My previous HP all-in-one, a HP 7520, used three colors, photo black and black on five separate cartridges. My 7640 uses two cartilages: black and three colors. The problem here is that once one color is used up you have to buy a new color cartridge. On the other hand, having three colors in one cartridge may save money if you use the three colors equally. I am not sure if it is important that there is no XL version of this cartridge.
