Unhappy with printer so bad review for the ink...

This is probably an indictment of the printer, but the cartridges do not last long and we are very infrequent printers. Most annoying is that even if black ink if full, I can print if the color is out unlike previous HP printers I have owned. I would get the new epson with the large ink reservoir if I had a chance to redo it.

Printer Ink not up to HP Standards

I have been using HP Products (Mainly Laptops, Printers and even a camera back in the day) and for years I have had very good results, which is why I am so surprised very disappointed to find out that I am only getting approx 90-100 black printed pages using the #62 original ink cartridge ($18.49) which states 200 pages. I understand the 200 pages is approximate, but I am actually getting less than half! That is just not acceptable to me.

      Hi,

I'm sorry that your ink appears to have been used up too quickly. Unless you were printing mostly high density prints, it does seem like you should have been able to print more.

Here are a few facts about ink usage that might help:
      - A high-density print (like a photo) will use the ink more quickly than a text-only document, especially if the paper is highly absorbent and the environment is dry.
      - Using the draft and black only settings on your printer can help save on ink.
      - Shutting the printer down between uses can result in some savings. However, always use the power button on the printer itself to turn it off. That will let the printer 'park' so that the cartridges are protected from excess drying.
      - Many find that Instant Ink is a good value. Details about the pay-by-the page plans can be found here: instantink.com

If you feel that the poor page yield was caused by a defective cartridge, you have the option to contact us at: hp.com/contactHP

Ink seems to run out too quickly

I do not believe I do more printing than years ago, but the ink appears to run out far too quickly. On occasion, I have been able to significantly extend its life by tapping the apparently expired cartridge on a hard surface. Perhaps the ink can't take ambient storage conditions.

      Hello Jimm,

I am sorry to hear that you had trouble with the cartridges. I'm going to guess that the cartridges might need cleaning. It is a pretty easy process. Your printer should have an automatic routine to do that. Check the user guide, if you don't know how to start the cleaning.

If that helps, the printer might have been turned off using a power strip or switch. The printer should always be turned off using the power button on the printer itself. That will let the printer 'park' itself so that the cartridges are protected from excess drying. The drying can cause clogs to form in the tiny nozzles that spray the ink onto the paper.

Not sure why tapping would help, unless the printer is sitting unused for significant periods of time. Ink is a mixture. Perhaps it does settle a bit under certain conditions.
