My boss did not want to use it because it could possibly malfunction. Clerk at pickup counter did not want to process the refund. Manager had to be called to process a refund even after clerk insisted it was impossible.

I am not printing essays, pictures, or anything that burns through the ink. The cartridges just do not last long at all.

A low rating is understandable, since they didn't work for long. I regret that this happened to you.
I can suggest a few things that might result in ink savings for you:
- Using the printer's draft mode can stretch out both black and colored ink
- Using the black-only setting will save on colored ink usage.
- Turn off the printer between uses; however, always use the printer's power button to shut it off. That gives it time to ‘park’ in a way that protects the cartridges from drying and clogging up.
- Think about enrolling in Instant Ink. Subscription plans allow you to pay by the page. Check out the details at: instantink.com
If it appears that poor performance is due to a defect, or you were sent cartridges already low on ink, you can look into returning or exchanging them either to the store or by mail.
