It can be frustrating to not have cartridges last long. I can understand if you are disappointed.
Normally, ink usage determines how long a cartridge lasts. High-density prints (such as images and graphs) will use more ink, especially if the paper is very absorbent and the air is dry.
Here are some things that might help lower your ink costs:
- Make use of the printer's draft mode whenever possible, to help stretch out black and colored ink
- Using the black-only setting will save on colored ink usage.
- Always use the power button on the printer itself to turn it off. That gives it time to ‘park’ so that the cartridges are protected from excessive drying.
- Shutting the printer down between uses will save electricity and a few drops of ink here and there that are used to keep the inkjets cleared and ready for your next print job.

If it appears that poor performance is due to a defect or you were sent a cartridge already low on ink, please contact the seller.

I perform the diagnostics on the HP Envy 7640 and only the tricolor cartridge failed. I purchased another and diagnostics passed and printer begin to print in color and black and white. Sadly, I had thrown away my receipt a couple of days after purchase, and lost $42.48 too.

I'm sorry to hear that the tricolor cartridge failed after three weeks. You should have been able to use it much longer!
If a cartridge is defective, you would normally return it to the seller. If that is not possible, there is still hope. If it is a genuine HP cartridge, you need to verify that, using this site: hp.com/go/anticounterfeit
If it turns out to be a genuine cartridge, it is not empty, and it is not past the warranty ends date on the cartridge, you can contact HP support for a replacement: hp.com/contactHP

Store manger ensured me that going through HP for a replacement would be a simple process. It was a nightmare. Better off ordering the ink directly from HP instead of 2nd party vendor. Return process will be easier.

I'm also very sorry about the return nightmare. The normal procedure is to return it to the seller. If you bought it from a 2nd party vendor, we don't know how well it was handled once they got it.
It seems like you should have been able to return it to Best Buy.
