This is my first gaming laptop. Normally, I prefer a desktop gaming rig because you get a lot more options for customizing the rig. This laptop actually has some incredible stats and if you aren't a stat person, all you have to do is turn it on and play a game. You will be sold.
I wont really go over the specs, because you can read that in the description but I will talk about the display. I was a bit disappointed that it didn't include a 4K display. I have another HP laptop that isnot a gaming rig and it has a 4K and it's an awesome display. However, when I started playing a game, I didn't really notice much difference. The fact that the display was clear and virtually lag free, I didn't question the lack of a 4K display anymore.
The one thing I would definitely suggest is that you keep the charging brick at close distance to this laptop. Although I never played with mine without it being plugged in, the fact that it comes with a 200W charger, told me all I needed to know about the battery life of this thing. Realistically, I wouldn't expect a gaming rig to have tremendous battery life because of the graphics cards, fans, etc. This was not a concern of mine, so I didn't even test it.
This laptop has all of the inputs you would expect from a current laptop. USB-C, USB-A, SD card reader, HDMI and even an Ethernet connection. Since this is a gaming laptop, you get the colored keyboard, but you don't get a numeric pad, touch screen and surprisingly no facial recognition to unlock the laptop. The keyboard works well and is pretty quiet overall. I paired mine with a Logitech gaming mouse and I couldn't be happier with the response of everything.
I played multiple online games for several hours and I never noticed the laptop getting too hot or the performance start to lag. I was pretty impressed by that. I also really liked the dedicated Omen button that takes you into the settings of the laptop for customization.
As I said previously, this is my first gaming laptop and I am pretty happy overall with it. I would definitely recommend this.

I received this HP Omen and I was somewhat reluctant, in that, I have never had a gaming laptop. But it didn’t take long to be impressed. When I opened the outer box it was shipped in you have this beautifully designed box containing the HP Omen 15.6 laptop. After all the necessary installation, passwords, WiFi, I was instantly hooked.
First off, this thing is EXTREMELY fast and appealing. It has all the bells and whistles as far as USB ports, HDMI, headphones jack, card reader. The power cord is well designed. I love the case, the color, the feel of the case, its very lightweight. I love the logo, I am impressed with all those things, but its what it can do. Its still a laptop that functions as a laptop that allows you to play killer games with killer graphics and sound.
But let me start with the keyboard. I have an Apple laptop, and I wish HP would sell their design to Apple or let them use it. The keys on this HP Omen laptop are the best I’ve ever typed on. They are just so responsive, to some, that may not matter, but again, its built to game but its still a VERY IMPRESSIVE laptop. Granted, it took me a while to find the power button, I’m used to a dedicated button you push this is located between two keys (F12 & Delete). After I read the instructions I found the key and have been impressed since. The buttons are easily accessible and responsive during a game.
My son is an avid COD player on one of the console systems, and he downloaded it on the Omen HP and UNFORTUNATELY, I have barely seen it since. We “tried” that on the Apple system and it was just too slow and the laptop would heat up considerably. No this HP Omen. The cooling system on this laptop is TOP OF THE LINE. He plays COD on the max settings and the highest the temp went to was 91C on the CPU and the highest on the GPU was 70C. I don’t think you can overheat this laptop.
Now to my most impressive item. The lights on the keyboard. Literally, I spent two hours just mesmerized by the combinations you can come up with. It seems endless and its just so cool, and the fact it all is controlled in the Command Center (which has a key on the keyboard that takes you right to it) is also impressive. In the Command Center you have so much at your fingertips. CPU temps/GPU temps, etc.
I love this computer. And if you are in the market for a Gaming laptop, as my son said, WOW this thing is AWESOME! Buy it, HP took a Gaming laptop and made it affordable. Trust me, you won’t be sorry.

This gaming laptop was an absolute gem for the price, especially for those dipping their toes into the gaming world. The display is bright, crisp, and smooth, thanks to its 144 Hz refresh rate - it wasn't like seeing games come to life like in more expensive models but it was good enough. Paired with the power of AMD Ryzen 7 and NVIDIA GeForce 1660 Ti graphics, this laptop offers seamless gameplay and sharp visuals at medium graphics. What truly stands out to me are its connectivity options. With an array of USB ports, HDMI, and even a Mini DisplayPort, this machine is ready to connect to just about anything you need. The Intel Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5 combo ensures a strong, stable connection, whether you're gaming online or streaming your favorite shows. Let's not forget about the storage! The 1TB SSD not only provides ample space for all my games and files but also ensures lightning-fast load times. And with the HP Wide Vision HD camera is just like any other laptop camera if you know what I mean. I snagged this laptop on sale, which made the deal even sweeter. If you're looking for a good entry-level gaming laptop that gives you bang for your buck, the HP OMEN is the way to go!

