Elegant, modern and powerful
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.First off, this laptop looks like something out of a James Bond film. It is extremely elegant, and even the box it came in was designed with character. This tells me that every detail of this laptop was intentional, and that the designers put forth a lot of effort in making a beautiful product. It even came with a high quality carrying portfolio. The keyboard has a rubbery feel to it that gives it great grip when typing. (I'm typing on it now and it feels great). The keys click nicely and sometimes you forget you're on a laptop. The HP Spectre is not only elegant, but also powerful and very practical. It acts both as a laptop and a tablet. The included stylus is very handy. It has two buttons which you can program, and the stylus uses one AAA battery. Also, depending on how much pressure you put on the pen, the line will be thin or thick, which gives the stylus even more usefulness with certain applications. The only drawback in my opinion is that the laptop doesn't have a stylus storage, but that's a small price to pay for what you get here. Speaking of drawbacks, the webcam is not great. It is your typical 2.1 mp webcam, and it doesn't do great in dim light (as most others, I suppose). The processor on this one is an 8th gen Core i7 and 8 gb RAM, so you can run multiple apps with no issues. Especially everyday tasks. 256gb solid-state as well. The highlight of this laptop however has got to be the sound!! Speakers by "Bang & Olufsen" give this 13" laptop the BEST SOUND I'VE EVER HEARD IN A LAPTOP THIS SMALL!! I am not exaggerating, it is amazing. I couldn't believe the sound coming from these speakers. I was extremely impressed with it. As a bonus, the HP Spectre comes with a fingerprint reader as well as facial recognition software to make log in easy, depending on your taste. The fingerprint reader is small and unobtrusive so you barely even notice it. 1 USB and 2 USB-C included. The laptop is also very light and very thin, but with a very beautiful thin bezel display. This one is not 4k, but beautiful display nonetheless. Overall, I think HP did it right with this one. Whether using it as a laptop or as a tablet, the Spectre responds quickly and is elegant with every feature included. I highly recommend it!

Screen goes black and will not turn on
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. When I first got the laptop I was super impressed as it is very nice and it included the HP Digital Pen. I purchased it intending to use it for my school work- college student. By the third week, all of a sudden the screen turned black as if it was off. The laptop was still on which I could tell because I was able to hear it, the power button light was on, and it was getting hot. I tried to turn it off but was unable to do so. By the time I got home the battery was dead. I charged it and once the battery was fully charged it worked fine. Yet again when the battery was about 55%, the screen went black again. Now I'll have to go back and see what can be done about it. I went into the HP website and read numerous reviews which many people experienced the same issue and when they reached out to HP, HP could not resolve it unless they get the actual laptop. I haven't taken it in to Best Buy but will be doing so later. I DO NOT recommend this laptop as it didn't even last me a month although I barely even used it.

Good laptop, terrible glass
||Posted . Owned for 3 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I got this September 20th, it came with a protective leather sleeve that I keep it in 100% of the time that I am not using it, it works great, is fast etc. Where I have a problem is the little tabs to keep the screen from touching the keyboard when closed, rests directly on the glass screen and because of this, my screen is now shattered in the bottom left corner. I have done nothing harsh to this, merely just use it on a biweekly basis and somehow my screen shows up shattered. I did not purchase the warranty because what laptop screen shatters? Not only did it shatter but now the touch does not work. Incredibly disappointed in the strength of the glass. (did I mention I had a screen protector on it too!!!) My screen was cracked mid-November so I barely got 2 months out of a very expensive laptop.

Premium Laptop
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This HP Spectre laptop is a beautiful machine that was thoughtfully designed to be used in any scenario. It comes in an elegant box and is packaged nicely with a pen and a USB-C charger. The packaging definitely stands out as opposed to cheaper laptops and would look great as a gift. The laptop comes with a Quickstart guide, which I, of course, ignored, so it took me a few minutes to find the power button. When I got it on, I went through the Windows 10 setup which was very easy. I have a MacBook Pro and a Chromebook and Windows takes a little longer to set up but it was not bad. This is my first laptop with facial recognition so I chose that option over the finger print reader...I may change my mind. The laptop has 2 USB-C ports which I love, all of my devices and peripherals work with USB-C and I like the ability to transfer data and power from the same port. It's also less clumsy than the old charger types. I wish HP made a more streamlined USB charger though, the one that came with this is pretty bulky but still an improvement over prior Windows devices. The battery life is incredible. HP says it gets 21 hours of use and I believe it. I have not gotten the battery down to zero yet after 4 days of use, pretty spectacular. One of my favorite features on this Spectre is the keyboard. Typing on this is an absolute joy and unlike any other laptop that I've ever used. It's comfortable to type on and I never hit the wrong button accidentally. The letters on the keys are big as well and the backlighting is perfect. The hot keys are perfect as well, everything I need is right there. The touch pad does not perform nearly as well as the keyboard. Gestures cannot be changed in Windows settings which is a downer. Microsoft Edge is supposed to be the best browser to use in Windows 10 but I just don't like it. Chrome and Firefox are far superior browsers. The downside to using Chrome though, is that a two-finger swipe does not go back and forth between web pages like it does in Edge. Major bummer, could be a Windows issue? The touchpad is also not always responsive to two finger taps to right click. The screen, while not 4k, is beautiful and everything looks crisp and colorful to me. The speakers are fantastic, nothing earth shattering, but really good for a laptop. Music and movies sound great at all volumes and there are plenty of EQ options as well. The laptop works really well in tablet mode as well. It is really light and sturdy and I've enjoyed using it in all sorts of modes whether I'm at my desk, on the sofa or in bed. The body is very sturdy in a nice dark metal and brownish/gold finish that looks really nice. This is a premium laptop in every way. Facial recognition is hit or miss, I may change to the fingerprint option soon, but when it works it's terrific and fast. Mine came with a pen, which is nice, I use the pen on my Surface to sign up new clients, but a magnet or some way to stick it to the laptop would have been ideal. There weren't really any annoying preinstalled programs on here which was nice as well, I think I only uninstalled a few. All in all, I am very happy with this Spectre laptop and look forward to using it for years to come.

