Printer Works Well But It's Out of Ink Already

I am a teacher and made this purchase because I needed a printer to help with remote learning, due to the Covid-19 situation. I bought the printer because it was advertised as having enough ink for 8 MONTHS. Wow! That sounded great! Well, here we are three weeks later and....NO MORE INK after printing only 40 pages. I went back and looked in the box thinking that there was another cartridge ready to go, because sometimes printers come with just a little bit of "starter ink." Nope. So now I bought an additional $150.00 worth of ink just so I can keep up until June (hopefully). Be wary of this product. I'm disappointed. If someone from Best Buy could contact me, that would be great.

      Hi, Andrea.

I’m sorry to hear that you've not had the experience you expected with the printer, and I'm sorry for any resulting inconvenience. I can understand why your discovery would be quite unsettling, so I’ll offer some information and resources that I hope will help.

The eight months of ink specified in the deal you purchased is not boxed with the printer itself. Rather, it comes in the form of our Instant Ink program, in which HP communicates automatically with your printer to know when it’s out of ink so we can deliver more. I’m not certain why this did not happen, but I suspect you need to sign up for the Instant Ink program for it to start. You can do that here: instantink.com

If the issue remains unresolved, I recommend that you contact us directly at +1 800-474-6836 so we can help you assess the situation. (Please note that because of restrictions on personal movement and workplace attendance associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, wait times for agents are longer than normal. Thanks in advance for your understanding.) To expedite the process, I recommend gathering the following information before the call:

      - Model number
      - Serial number
      - Your location
      - Case number (from any previous contact with HP support)

The document feeder doesn’t work, even with 1-sheet. Know that it is under warranty but still annoying to get the during tax season and have to scan 10 pages individually. Prints fine. And is aesthetically pleasing.

It was a good price for the printer. The initial set up was extremely easy albeit a little lengthy. The only draw back from this wireless printer is that it's a bit on the slow side even printing on lower quality print. But we are happy with it overall.

This printer was not quite what I was expecting. I’m very familiar with printers as I’ve set dozens of them up throughout my life. I know HP to be a top brand in printers. I typically always lean towards business products because they seem to be more reliable than consumer ones. However, I wasn’t quite that impressed with this printer. My first impression of the printer was it feels kind of cheap. Not unusual for printers these days, but the plastic seems cheap and breakable and the parts don’t move that smoothly (Tray, extensions, printer cover). I know a percentage of the plastic is recycled which is great, but I feel like there could have been some better design and quality in it. Next, during the setup process after installing the ink which is straight forward, it wanted to print a test alignment page and then scan it to calibrate the headers. Well I made sure paper was in it and continued with the calibration. It acted like it printed but nothing came out, then it was asking for the next step to scan but I had nothing to scan. I had to reboot the printer and start the process over, this time it printed but it sucked up like 5 sheets of paper in the print. The print came out good except for the end of the paper printed on the other 4 sheets. Scanned and it said it was successful. The device is USB direct, Ethernet, or wireless connection which is nice for options. I used wifi as a temporary connection which I strongly dislike to use with printers as it always seems to cause problems at some point, but so far its working well. Scanned a document that came out nice. One thing I’m not a fan of is the interface. I’m more old school and like to install a software package where it installs the printer driver and any scanning software on your pc. Well here they have their own container of software. You can use your phone, tablet, or PC. I installed the HP software on my pc and it still didn’t add the printer to Windows, I had to go through a manual process to add it in Windows which may be a struggle or hassle for many people who aren’t that familiar with computers. HP seems to tout their software as all you need, but I’m not a fan of it. They have an option to open up their software, select “Print Documents” and it pops up a Window to find your files to print. No thanks, I like printing from inside my documents. The scanning seems okay. You can scan from the PC or directly from the printer, however their fancy software doesn’t setup Windows properly for it. If you can from the printer and I select my PC to scan to, Windows pops up options for WSD Scan Device. I select Scan from the list of 4 items, it scans, and then opens up my Libraries folder not knowing where the scan went. Not very good IMO. You can open up the HP Smart app on your PC to scan which works fine. You can preview, then save as pdf or jpg, and save, print, or share it. There are a lot of potential features such as cloud printing or printing from any device anywhere. Like I said, I’m more old school and like a straight forward printer that makes my life easy so I won’t be using much of the cloud features but I did try the scan and print feature from my iPhone while connected to wifi which was pretty nice. I was impressed it worked as well as it did. The printer also comes with an “8 months of ink”, which is basically a $40 prepaid card for their ink delivery service ($5/month for 100 pages Instant Ink plan) and appears to be an automatic process with your printer ordering it for you. Overall, I wasn’t a big fan of this printer initially because of the quality and it not appear to be working correctly at first with the printing but it has seemed to do better in the few days since. The print quality seems good and the scan quality seems decent. I’ll update the review once I’ve had more extended time to get a better experience with it.