HP OMEN 15-EN0023DX…
TLDR: Best value for the money, period. True workhorse that can take anything you throw at it without any compromises.
Long Review:
This is a great laptop. I’ve been waiting for a very long time for AMD to come out with mobile CPUs that usher in the great performance we have been getting with their Ryzen desktop counterparts. The Ryzen 7 4800H definitely fits that bill and reigns in some very much appreciated computing power. I am a developer and really love the performance this machine has. I have upgraded the RAM in the system to 64GB of DDR4 @ 3200MHz (2x 16GB sticks - really appreciate that the RAM is not soldered on). One thing to note about the RAM is that this laptop does not provide XMP support, so what this means is if you don’t get low voltage RAM, you will not get the advertised speeds of the RAM you are buying (found this out the hard way when I got sticks that were 1.35V and pulled up Task Manager to see them only at 2666MHz instead of 3200MHz).
In terms of gaming performance, this thing definitely games… and it games very well. At 60FPS, the 1660 TI in here runs at the highest settings with no issues. If trying to game at 144FPS, then settings will have to be lowered. With medium settings in Fortnite and APEX, I was able to get ~144FPS consistently which was very surprising! The panel itself is also no slouch. I have not experienced any tearing or ghosting. The screen is buttery smooth and what more can be asked for in a gaming machine? (aside from a 240MHz screen, LOL)… The laptop gets a bit audible when gaming, however this isn’t much of an issue for me as I don’t mind since I use headphones (have Astro A40s and Audio-Technica ATH-R70x). Doing a backlight bleed test, I found my screen to have very minimal backlight bleed. Very happy with the screen HP put in this laptop.
When it comes to build quality, this laptop is very good. The chassis has very small flex and the keyboard is spaced apart well (I am very used to 10 keyless layouts so seeing it on the laptop is a welcomed change). When the temps are high, the heat is not noticeable on the keys. When pushing the laptop to it's limit (max load), i noticed the laptop only gets to 80 degrees Celsius on the CPU and 84 degrees Celcius on the GPU which is quite amazing (the cooling system in the laptop is definitely not just for looks but functions perfectly). To upgrade the RAM or SSDs is very painless as there are only 8 screws that need to be taken off. The laptop is just a bit heavier than a 16” MacBook Pro, so portability is not an issue. The only thing about the laptop build quality that may be of concern is the screen. The screen flexes very easily, however if you are careful with your laptop this may not be a concern at all.
The only con I have with this laptop is that it comes with a 1080P screen… Being a developer, I would’ve liked a 4K panel instead of a 1080P. I’m just very used to having all the screen real estate I can when having multiple windows up. Being as this is a gaming laptop first however, it’s understandable that a higher refresh rate screen at a lower resolution was chosen for this laptop and I cannot fault HP for this decision. One thing that I do appreciate very much is that the HDMI port is 2.0 and so I can use it in conjunction with the Mini-DisplayPort to connect to my 4K monitors to get 60FPS when I need the screen real estate (the majority of laptops only provide HDMI 1.4 ports, which means 4K @ 30FPS which is very discernible in my eyes).
The OMEN comes with:
- Ryzen 7 4800H (8 cores, 16 threads)
- 1080p 144HZ screen (97% SRGB, 300 nits brightness, & matte finish for anti-glare)
- 16GB DDR4 RAM @ 3200MHz in dual channel, 2x 8GB sticks (RAM is not soldered and I was able to upgrade to 64GB, 2x 32GB 3200MHz sticks at 1.2V)
- 1TB NVME SSD, specific one I got is the SK Hynix PC601 HFS001TD9TNG-L2A0A (rated at ~3400MB/s read and ~2500MB/s write, however using Crystal Disk Mark I got ~3450MB/s read and ~2190MB/s write)
- Wi-Fi 6 via Intel AX 200 card combines with Bluetooth 5.0 support (got ~600MB/s up and down with connected with my AX mesh network; Bluetooth connects flawlessly with my SoundCore Liberty 2 earbuds)
- 720p Webcam (quality is enough for video chatting and machine learning when mapping live image against statistical models)
- 6-cell 70.9Wh battery (got ~4 hours of use when only coding [running VMs, IDEs, servers, etc.], ~3 hours when only gaming [running League of Legends, Fortnite, Apex Legends, etc.] and ~9 hours only when watching videos or doing light work [video playback such as YouTube, browsing web, etc.] *please note your usage may render different results from mine based on your workloads)
- Multiple ports:
--- RJ-45 port for gigabit ethernet (got ~950MBps up and ~900 down when connected via CAT6 ethernet)
--- HDMI 2.0 for up to 4K display at full 60FPS (works great on my LG 4K monitors)
--- Mini-DisplayPort for up to 4k display at full 60FPS (works great on my LG 4K monitors)
--- 3.5mm headphone & microphone jack with DTS X Ultra for 3D Audio (works great with my Astro A40s)
--- Media Card Reader for SD cards
--- 3 USB Type A ports with USB 3.2 Gen 1 for 5Gbps throughput (the one on the left side provides charging while the laptop is sleeping)
--- USB Type C port with USB 3.2 Gen 1 for 5Gbps throughput in addition to DisplayPort 1.4 and sleep/charge also
- Backlit keyboard with zone lighting via OMEN Command Center
Overall, I would highly recommend this for anyone that is looking for a quality gaming laptop.

