I wanted to install it into my printer on July 12, 2023 and noticed that the expiration on the box was July 2023. Unfortunately, the return date has passed.

Yes you do have to open it and put it in the printer to find out it is defective. Apparently, they can sell defective products with no responsibility. The family and I are done with Best Buy. They informed me this info was on their refund policy page somewhere. Too bad it was not on the page where you order the item. You have to find out the hard way. Ordered the same thing next day from Amazon and it worked great.

The result was the Operating System went down after a technical assistant took over my computer remotely. I could not reconnect or get anyone in customer service due to long wait times. I took my computer to a local company for the repair. I will never use Geek Squad or buy from Best Buy again. Horrible customer service; would not respond to emails.

Upon placing this cartridge, my HP printer responded with an error message, that one or more of the ports on the cartridge is missing. Unacceptable for a brand new factory ink cartridge.

I am sorry that this happened to you. Usually how long a cartridge lasts depends on its usage.
You can avoid some ink usage by turning the printer off when it is not in use. However, the printer should always be turned off using the printer's power button. That will let the printer 'park' so the cartridge is protected from excess drying. That can cause clogs to form in the tiny nozzles that spray the ink onto the paper.
If you think the cartridge wasn't properly filled and don't want to try taking back to a local Best Buy, you can try contacting them about a return by mail.
According to the Best Buy website: "If you receive a product that is damaged in shipping, defective or that is not the product you ordered, please return it during your return and exchange time period to Best Buy and we'll arrange for a replacement. If you would rather return the item by mail during your return and exchange time period, please call us for special instructions at 1-888-BEST BUY (1-888-237-8289)."

This is the second time ordering HP printer cartridges through Best Buy and the ink was already empty after opening as if it was refurbished or returned. I'm very sorry that you think the price is too expensive. There are alternatives, but they will not have the quality. Also, if 3rd party ink damages your printer, it might void your warranty.
You can try using draft mode and setting the printer to use just black ink when possible. That can save. Also, turning the printer off between uses (always using the power button on the printer to turn it off) can help.
