I'm very sorry that you got a cartridge that didn't work well. You could try having the printer run the cleaning routine to see if that helps the print quality.
The cartridge should be stamped with a "warranty ends" date, if that date is close, or has passed, then it is very old. If that is the case, I recommend that you contact the seller for a replacement.

Printed approximately 50 pages before it told me it was out. We ended up buying a different printer to get away from these cartridges

I am sorry to find that the cartridge didn’t last long for you. I can understand if you are not happy, but rest assured that we take your feedback very seriously.
Ink usage usually determines how long a cartridge lasts. High-density prints (such as images and graphs) will use more ink, especially if the paper is highly absorbent and the surrounding air is dry.
Here are some things that might help lower your ink usage:
- Make use of the printer's draft mode whenever possible
- Using the black-only setting will save on colored ink usage.
- Shut the printer down between uses
- Always use the power button on the printer itself to turn it off. That gives it time to ‘park’ so that the cartridges are protected from excessive drying
- Subscribe to Instant Ink, then you only pay by the page, not for the cartridges themselves

They're supposed to last longer, but they're also more expensive. However, after using them for awhile I definitely think they are worth the extra cost.
