scroll webpages or word processing documents smoothly. At a mere 45 WPM, the machine should be able to keep up with my typing, whether in documents or signing into websites, but lags. After waiting several minutes for bestbuy.com website to load properly so I could leave a review, I gave up and used my iPhone instead.
