I'll begin by saying that after spending a couple of days with this printer, I had no problem with it hardware wise at all. The setup went well, connected to my wifi, set up the downloadable smartphone app, hooked it up with various devices in the house. One of the first things i tried was the scan function, since I've had problems with that in prior HP printers. No issues here. Using photo paper, sent images from the smartphone to the printer, very good quality. So what's the problem? The issue is, I hadn't gotten through the first day when I got a message "10 days ink left." How's it know that? Well, it counts pages. I guess the best way to describe it is that this is a locked printer. It forces you to buy in to the HP Ink Now program. You sign into the program, and it automatically sends you ink when they think you need it. There are two cartridges in the printer - a black and a muliticolor. They also offer various options - either send you the pertinent cartridge as it depletes, or monthly options for $5, $10, etc. depending on the amount of pages you normally use. I have a problem with this. I have a big problem with this. Does it remind you of something? Maybe buying phone minutes? Gigs of data? I searched Google and I don't see cartridges for this printer anywhere. You're forced into this online arrangement with HP. We all know ink is expensive - i've seen people do the math, and it comes to thousands of dollars per quart. More expensive than any other liquid you can buy except for maybe some exotic pharmaceuticals. I like to bargain shop - printer ink doesn't go on sale often, but there are deals. Sometimes 10 or 20% off, if you're lucky, maybe a buy one get one deal. But with the arrangement that comes with this printer, you're locked into sole source. And i don't like sole source - anything. Now some may see this as convenient - it takes care of itself, no trips to the store, etc. I see your point, but I just don't look at it that way. Lastly, this printer comes in at $199 list price. Printers are normally discounted since once you buy it, they know you have to buy their ink. But since this printer comes with what is essentially a mortgage, they should actually be giving it away for free!

A fantastic upgrade from my first Envy.

The HP ENVY Photo 7855 serves it's purpose as a general, everyday printer for most home/personal tasks. I previously owned an ENVY 4504 that I purchased on Black Friday a few years ago, since all I needed was really basic printing for school. The thing that surprised me the most about this new model is that it prints both B/W and color pages a lot faster than my old Envy did. It also holds a lot more paper so I don't need to be loading the tray as often, and in terms of build quality it seems a lot sturdier and more "well made" than my older one. I can definitely say that HP has been spending a lot of their resources on improving their printers over the last several years. Taking the printer out of the box and setting it up wasn't as much of a breeze, particularly because I have HP Instant Ink and had everything set up on my old Envy, so I had to spend a bit more time moving everything over and at one point contacting HP Connected support to get my subscription moved over to my new printer. After jumping through that brief hurdle, everything else was smooth sailing. I am impressed with the print quality of the ENVY Photo 7855 for it being an inkjet printer. I recently purchased higher quality 32 lb copy paper that's generally meant for laser printers, but was really shocked to see just how amazing my B/W documents came out of this printer, and these were with default print quality settings in Windows! Printing color documents with text also looked fascinating, but of course with any photo printing on non-photo paper, the images looked "okay" although not as high-quality as they would be on actual photo paper. I wish HP included a trial set of photo paper to use but they did not include any. Overall, the HP ENVY Photo 4855 meets all of my general everyday printing needs and I'm sure it will for you too. If you fairly do a lot of printing, I recommend signing up for HP's Instant Ink service which saves me trips to the store and doesn't cost me as much money. For business and enterprise users, I'd recommend looking for a laser printer.

      Hi, Matt.

I’m sorry to hear that your printer has stopped working. I can understand why that would be an unwelcome and frustrating surprise, especially if you’ve relied on your printer for several years, so I’ll point you toward some resources and provide some information that I hope will help.

I can’t tell from your review what issues your printer has faced or why it will not work, so I recommend you visit a page on our support site that has diagnostic tools for various problems, including connectivity issues and cartridge errors. There you’ll also find a general-purpose tool called the HP Print and Scan Doctor. If you use Windows, the tool will help identify and guide you through solutions to a wide range of common printing and scanning issues. Visit that page here:

HP also offers extended warranties, which you might have purchased. You can verify the warranty using the following link: support.hp.com/us-en/checkwarranty
