I don't do very much printing but am always surprised by how often I need to reorder ink. The ink cartridges are ridiculously expensive. HP has to be making a huge profit off their ink. Best Buy's prices for HP ink is about the same price as I can find through other sources such as Amazon so the overpricing is an HP issue.

I am sorry that you have had this experience. The advertised estimates of pages are based on a standard set of prints used by the industry. How each individual cartridge will perform for you is determined by your own usage and environmental factors.
Perhaps you were printing a lot of high-density print jobs. High-density prints (such as images and graphs) will use more ink, especially if the paper is highly absorbent and the surrounding air is dry.
Here are some things that might help lower your ink usage:
- Make use of the printer's draft mode whenever possible
- Shut the printer down between uses and using the option to print grayscale can save on colored ink usage
- Always use the power button on the printer itself to turn it off. That gives it time to ‘park’ so that the cartridges are protected from excessive drying
- Subscribe to Instant Ink, then you only pay by the page, not for the cartridges themselves
