You can almost buy a new printer for the cost of ink. Otherwise it works just fine, and the combo pack is a slightly better deal than buying separately.

Though it might be cheaper to buy higher capacity cartridges I print relatively little and cartridges can dry out. With this 2 pack I am sure to have a new set on hand.

Overpriced but little choice

My big issue is with the HP printer I purchased without realizing it forces you to use only HP ink. There's some sort of code of the cartridge which the printer reads. If it's not an HP genuine cartridge it will not accept the ink. I will not be buying another HP printer because of this so-called 'feature' which is designed to get you to buy the expensive printer and its expensive ink.

I am sorry that you don't consider genuine cartridges to be a good value. However, many are able to successfully use re-manufactured ones.
The re-manufacturing process often damages the cartridges, so they don't always work properly. Also, if an older cartridge is being used, it might not have the correct circuitry to work with the newer printers.
I can certainly understand wanting to find more affordable options for your printing! Toward that end, you might be interested in using the XL version of the cartridges. Many consider them a better value.
Also, here are some things that might help lower your ink usage:
- You can use the printer's draft mode and black-only settings, whenever possible, to save ink.
- Shutting the printer down between uses can also help; however, always use the power button on the printer itself to turn it off. That lets it ‘park’ so that the cartridges are protected from excessive drying.

The irritating thing is that HP activated firmware that detects 3rd party cartridges and renders the printer useless until their HP cartridges are installed. My next printer will likely be another brand.