top designed specifically for gamers. RGB backlit keyboard (4 separate lighting zones) with emphasis on arrow keys for the right hand, 1080p 144fps display powered by GTX 1660Ti, 16 Gb RAM and impressive super fast 1Tb SSD - everything is optimized for the best possible portable gaming experience. Laptop has 2 fans which it does use quite a bit under the heavy load (machine can become a little loud) which help it avoid thermal throttling.
Laptop is equipped with variety of ports - USB-C, 3 of the USB 3 type A ports (one with ability to charge devices while laptop is in the sleep mode), SD card slot, headphone/mic combo port, HDMI 2.0a output, MiniDP and of course a gigabit Ethernet port (in addition to 802.11ax WiFi + Bluetooth 5.0 card).
I do fly simulators and this machine provides real smooth experience, no lagging, everything loads very fast (Even Windows boots in like 2-3 seconds!).
Upgradeability - laptop is super easy to open, no special screws, just #1 Phillips, back cover is easily removable for cleaning and upgrades. There are 2 RAM slots (2x8Gb PC4-3200 modules come pre-installed), 2 m.2 slots (see picture - 2 copper heatsinks, left one is occupied by NVMe SSD, right one is free). AMI BIOS is pretty basic though and does not provide any "overclocking" capabilities.
Power supply pumps out an impressive (for a laptop) 200W, battery life really depends on what you using the machine for and how loaded is it.
Overall - it's a great, very well performing laptop, I would recommend it to any gamer who needs portability.

After watching all youtube videos on this and reading many reviews I was so excited to purchase it. I play like two games and mostly would use laptop for design in fusion, solid works, and mastercam. I am two hours into this and laptop is running really slow. Just having omen app and geforce experience open it puts cpu at 80%. Also it doesn't detect GPU and my screen is all greenish color. It also can't browse any sites without lag, but when I do speed test it's well over 50MB. I don't even know why I am trying, when stuff like this happens I just feel violated honestly. $1300 is so much money, but put money away my time is valuable. If someone gave me this laptop for free with this performance of honestly just throw it in the garbage. But because this cost me time and money now I got to spend more time to go and try to get my money back. Bye I bought this because I have HP omen desktop. Best computer I have ever had, but this is really disappointing.

I had an Omen a couple of years back and I think the newer designs and logo actually look better.
At 1st glance you wouldn't even think it is a gaming laptop, and I love that fact! It's a complete sleeper!
As there are many other reviews, I won't bore you with the specs and some of the benchmarks of the HDD and 1660 TI.
When I received this at my front door, I could quickly see FEDEX went to town on this box. Being packed into a slightly larger box with no padding scared me to death. 2 of the back corners of the laptop box itself were crushed. Not gonna lie, my heart sank. But, this is NOT a review of logistics, so let's talk about it's durability. Upon opening the box, I noticed the Omen itself is off center and inside it's own little cutout away from any potential damage. The crushed corners were on the side where the power brick is housed.
I took out the laptop, plugged it in and noticed 0 damage and fired it up. Everything was beautiful!
Something I did notice was screen wobble. If i moved the laptop or accidentally hit the desk the screen would wobble back and forth slightly for an average of 2-3 seconds.
While setting up Windows, I was pleasantly surprised to find out how little bloatware is preinstalled. I just uninstalled McAfee as it was the only thing I wouldn't use.
Couple of things to note. Screen is 144hz @ 1080 and comes with 16GB of DDR4 @ 3200. woot woot
With GeForce Experience, I noticed it just loves to max out every single setting for my games. I tested BFV, Subnautica, Fallout 4 and Skyrim for fun. Using Ultra settings, Skyrim and Fallout basically lock @ 60 FPS (in case you don't know, it's capped at 60 unless you mod it). Buttery smooth gameplay. BFV averages 45-50 on Ultra but 100+ using slightly lower settings mixing High and Medium. Subnautica depending on biome would vary between 70-144.
Laptop gets warm to almost hot, but the fans kick in before burns and are LOUD. Usually will be about 20 seconds before shutting themselves off.
Using HDMI out you can connect to a 4k display for enhanced gaming, but you are limited to the hardware. Settings would have to be toned down to medium for decent framerates.
Overall with the price point and portability of this gaming machine, I would highly recommend it to anyone shopping around. At the time of this review, it's even on sale for an extra 150 off!

