Ensured vent was clear and ran the clean printhead function, but still resulted in a dry head. After a couple of days, the cartridge finally dispelled enough black ink to allow legible prints.

I'm sorry to find that you were having problems with the black cartridge, but glad that it worked out eventually.
It is difficult to diagnose long distance, but this sounds like you had a clogged printhead. The cleaning you ran probably helped, but the routine printer maintenance was able to finally get the clogs cleared.
If this was the case, it might have been that the printer had been turned off using a power strip or switch. It is very important to always turn the printer off using the printer's power button. That allows enough time for the printer to "park" in a position that protects the printhead from excess drying.

I'm sorry that the cartridge did not last as long as you thought it should.
Actual number of pages printed depends on many factors, high-density photos and the like use ink more quickly and lots of black is used on just about every print job.
If you feel there was something wrong with a cartridge, you can always contact the seller to see about a replacement.
