From out of the box it wouldn’t setup. I own 2 other HP printers so I already have the app & know how to use it. I kept getting on the app cannot finish setting up, try again later. I even went into the printer itself and updated the firmware and it still wouldn’t connect. Calling support & getting someone to speak to was a task. Support told me not to use the app and to set it up through the computer, which took about a half hour with them going through it. After finishing getting to work on the computer & on iPads & phone. App still said failed to connect but support said just don’t use it, so it was now useless for this printer. The next day I couldn’t print from laptop. Did the troubleshooting shooting but nothing. Then had a low pitch connect noise coming from it. Also very loud when printing. Returned it & got a Canon instead.

Overall the item is ok, can be a bit temperamental on the app. The App is ok but could use changes like using the device on multiple smartphones

After setting up countless printers over my IT career, I've learned that the "perfect" printer doesn't exist - it's all about finding the right fit for your specific needs. The HP Envy 6165e caught my attention with its sleek design and aggressive pricing, but there's more to this story than meets the eye. Right out of the box, I was impressed by the 6165e's modern aesthetic. This isn't your typical boxy printer. HP squashed it down into a low-profile design that actually looks decent sitting on a shelf. The white and cream color scheme beats the usual office-gray monotony, and at just 5.4 inches tall, it'll slip under most cabinets. Setup was refreshingly straightforward. The HP Smart app walked me through the process without the usual headaches, and the 2.4-inch touchscreen actually responds when you tap it (revolutionary, I know). The self-healing Wi-Fi feature HP touts? It's not just marketing fluff - this thing reconnected itself after I deliberately reset my router to test it. What struck me most during testing was the print quality. Documents come out crisp with deep blacks that don't smudge, thanks to HP's pigment-based black ink. Color prints pop nicely too, though I noticed photos tend to be over-brightened - great for Instagram-worthy snapshots, less ideal if you're trying to match on-screen colors exactly. The automatic duplex printing works smoothly, and HP's trick of letting you print on the back of photos for custom cards is genuinely clever. Print speeds, however, tell a different story. At 10 pages per minute for black text, you'll be waiting around if you're printing that 30-page report. Here's where things get interesting. The 6165e uses HP's traditional two-cartridge system - one black, one tri-color. In plain English, this means when your cyan runs out, you're replacing the entire color cartridge even if yellow and magenta are still half full. The page yields are... optimistic at best. HP claims about 160 black pages and 120 color pages per cartridge set. In my testing with typical mixed documents, I was reaching for replacements sooner than expected. This is clearly a printer designed with HP's Instant Ink subscription in mind - they even throw in 6 months free to hook you. Looking for a reliable everyday printer that won't break the bank upfront? The 6165e delivers, especially at its current price point. It's perfect for families printing homework, occasional photos, and the odd Amazon return label. The compact design and solid wireless features make it apartment-friendly, and if you subscribe to Instant Ink, the running costs become much more manageable. Small businesses or anyone printing more than 50 pages a week should probably look for an upgraded model. Bottom line: The HP Envy 6165e is a well-designed home printer that does exactly what HP intended: gets you in the door with attractive hardware, then keeps you coming back for ink. If you're okay with that relationship and print light to moderately, it's actually a solid choice. The print quality impresses, the setup is painless, and it looks good doing it. Just go in with eyes open about those ongoing ink costs, and strongly consider that Instant Ink subscription if you want to avoid sticker shock at the cartridge counter.

I can't get it to scan anything. I've tried several times-to connect to either my phone or my laptop. The printer comes up, but there's no "scan" feature. Read the directions several times.... So, with my school homework, I have to take a photo of every page (with my phone), email it to myself then upload them to my school email/homework. Also, the Menu window is way to small to type an email address in.

This printer has a sleek design and relatively small form factor for a "full size" printer with a 5.3" X 17.07" X 20.19" footprint. Setup was fast and easy and I was very happy with how it was easy to print from just about any device in our home. Not one to print from my phone, I found myself in need for this function and with the app, it was super easy! Photo print quality is very good and really a place where this device excels. With a very average print speed of 7 pages per minute color and 10 pages per minute for black and white this moves along at a good pace. The smaller footprint does limit the size of the paper tray, which is tiny. For this reason, I think it would be good for occasional printing in a household with several different devices. I am not a fan of tri color cartridges as invariably, one color runs out way before the others and you are stuck putting all that extra ink into recycle world which I view as a waste of time money and a potential stress on the environment. So if you are using this for jobs with a logo with primarily one color you could be faced with sending back a considerable amount of unused and totally viable ink. The subscription ink service is not for me but I can see where it would be useful to keep just enough in stock to never run out. From my initial use and understanding of the "instant ink" program the pricing seems very reasonable. With solid mechanics and print quality and a small footprint this could be perfect for users who need small runs of various printed material on an occasional basis.

We had moved and needed a printer. This one seemed to have good reviews snd worked well for them. It didn’t for me. I could never get past the scanner alignment process without an error. Connecting with the “geek squad” was an exercise in futility. Even they threw their figurative hands in the air. Of course, not after trying to extort $124 dollars for a in home visit. For an $80 printer? I returned this one for an office jet 8120e which I should have bought in the first place.

I was on the phone with Geek Quad for over an hour trying to connect the printer to my laptop and it would not work. Also, the power cord continues to fall off the back of the printer. I am so disappointed. It was an inexpensive HP. However, I've had an HP for over 25 years and it still works but not wi-fi enable.

This printer is garbage. I have spent days troubleshooting, installing/reinstalling/removing/resetting/updating software, firmware, etc. Constant screaming noise, takes multiple PWs/wifi connections to print one page. HP support is non-existent. Do not buy this piece of garbage or any HP printer for that matter. Lesson learned!

just bought, used twice to print maybe 20-30 sheets of paper and now getting a load paper error and there is paper in it. Tried taking back to BB and was told can't do anything for me but GeekSquad would charge me $100 to see whats wrong with it. Only paid $89 for it brand new. DO NOT BUY

This is my second HP Envy printer, and a step up from my previous model. I like that this printer has a touchscreen display, and after turning on will provide you with the QR code to scan and start setup process (it's also on the back of the quick start guide). Setup is quite simple, and I was already familiar with the app from the last model, so that all went very smoothly. This model is also an inkjet model, so you can sign up for a monthly ink plan based on your user needs. With the type of printer this is I doubt you will need anything higher than the 100 page per month plan. 10 page plan (lowest tier) starts at $1.49 per month with the highest, 700 page plan, being $27.99 per month. They also give you 6 months of free ink, so you have time to figure out your usage needs. However, this is not an office printer, it only prints 10 black & white pages per minute or 7 color pages per minute. I mostly wanted this for printing photos, and some light paper printing here and there. It claims to fit 100 pages in the bin, even though it doesn't look like that many pages would fit. So that tells you right there this is not a workhorse style printer, but more for small stuff/amounts. I found the app easy to use. Printing directly from my phone, or from my laptop, or even the ipad were all easy to do. The pages were crisp and clean. The photos I printed came out nice as well. The colors were vibrant and matched the original photos fairly closely. Depending on what your personal needs/wants are this would be a nice home printer for most people.