HP has a winner in the new 2020 Omen

I have to say that HP has a winner here. This laptop is a real pleasure to use. Scratch that. This is the most professional laptop I've ever used, and this includes a previously used HP Envy 2-in-1 laptop. That laptop was great, but this laptop, jeez, it is crazy good. I can test every video game under the sun and provide the performance results, but the quality of this computer is not really about its components. I can find you a least a dozen laptops that contain the specifications of the HP Omen (Ryzen 7 4800H, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB M.2 SSD, 15.6", GeForce GTX 1660Ti) and they will all perform the same (within a few percentage points). What is amazing about this laptop is just the quality. The screen is absolutely beautiful. The 144Hz FreeSync really makes games pop. Even using the laptop for just regular tasks is such a pleasure. One thing they got PERFECT was the fact that you can open the lid with one hand. THANK YOU HP!!! The keyboard, oh my, the keyboard is just spectacular. I've never typed on such a quality keyboard before. One really excellent feature for the gamers out there is that the keyboard lights up with full customization. The WASD keys will light up in a separate color (controlled with the OMEN app), the standard keys for movement in an FPS game. The touchpad...oh jeez...QUALITY! Smooth, easy to click, QUIET. It's clicky but not SO clicky. There is a dedicated calculator button (YES!), print screen (YES!), and the context menu button (YESSSS!!!!!). The port offerings are great - 3 USB type A, 1 USB Type C, 1 full HDMI, 1 display port, 1 media card port, and 1 gigabit ethernet. I can't think of another port I'd might need. I'm glad they didn't go the way of Dell XPS machines and offer ports via a dongle through the USB C port. The SOUND. For a laptop the sound is amazing. So clear, good (enough) bass. And with all this, you get this really portable and light laptop that is priced very reasonably.
One very big positive is that HP has pre-installed almost no bloat on the computer. Just one thing for ExpressVPN and one thing of McAfee, both of which are easily removed. Beyond that is the standard Windows 10 bloat (games, Office trial, etc.).
Of course not everything is perfect, but the problems are manageable and forgettable. The first glaring negative is the power port. HP has chosen to, with a 2020 model, power the laptop with a standard metal plug, not USB Type C. I have to assume that this decision was made to fulfill the possibly power requirements for the Ryzen 7 4800H, among other components, when gaming. The next not-so-glaring problem is the design of the keyboard. Since this is being billed as full gaming laptop, HP has chosen to provide a keyboard that matches the layout of a full keyboard, minus the numpad. The Insert/Home/PgDn/PgUp/End/Pause buttons are like a full keyboard. The arrow keys are like a full keyboard. The right shift and right CTRL/ALT keys are like a full keyboard. It is hard to get used to coming from a laptop-style keyboard. Everytime I am expecting to hit the arrow keys, I'm instead hitting the right CTRL/ALT keys because that is usually where a laptop would place those keys. It takes a long time to train yourself (as of this writing, I've only had the laptop for 3 or so days, and I'm still training myself). The final not-such-a-big-deal problem is the lack of a touchscreen. Coming from a 2-in-1 to this laptop, I have to retrain myself for a laptop lacking touch. Like I said, its not a big deal because this is a gaming laptop.
When buying the laptop just be aware of these limitations. Gaming laptops are very powerful, which will help the video and image editors out there because of the power, but just be aware that the standard features such editors may enjoy (touchscreen, laptop keyboard layout, for example) do not exist here.
Do I recommend the laptop? Even if you are not a gamer, YES, I do. You are getting a premium QUALITY laptop, with great components in a PORTABLE chasis. So light! Add in the customization in the keyboard and you have a winning package. This laptop feels like something one of those big tech companies gives their top execs. 5 out of 5 stars.

I had an HP Envy 15z-j100 CTO that my son pushed off the dinning room table and broke the hinges from the top case (he's 4 and special needs.) so I knew I wanted something newer and I have loved my R5-1600 that is in my desktop. I was looking at the Asus TUF-506IV, but they are sold out and the version of the TUF-506 that is currently out is a cut down version with the smaller batter, a weaker screen, etc. I was also looking at the Dell G15 SE until I saw some of the reviews and talking about the thermals. And that for some reason has been an issue with the Ryzen 4800H laptops that are currently out. I couldn't find a review when I decided to purchase this, but a statement from HP confirming 90%+ of sRGB, I decided to pull the trigger. I am glad that I did. There are some quirks I have to get used to again (not having a num pad), but those are all minor. I love the design, it is a gaming laptop, but it's not screaming GAMING!!! all over the place and would be just fine in an office enviroment. The power/temperature managment on this laptop is a little perplexing to me, or was until I ran HW info and saw what was going on. Because of the extra headroom from the cooling solution, HP is allowing the 4800H to get a little about 56W in the testing I've done on this model using Prim95 and AIDA64. Even with that, I never saw the temps get out of the low 80's. The weird thing to me, is seeing some idle temps in the upper 40's, low 50's. but if that high end never creeps up, I won't repaste it. I do wish the backlights on the keyboard were a little more true to color, everything looks slightly pastel colors, but all in all is fine. The NVMe drive is par for the course and I love that there is an additional M.2 slot for an additional NVMe drive if I choose to add one. I couldn't be more pleased with the hardware on this laptop. The keyboard feels good for a laptop, the screen is nice, bright and shows colors very well. I don't get an light bleed. Per information I found from HP this screen is a 7ms response time panel from LG.

