It advertised somewhere around 600 pages of printing capability at a cost of about $40. I got home and installed it and began to print again. I printed about 40 pages and it was out of ink ($1 per page is pretty steep). Perhaps this one was defective, but I didn't bother to take it back as I figured they wouldn't believe me anyway. Beyond disappointed.

I'm sorry that the cartridge did not last as long as you thought. The page yield is approximate and based on industry-standard ISO testing.
Actual number of pages depends on many factors, high-density photos and the like use ink more quickly and lots of black is used on just about every print job.
If you feel there was something wrong with a cartridge, you can always contact the seller to see about a replacement.

I am sorry to find that the cartridge didn’t last long for you. I can understand if you are not happy about that and about it clogging up.
It is a good practice to verify if the cartridges you receive are authentic. That is fairly easy to do if you check the things indicated at: hp.com/go/anticounterfeit

The HP - 62XL High-Yield Ink Cartridge - Black didn't work and a Best Buy employee would not give me a refund because I had opened the package. Obviously I had to open the box and installed the cartridge to realize it was a bad one. The manager of the store finally agreed replaced the cartridge.

I am sorry to hear that you were sent a cartridge that ran out quickly. If you weren't printing high-density print jobs, there was probably something wrong with the cartridge.
High-density prints will use up a cartridge rapidly, especially if the paper is highly absorbent and the environment is dry. Also, a lot of black is used in just about every page printed.
Using the draft and black only settings on your printer helps with savings on ink. Also, shutting the printer down between uses can help. However, you always have to use the power button on the printer itself to turn it off. That will let the printer 'park' itself so that the cartridges are protected from excess drying.
If you think the poor performance was due to something wrong with the cartridge, you can contact the seller to see about a refund or exchange.

The printer did not recognize the black ink cartridge. Now it works with only the color cartridge and is in "single cartridge" mode.
