There are two possibilities. One is that the printer didn't register the ink inside the cartridge. This is the most likely scenario. The other possibility is that the cartridge contained no ink due to an error or leak. You could try to reinsert the cartridge after restarting the printer to get it to register. According to the Best Buy site's Return & Exchange Policy information:
"If you receive a product that is damaged in shipping, defective or that is not the product you ordered, please return it during your return and exchange time period to a Best Buy store and we'll arrange for a replacement. If you would rather return the item by mail during your return and exchange time period, please call us for special instructions at 1-888-BEST BUY (1-888-237-8289). We will cover all reasonable and customary ground shipping fees."

Ink usage usually determines how long each individual cartridge lasts. High-density prints (like images and graphs) will use more ink, especially if the paper is highly absorbent and the surrounding air is dry.

Here are some things that might help lower your ink usage:
- Set the printer to draft mode whenever possible
- Shut the printer down between uses
- Always use the power button on the printer itself to turn it off. That gives it time to ‘park’ so that the cartridges are protected from excessive drying
- Subscribe to Instant Ink, then you only pay by the page and not for the cartridges themselves

The seller is responsible for the product you bought from them. If you believe there was something wrong with the cartridge that affected its performance you should contact them about it.

You might consider using XL cartridges. Most people say they are a much better value. Also, if you print a lot of photos or other high-density printouts, Instant Ink might be a good option for you. You only pay by the page and not for the cartridges themselves.

The seller is responsible for the product you bought from them. If the poor performance appears to be due to the individual cartridge itself, consider returning it to the seller.

Historically printer manufacturers used their own methods for estimating page yield. However, this made it difficult to compare different products. Nowadays, the published page yield is based on the Industry Standard for measuring yields (refer to International Standards Organization ISO 24711). The actual yield varies considerably based on the content of the printed pages, the frequency of printing, the ink used in set-up etc. You may find that you will get more pages when printing in Fast draft mode. XL size cartridges offer up to 50% lower cost per page compared with standard size cartridges. Our recommendation would be that you leave your printer powered on in normal usage conditions, only power it down if you will not use it for an extended period of time (i.e.: longer than one month).