I think this year HP gaming laptop looked mature, doesn’t scream “ look at me
i’m a gaming laptop” that’s the number one thing I liked after opening and experience this laptop and it turned out it’s actually pretty amazing.
Pros
- the simple look of this laptop is a major plus for me, it does look out of place being placed beside my computer section
- comes with 144hz refresh rate, the laptop has that smooth feels to it, looks amazing
- I personally thought the keyboard felt great as well, spacing wasn’t an issue, did not give me any hard time when it comes to playing games
- trackpad have that matted feel was simple and didn’t really have any issue with it
- the laptop runs pretty quite when it comes to running video games
- tested Warzone and I got about 80-90 fps on the lower setting, which it was fine for me, the 1080p quality looked great on the monitor
- you also have the ability to change your RGB lighting through the command center
- this laptop is fairly lite weight i’m impressed
Cons
- there’s a flex on the front of the monitor no sure if that’s how it’s suppose to be or I got a bad gaming laptop, makes me wonder if it will be an issue in the future
- the camera was alright was hoping for laptop camera to improve by now but still very basic .
- it can get pretty loud sometimes when it la booting game, but it will eventually stop after couple of mins, I was playing Warzone and in the middle of the match the fan starts getting loud , like I said takes couple of seconds then it was done
- tested VR and was pretty disappointed that everything I do it just can’t handle it for some reason, I thought it did
my overall laptop experience was great I can still play PC games without a problem, you’ll just need to adjust couple of settings, also if you play games on plug the game was running lock 30fps on warzone, the laptop looks great, clean and it can definitely perform, thanks HP.

This machine is an absolute monster! Not like i9/RTX2080 monster, but definitely better than most systems out there. I have no issues playing games that even my desktop (8700k/1070) struggles to play. Now, is that because this machine is better than my desktop? Probably. Still, for the price (I got it open box but MSRP is still a good price) this machine is worth it.
Pros:
QUIET! When playing Fallout 4 (nearly maxed out) the fans are basically at idle. They're on and you can hear them, but we're not talking about turbine engine levels. They can get that loud if you really push the system but even playing Battlefront II at 144hz they don't max out.
COOL! Temps are great on both the GPU and CPU. These Ryzen chips probably have the best thermals I've seen on...anything! In Fallout 4, GPU temps rarely exceed 50C. Not sure about the CPU but it can't be over 50 either because the CPU fan (it has two fans!) barely spins above idle.
UPGRADEABLE! You can add more memory (16 is plenty for 2021 games though) and even put in a bigger M.2 SSD. I haven't taken mine apart (waiting for the warranty to expire) but I wouldn't be surprised if there was either a SATA or another M.2 slot in there.
SMOOTH! 144Hz display is veeeeery smooth. I've never gone over 75Hz and the jump is pretty significant.
Smaller things: easy-lift lid, GbE is nice, Wifi 6 is fast, not too "gamer-y" appearance, multicolor LED keyboard with 4 different zones of lighting
Cons:
Screen is "okay" at best. Not very bright but you shouldn't be gaming in the dark anyways. That's the trade for the 144Hz refresh rate. Colors are good though but I definitely wouldn't do art on this thing.
Fans are in a bad spot. You have to mind your legs when using on your lap or you'll block the fans. I usually put one leg right in the middle and the on the right side to kinda prop it up.
Power button is...on the keyboard? I've seen this with some budget laptops but am sorta disappointed that it's there on this thing. Oh well, just disable the power button in Windows and you're fine.
Performance dips by ~80% when unplugged. This makes sense because the battery can't provide enough power for the GPU but worth noting. Should still be able to play Minecraft or lighter games with the GPU throttled but nothing intense.
Battery life. This is expected. I only get 1-2 hours on battery if I don't throw any load at this thing which again, expected. That 144Hz screen and GPU take lots of power even when idle so don't get this if you expect battery life.
In short, this is a great system for the price (whether you game or do CUDA development) with a lot of power. Not crazy powerful (don't expect 4k60 out of it) but definitely a good gaming-on-the-go system. Despite its weird little quirks in the cons section, those don't detract from the usability and I still highly recommend it!

