Set up wasn’t as friendly and you must use a cell phone. Other than that, this has been great!

Normally I wait for awhile before reviewing a purchase but decided to get this one out right away. I purchased this to replace my primary printer, an HP Office Jet Pro 8720 that finally gave up the ghost. Pros: -- Smaller footprint than the earlier model Office Jet Pro printers, and much lighter as well. -- Print quality is good for copies, printout of scan documents, and documents printed from a computer. Haven't tried fax yet. -- HP Smart App works pretty good. -- The automatic document feeder works really well. Documents are fed in without any "angling" which was a problem on earlier models. Cons: -- Took literally hours to set up network printing for my 4 devices -- 2 laptops and 2 desktops. -- Can no longer scan right at the printer. Must put document in ADF (or on glass) and initiate from computer. Could not install standard HP scan software, but scanning from the HP Smart App works fine and produces a good result. -- HP is really pushing their ink subscription service. It was constantly popping up during install. When I say no, I mean no. Don't keep pushing that in my face!! -- Noticed today that when I sent something to the printer after it had been idle for awhile that the print job hung. Status said the document was printing, printer was online, but nothing was happening. Had to reboot the printer to get the printing to initiate. Hope that was a one off. Will be keeping an eye on that one. Lessons learned: -- Even though this printer can connect to my 5ghz band and my networked laptop(s) are on the 5ghz band, a network connection could NOT be established for the computer in the install, regardless of which (and there are several) install app I used. It connected to 5ghz thru WPS with the router. This is what took me the longest to overcome. After some head scratching, I reset my laptop to the 2.4 ghz band and manually connected the printer to the 2.4ghz band and it was recognized by the HP Smart app -- and only that. -- I had originally set up my 2 printers wired with each Ethernet connected to a router set up in bridge mode because I was having earlier problems with wireless connectivity. Now the reverse is true. If the printer is wired to the bridge, it is not recognized, but is if wireless. I may tinker with this a little more to see if the bridge set up will work if the bridges are connected to the 2.4ghz band. I have spent hours on the network setup what's a few more? -- 1 final item. As part of the software downloads in the past, a printer icon would appear on the desktop and you could select it to see information about the printer and maybe some useful apps. Not so with this one. Possibly because the normal software download could not finish because the printer could not be detected by it, if I select that icon, the software starts up the installer again, thus making it useless. There is a work around. I can sign into my router from Firefox, look at attached devices, find the IP address for my printer, open another tab, type in the IP address and web services for the printer will display with basically the same information and options as what I would expect from the printer icon. "Klugey" but workable. -- If you want to give this printer a try, then I suggest the following: download and install the HP Smart app and use it exclusively to set up the printer. -- If you have a dual band router, manually connect the printer to the 2.4ghz band and set the computer (laptop or desktop) that you are trying to install the printer software on to that band as well. If you have only a 5ghz router, good luck. Bottom line for me: Good print quality Terrible setup software -- its like a shell game -- you get several options, only one of which will work and that's after a lot of experimentation. I remember the good old days when I bought and HP printer, went online, saw a full software choice for the printer, downloaded and ran it (after easily connecting it to my network) and everything worked fine. Since I have a good sized return window I will use the 9015 for awhile and either get used to it or return it. The only issue I have with returning it is that the other choices out there all have their own issues and I would expect most if not all HP Office Jet Pro printers to be set up the same way as mine so I would be replacing one problem with another!!
