I think I got about 20 uses out of it before the ink dried up. I checked the box that it came in and the ink had been expired for a year and I only had the ink for about 2 months. I will remember to check the expiration dates from now on.

I can understand if you are disappointed with the cartridges you were sent. You should have gotten ones that printed more.
The date on the box is not an expiration date, but the date that the warranty expires. Sometimes it has sat on the shelf for a long time. Carefully stored cartridges last a long time after that date has passed. However, an outdated cartridge often is found to have been refilled.
It is possible that the cartridge is just clogged and not letting the ink through the inkjets. If the ink levels are good, there is a cleaning routine available from the printer's menu that you can use to clear out the tiny nozzles. The routine might need to be run more than once to clean the clogs out completely.
If you only print occasionally, it is a good idea to shut the printer down between uses. However, it is important to always use the power button on the printer itself to turn it off. That gives it time to ‘park’ so that the cartridge is protected from excessive drying which leads to clogging

It was probably a default because the one I had previous lasted a lot longer than this one.
