That does sound disappointing indeed. I am sorry to hear about this, but hope to help.
It is generally agreed that XL cartridges are a better value. How long a cartridge will last is based on how you use it.
When your prints are high-density (such as images and graphs), they will use more ink, especially if the paper is very absorbent and the air is dry.
Here are some things that might help you:
- Use the printer's draft mode whenever possible, to help stretch out both black and colored ink
- Always use the power button on the printer itself to turn it off. That gives it time to ‘park’ so that the cartridges are protected from excessive drying.
- Shutting the printer down between uses will save electricity and a few drops of ink here and there that are used to keep the inkjets cleared and ready for your next print job.
When it appears that the product was low on ink or defective when you got it, you can look into returning or exchanging it. Information about that can be found at:

While it might be time to get a new printer, there are some remediation steps you should try first. The automatic printer maintenance setting is a good start. Manually clean the print rollers in the printer and the cartridge's printhead.
