I am sorry that you had this happen to you. That does sound frustrating.
There is a possibility that the cartridges still have ink, but that the printhead is clogged. There is an automatic routine that can be run on the printer to clean the printhead. Consult your user guide if you don't know how to do that.
If that helps, it could be that the printer was turned off using a power strip or switch. The printer must always be turned off with the power button on the printer itself. That lets the it ‘park’ so that the cartridges are protected from excessive drying.
If that doesn't help and it seems this was caused by a defective cartridges, it is always an option to contact the seller about that.
