Problems printing black ink are attributed to a variety of factors. Still, I apologize your customer experience was lacking. HP hopes to provide excellent-quality cartridges. To improve your experience, try adjusting the printer settings. Increase the print quality. Manually clean the print rollers with a damp cloth. Run the automatic printer cleaning in the printer. I hope these suggestions resolve the poor print quality.

But seems to be more expensive. The cartridges don’t last very long.

The ink cartridges are defective, avoid buying. HP wants their customers to purchase directly from them in their "instant ink program". I waisted my money and in addition the cartridges damaged my HP 6960 printer. The same can be said with the HP 902 black ink cartridge; which kept saying it was a counterfeit ink cartridge.

I regret that you have had this experience. I can understand if you were disappointed.
Generally, when the printer says a cartridge is counterfeit, it is counterfeit. However, it could just be defective. Either way, the seller is responsible for the product you bought from them.

I'm sorry that you don't like the fact that the printer uses color cartridges when you just print in black and white. Unfortunately the type of printer you have has much different cartridges than a lot of the other HP printers.
Because the printer uses separate color cartridges (rather than a tri-color one), you will get an error message if any one of the cartridges is low. This online document explains that: support.hp.com/document/c04331666
If you are upset because you only want to print in black and white, you can change the settings to print black only. Now, you will still (very rarely) have to get color cartridges because the tiny nozzles that spray the ink onto the paper will clog unless they are cleared regularly. When you are not using a color, the printer will have to use a tiny bit of ink during maintenance to clear the nozzles for that color.

Color is not good and shows a quarter empty after printing 1 test sheet. Below I will not recommend knowing there is no alternative. Between iffy ink and 3 minute maintenance every other time I print when the ink is gone, so is the printer.

I was sorry to hear that the cartridges didn’t last long for you. The advertised estimates of pages are based on a standard set of prints used by the industry.
Ink usage generally determines how long a cartridge lasts. High-density prints (like images and graphs) use more ink, especially if the paper is highly absorbent and the surrounding air is warm and dry.
Things that might help you to save money on ink:
- Make use of the printer's draft mode whenever possible
- Shut the printer down between uses. That can save ink and electricity
- Always use the power button on the printer itself to turn it off. That gives it time to ‘park’ so that the cartridges are protected from excessive drying
- Subscribe to Instant Ink, then you only pay by the page, not for the cartridges themselves

I empathize with your plight. Everyone wants their ink cartridges to last a long time. Luckily, a few solutions exist. - Start with keeping your printer in top shape. Turning off the printer helps to save the cartridge from getting dry. Printer maintenance goes a long way as well. - The other option is to buy XL cartridges or limit the use of color cartridges.
