He sold me a tri-color cartridge instead of a black one! Now I'll have to return again and get the correct one - black!!!

I am sorry that the cartridge didn't last long for you. That has to be distressing.
Normally, ink usage determines how long a cartridge lasts. High-density prints (such as images and graphs) will use more ink, especially if the paper is very absorbent and the air is dry.
If you feel that you didn't get enough pages printed because of a defect, you can look into returning or exchanging it. Information about that can be found at:

If you are buying cartridges every month, I'm so sorry. Unless you print a few hundred pages a month, your cartridges should last a few months. There are a few things to check. First, run a test print page on the printer. This test is to eliminate any other issues. Check inside the printer for leaks. Clean the print rollers to remove dry ink. Lastly, check the print preview before printing anything.
