Normally, ink usage determines how long a cartridge lasts. High-density prints (such as images and graphs) will use more ink, especially if the paper is very absorbent and the air is dry.

Don't last and overpriced
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Like all other brands of printers (canon, epson, brother, etc.) HP ink cartridges do not last long at all. I'm sure this is why printers are so cheap because companies know that once you have their printer you'll be spending unbelievable amounts of money on cartridges. On top of this - my HP printer will not print in black and white without a working color cartridge installed so if I don't use a lot of color it will eventually dry up and need to be replaced anyway. Ridiculous.

I also tried to cancel for other reason (was going to switch to just black) but was too late. I just tried to install the black ink today and realized it was not the HP63 but already opened. I assumed the order was correct and did not see the 60 on the box. Can I return and exchange ??

Buying the XL versions of the cartridges might be a better value for you. Here are a few facts about ink usage that might help too:
- A high-density print (like a photo or graph) will use the ink more quickly than a text-only document, especially if the paper is highly absorbent and the environment is dry.
- Using the draft and black only settings on your printer can help save ink.
- Shutting the printer down between uses can help. However, always use the power button on the printer itself to turn it off. That will let the printer 'park' itself so that the cartridges are protected from excess drying.
- If you suspect that the low page yield was caused by a defective cartridge, you are always free to contact the seller about it.

It was running low on color so I bought a combo pack of HP 60 CLR + HP 60 BLK. The color cartridge is fine but when the black cartridge is inserted the software says it has a "short" and won't let me due anything. I'll take it back to store but quality control has slipped.
