I regret this happening to you. Generally, ink usage determines how long each individual cartridge lasts. High-density prints (like images and graphs) will use more ink, especially if the paper is highly absorbent and the surrounding air is dry.
Here are some things that might help lower your ink usage:
- Consider using XL cartridges. Most people say they are a much better value
- Set the printer to draft mode whenever possible
- Shut the printer down between uses
- Always use the power button on the printer itself to turn it off. That gives it time to ‘park’ so that the cartridges are protected from excessive drying
- Subscribe to Instant Ink, then you only pay by the page and not for the cartridges themselves
If the poor performance appears to be due to a defective cartridge, please consider returning it to the seller.

Posted .Hi Kdka, sorry to hear you are experiencing an issue with HP 61XL High Yield Tri-color Ink Cartridge. If you suspect you have received a non-original cartridge, please contact the seller. To resolve the issue, you can try cleaning the electrical contacts as shown in Step 3 http://hp.care/2qsfLG1. If this doesn’t resolve the error please contact the seller for a replacement. Otherwise, contact HP Support for a replacement http://hp.care/2nbNQFi Note most printers in this product range can operate in single cartridge mode (i.e.: remove the black and operate with just the tricolor cartridge)

I was not familiar with this however it was simple and easy with the instruction and seeing which one I needed based on the number. I only use the ink to print papers for school and for small projects. I am no paper expert so to me ink is ink and it gets the job done.