This one is pretty decent. I read all the reviews before buying. People that say the top part that you open is fragile, is lying. It's secured to the computer pretty well. Runs fast. The charger does get hot, and it doesn't hold a battery for very long, but I've had others with the same issues, so this doesn't bother me. the screen never had any issues like some have mentioned. The keyboard did revert to it's original settings only once and I have no idea why. I did change it back to the color I wanted though. I do miss the numbered key pad on the right side especially since it's a gaming computer, but I've learned to live with it. I don't use the key pad, I have always preferred to use a mouse. I like that everything is matte black. I do not find that it leaves finger prints like some others have mentioned. Just wash you hands. It's not that hard. I think it may leave prints if you have dirty or oily hands but I have no issues with that. I do think I'll install more RAM though. I also want to add that the speaker system is also great. i don't know why some people said it sucked. If you're a graphics person, the graphics is also amazing. I am normally an Intel person, but this one works flawlessly other than the keyboard mishap I had. Plus this one had way more advantages to it than the Intel one, which is why I purchased this. Would recommend.

Okay. Keep in mind this is coming from someone who uses a custom built PC with dual 1080 ti GPUs. So take that for what it’s worth. I game a little and do a lot of video / picture editing.
Pros: compact and powerful ! Will handle most games with ease. AMD really hit the mark with this laptop cpu. The 1660 ti is great. Stays fairly cool.
Cons: fans can be loud at times. But keep this in mind. Anything will sound loud on your lap. Most people don’t hear their desktop PC fans because it’s either a few feet away or they have the sound up. It’s not a deal breaker at all. Cpu tends to run warm, but it’s also not liquid cooled like most desktops. But once again. It’s not like it’s going to melt. The fans do their job. Battery life isn’t great. You can tweak your settings to get more battery life but let’s honest. If you’re gaming on it, chances are it’s plugged in. again, not a deal breaker for me. If you’re just browsing the web, battery will last a while. If you’re gaming, well of course it’s not going to be great.
Overall it’s a fantastic buy. I’d give it 5 stars but took one off due to battery life. I would say HP hit the bullseye on this. The 1TB nvme drive is phenomenal. 16GB RAM is plenty and the amd ryzen performs well. I opted for this set up over the RTX 2060 with the 512 GB hybrid SSD drive with Optane. I like the idea of mass storage. And not a fan of Optane. Would recommend 100% great budget gaming laptop with the ability to do anything you want on it.

