I am unhappy to hear that you were sent a defective cartridge. That had to have been frustrating!
When you receive a cartridge from a vendor that is defective, you can:
- request a replacement or a refund, if you are within the time where you are able to return it.

The cartridges are compact but meant to provide lots of ink. Regarding how long they last, that depends on usage. Did you print many pages at once? That will impact the length of time. Print each page carefully to save ink and turn off the printer if idle. There are XL cartridges and combo packs that provide additional ink. Regular maintenance goes a long way for saving ink as well.

The ink was left in the whole time from start to finish but still dried out. Wish ink worked the same way as tires. A discount for bad quality.

I am sorry to find that you had this problem, but I might have some advice to help.
It is likely that the cartridge got clogged and is not letting the ink through the tiny inkjets. When there are clogs the cleaning routine from the printer's menu might need to be run more than once to clean out the clogs completely.
If you only print occasionally, it is a good idea to shut the printer down between uses. It is important to always use the printer's power button to turn it off. That gives it time to ‘park’ so that the cartridge is protected from excessive drying which leads to clogging
The seller is responsible for the quality of what is sent. Contact the seller when a cartridge is not satisfactory.

If it appears that the poor performance you got is due to a defect or you were sent a cartridge already low on ink, please contact the seller.
According to the Best Buy website: "If you receive a product that is damaged in shipping, defective or that is not the product you ordered, please return it during your return and exchange time period to Best Buy and we'll arrange for a replacement. I am very sorry that you had this experience. The cartridges supplied with a new printer are used to initialize the printer and usually do not last as long as the replacements you'll buy.
Unless there was something wrong with a cartridge, ink usage determines how long it lasts. High-density prints (such as images and graphs) will use more ink, especially if the paper is highly absorbent and the surrounding air is dry.
Here are some things that might help lower your ink usage:
- Consider using XL cartridges. Most people say they are a much better value
- Make use of the printer's draft mode whenever possible
- Using the black-only setting will save on colored ink usage.
- Shut the printer down between uses
- Always use the power button on the printer itself to turn it off. That gives it time to ‘park’ so that the cartridges are protected from excessive drying
- Subscribe to Instant Ink, then you only pay by the page, not for the cartridges themselves
If the poor performance appears to be due to a defective cartridge, please consider returning it to the seller.
