We are "senior citizens" and do not print out that much, but three of these ink cartridges have produced less than 20 pages each.

Fortunately my order from HP direct came in, put another new 564XL Black in and my printer was back in operation. I lost my receipt and didn't feel like going through the hassle of trying to return it without a receipt.

I'm very sorry that you are not happy with price. Common cost-cutting measures are to use draft printing and to set it to print just black whenever possible.
Also, turning the printer off when it is not used for a while might help, just be sure to use the power button on the printer itself to turn it off. That way, it will 'park' the cartridges where they can protect the printhead from drying out and clogging.