PROS:
- Fast and efficient
- Sleek design fits into an “office setting” better than other gaming laptop designs
- RGB Keyboard with custom setting controls over 4 sections
- smooth, quiet typing
- decent battery
- fan speed controls
- Great ventilation
- gorgeous display
- Trackpad works well (for a trackpad)
- Card reader built in and plenty of ports
CONS:
- No num pad
- keys are a bit “spaced”
- matte finish shows EVERY bit of oil and fingerprints on lid
OVERALL (TL;DR):
Overall I think this Omen 15 (2020) is an amazing laptop. The all new design vs the 2019 model is a much welcomed change. The 2019 clamshell look and flashy logo was personally not visually pleasing to me but this new, sleeker, clean design allows you to use this machine not only as your awesome portable gaming laptop, but also your in office machine. This design allows you to be taken seriously in the office but also on the gaming field.
Gaming on this laptop worked well and no issues. Visually stunning and the keyboard can be used to game in a pinch, or hook up a controller (or separate mouse and keyboard) with any of the USB ports.
The airflow is managed extremely well and the noise is not like an airport runway.
It’s a great machine that can handle modern day games and workloads, you’ll be happy with your purchase!
UNBOXING AND SETUP:
Unboxing was pretty standard stuff. Well packaged and wrapped, the box includes manuals/warranty/etc and charging cables as well as the laptop obviously. Everything is wrapped in plastic and sealed for protection.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS:
First I want to address something that seems to be all over the reviews for this laptop. The lid. Specifically the “flex” in the lid. I know there is a guy who did a youtube video early on complaining about the lid and making a whole video about how bad the lid may be over time. However many others and myself have pointed out that the flex should not be an issue. The obvious reason is the screen isn’t glass so there’s no risk of it breaking there. And to take it further, it could be argued as a benefit to allow a bit of “play” in the screen if it’s bumping around in your bag. Personally I think it’s good because it allows a gap between the screen and keys so I don't have to worry about the keys putting marks on the screen, but I’ll admit, it does feel a bit “cheap” the first few times you pick up the laptop and feel the screen flex in your grip. This will ultimately be a preference thing, but for anyone unsure of buying, DO NOT let this issue make up your mind for you.
Ok, got that stupid flex stuff out of the way, let’s move on. One other minor issue that bugs me personally is the matte finish on the lid. I love the minimalist design and small logo, but the finish on the lid is showing every single fingerprint and mark no matter how clean my hands are. It’s just not possible to avoid marking it up in real world situations. I set my noise canceling headphones on the lid, ear cups down, and when I picked them up the next day there were little rings from the oils left on the ear cups. And I showered, I swear. A micro cloth buffed it out mostly but still visible. Fingerprints are worse, they show everywhere. (see photos). So if you're someone who doesn’t like smudges, think about getting some cleaner or a cover or something.
But how does it actually WORK?! Enough about aesthetics, what did I notice using the computer as an actual computer? Well, startup was easy, I’m not really a fan of the “walk you through” setup that’s common now, but it is what it is. Cortana comes on and wants to “help” with setup and turn on a bunch of permissions and tracking etc. if you know what you’re doing, you can get through that and decline everything and eventually get into your windows machine. Once the setup was complete, I was pleasantly surprised to not find a lot of bloatware, and what I did find was easily uninstalled, leaving a clean ready to use Windows 10 laptop.
I quickly installed steam and a few games to test out. My hope for this machine was to have an option to still play games on vacation or when I’m away from my main PC. For that, I’d say this machine works wonderful. I played through some Tomb Raider (new), Modern Warfare and Destiny 2 to see how it handled. Everything was maxed or close to max and I had no issues and frame rates were good. Only issue I had was an internet connection drop that I later tracked to the onboard “omen command center” app. Apparently it was trying to speedtest and made my 100mb speeds drop to 0.5mb. After I closed that software my speeds came back. I don’t know if that’s a bug in the software, a setting I missed or my internet but thought it was worth noting.
I did not run any benchmarks yet or specific numbers because that can be found anywhere. I’m sure Linus already has a video showing you everything you need to know about the stats. But as far as real world use, I found this machine able to handle modern games and allow me to still play while away from my PC, which is what the average user is probably looking for.
FANS and AIRFLOW:
I am really impressed with the airflow control on this beast. The bottom is entirely intake with two large fans and elevated grill. Then there are 3 exhaust ports; one on the right and 2 on the back. Coupled with the fan controls available in the Omen app, you really shouldn’t have too many issues with temperatures. Noise MAY be a factor to some, but in my testing I found the everyday use fan speeds to be extremely quiet and the mid speed fans to be tolerable and the max speeds are...well you can hear them, they are fans after all but if you’re using headphones (especially noise canceling) you won’t hear the fan noise much or at all. You also shouldn’t need the max speeds for everyday use.
I set the laptop on the couch cushion to represent a “bad airflow” situation and with fans set to auto and default profile in the omen app, the temps climbed and the fan speed picked up to keep it around 73 C. I then set the fans to max and the temp dropped quickly a few degrees before finally I picked up the laptop and put it on a flat hard surface where the fans really shined by dropping it down almost 10 more degrees very quickly, eventually settling down around 33 C. The airflow in this machine is outstanding and will help keep your laptop running efficient, even in the most demanding situations.
MORE THAN JUST GAMING:
I love to sit and play games all day. I’ll even play games when I should be working! But when I actually do work, I work with graphics, video editing, and photography. This requires me to have a fast and reliable machine that can handle heavy lifting of graphics rendering, real time video editing and the ever so RAM draining Adobe Lightroom. In the few days I’ve tested this machine so far I can say it has handled this all very well for a laptop. It’s given me the ability to still get work done even when I’m out of the house or on location. I can toss this in my bag with the rest of my gear and instead of waiting to get home to look at footage or photos I can now put the SD card into the built in SD reader and go over everything on location and make sure I got what we needed before leaving. I can even start the edit if I need to. It really helps me be more productive and efficient in my work.
I really love this Omen 15 from HP, I think they made all the right changes and have an amazing, multitasking machine great for a wide range of users.

Screaming Fast Gaming Ryzen7 and NVidia GTX1660Ti

The New AMD Ryzen 7 based Hp Omen 15.6" Gaming Laptop is equiped with the Hardware you want for serious gaming running on Windows 10 Home version 1909. This laptop is VR ready and has a 144hz 1080p LG LED panel.
The CPU horsepower is provided by an AMD Ryzen™ 7 4800H with 2.9 GHz base clock, up to 4.3 GHz max boost clock, 4 MB L2 cache and 8 cores this is more than enough to run any current game. .
Graphics are handled by both Integrated AMD Radeon™ Graphics and NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1660 Ti with 6 GB GDDR6. Needless to say I was able to run all of my games on high settings with frame rates about 60. The gameplay is fluid and detail is stunning to say the least.
All that gaming goodness pushed out onto a LG LED 15.6” Display running at 1080p (1920×1080) and144 Hz. This is an IPS anti-glare matte panel with 300 nits brightness and 72% NTSC. I like this panel, while it is not as bright as a few others, I did not feel it needed to be any brighter.
The Audio is by Bang & Olufsen the speakers are near the right and left rear sides and provide adequate sound if you don't want to wear a headset. The sound is pretty good but not what I would call high fidelity, the base is lacking but for gaming the vocals are surprisingly good while allowing background music and sound effects.
With 16 GB DDR4-3200 installed there is plenty of memory for any game or memory intensive activity you want but for those of you who want more this laptop can be upgraded to e upgraded to 32 GB using 2 16 gb modules according to my research they may need to be1.2v sticks so check compatibility when ordering.
You have plenty of space for games and projects from the get go with the included SK hyinx PC601 512 GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD. If you need more you can use the second empty M2 slot to install another NVMe drive! To access this you remove the bottom cover of the laptop.

For networking your can connect with the 1000 GB Ethernet or use the wireless Intel® Wi-Fi 6 AX 200 and Bluetooth® 5 Combo They both support Gigabit file transfer speeds depending on your router and environment. I got a link speed of over 468 Mbps receive and 197 Mbps transmit. This was much faster than my old laptop with the last gen wireless AC with the same router.
This laptop comes with the highest power adapter I have seen, a 200 W Smart AC power adapter. This provides quick charging. While it is powerful it remains a reasonable size and is well designed with rounded sides. The battery supports fast charge 50% in 45 minutes according to HP.
The Li-ion polymer battery is a 6-cell,70.9 Wh unit for up to
7 + hours gaming! While this is probably achievable with optimized settings, I experienced about 5 hours on max settings this is still great.
You still get a load of external ports one USB Type-C and 1 USB 3.0 Type-A supports charging other devices while computer is off or sleeping. 2 additional USB 3.0 Type-A ports. All of the USB ports support 5 GBPS transfer rate
You have several choices to connect external monitors
The USB-C port supports DisplayPort 1.4, 1 Mini Display Port and 1 HDMI 2.0a. The USB-C port does not support thunderbolt on the Ryzen 7 Omen unlike the Intel versions.
The remaining ports are pretty standard 1 Ethernet port,
1 headphone/microphone combo and 1 multi-format SD media card reader.
The Webcam is good quality HP Wide Vision HD camera 720p with integrated dual array digital microphone.
The Case is Mica silver with an aluminum keyboard frame, it is good looking and sturdy. The aluminum frame gives the laptop a very sturdy feel without making it heavy. There is space between the keyboard and screen, I think HP designed it this way to prevent the keys from marking the screen. This design does cause the screen to flex when grasped from the side while closed. I don't think this will cause screen problems but time will tell. The Air intake is on the bottom rear half of the case with the outflow ports extending across the entire rear of the case this gives fantastic airflow keeping the rig cool even during the most intense gaming. With the fans at max you could use this thing as a hair dryer!
The HP Imagepad with multi-touch gesture support is made by Synaptics, it works well but does not have dedicated right and left buttons. This gives a larger trackpad area but does make right and left mouse button game actions more difficult. My advice is to just use a gaming mouse while gaming.
The Keyboard is full-size, 1-zone dragon red back lit, mica silver keyboard with 26-Key Rollover Anti-Ghosting Key technology. There is no number pad, you can use the calculator by pressing the dedicated button. You can program the keyboard colors in 4 zones in the Omen Command Center.
The command Center is a combined Gaming and Settings App by HP, You can just use the settings portion if you want. In the Settings you can adjust CPU performance, Fan speed, Keyboard lighting, Adjust Network bandwidth priority and monitor system temperatures and network speeds. I would like HP to add a Hotkey for the Max fan and Gaming CPU and network prioritization, I am sure there is a utility that can do this.
The laptop is 14.09 x 9.44 x 0.89 in size with a weight of
5.42 lb
Hp includes is McAfee LiveSafe antivirus
And 1 month Trials of Netflix and Microsoft Office 365.
Hp provides 1 year limited hardware warranty support) with 90 day phone support (from date of purchase) and complimentary chat support within warranty period
Overall I really like this laptop. HP has made smart choices to put together a really solid gaming rig with great build quality. This Gaming Centric Laptop is a great performer for a great price. You will not be disappointed
I have attached a few benchmark photos to this review.

If you're not used to premium build quality and materials this is probably the best gaming laptop under $1400. Ridiculously fast processor and plenty fast GPU. Awesome display and upgradability (you can upgrade both RAM and SSD). Keyboard is very good, although I like Mac's and Lenovo more. But what is the most important is that the cooling system is the best among everything you can find under $2000. Period. It doesn't get hot at all. It gets loud under full load, yes, but doesn't get hot.
And now the reason I returned it. It feels cheaper than I was expecting. Even though it has aluminum chassis it is covered by plastic all around. and that plastic is thin. No, the keyboard area is solid and doesn't flex, but the bottom and the screen plastic are very thin. I don't think it could cause any real problems, but I just didn't like the feeling. If these things do not bother you it is one of the best engineered gaming laptops I know