Beautiful but poorly manufactured
||Posted . Owned for 1 year when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It is beautiful, but poorly designed and manufactured.Mine is 14 months old and the connector which connects the charger is failing. This $10 part is not repairable without replacing the motherboard. This is the second beautiful HP laptop which has not lasted even 24 months without requiring major repairs. The last one had a problem with the screen....which was glued on and could not be replaced....so I had to buy a new one. you can see where that got me.

The best laptop I've used
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The HP Spectre is a great laptop. The sleek design has a brushed type metal body with hinges that allow the laptop to be used as a tablet - which is perfect for using with the stylus that is included. It seems to be resistant to fingerprints. The keyboard has a fingerprint sensor for quick access to unlock the laptop, a responsive and large touch pad, and is back-lit - wonderful for working in the evening while watching TV. The setup was easy - and fun with Cortona giving step by step directions on the new Windows 10. I linked it with my Android phone using Microsoft Launcher. I was skeptical at first, but have to admit I like the functionality on my phone better than the original setup. This laptop is fast, has a beautiful display, is lightweight, has plenty of storage space and all the needed ports - USB, micro SD, headset jack, and a small switch to shut off the camera lens. This is definitely one of the best laptops I've used.

Stunning
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have to admit this is a stunning looking laptop. Possibly one of the best looking I have ever seen. There is a bronze(?) accent around the edges that is just beautiful to look at. The feel is top rate, a very sturdy build. By look and touch, you can tell this is premium. There are some design elements that are very well done. The hinge is really well done, it blends perfectly into the laptop. There are angled cutouts on the back corners that host the power (left) and a USB-C port ( right) at a 45 degree angle for perfect powering without getting the cable in the way of other ports. This design is quite nice and I think the first time I have seen on a laptop. The laptop comes with a nice pleather sleeve and a HP branded Windows Ink Pen. The sleeve has a pouch for the Windows Ink Pen. Everything you need is there in the box short of a mouse, I am not a track pad fan. As for performance, the i7 Gen 8 is a great processor. The onboard/integrated graphics perform as well as can be expected for onboard graphics. Bluetooth 5 is a nice add, very minimal if any sound lag over BT. The 8GB of memory is almost a bare minimum these days, some cell phones have that much. Overall it performs at a really nice level. As an example, Fortnite (cringe) runs very nicely at medium settings. My son tested that part for me. I had no issues playing Rocket League, but never checked what the default setting popped for Rocket League. The 13.3" screen is beautiful, HP has done a great job here. It also includes Gorilla Glass on a FHD screen with minimal bezels. Ports: headphone, 1 USB 3.1 and 2 USB-C Now for my gripes, I was way too positive to start. I have to deduct a star for the touchpad and keyboard. The keyboard seems like the keys are oversized but measuring them in comparison to other laptops there really is not much difference. They just feel large. There is also an odd feel typing on them, it strangely took me back to Atari 400 days where it just never felt like the keyboard gave me that feel the key was pressed. Travel was very short to recognition, but it felt weird. Second half star deleted, the touchpad. It is very sensitive, almost too sensitive. It is large enough I would accidentally touch while typing. There is no shortcut key to turn off the touchpad either, I need to go into settings and find it. Even when intentionally using the touchpad it would pick up a second finger touch while my finger was still hovering above the pad. had my son test this also and he had the same results. Overall this is a really fantastic performing and beautiful laptop. I wish some extra thought when into the input to match the rest of the design. I am sure the trackpad can be fixed with software updates, but the keyboard will take some time adjusting to for me. YMMV. I would definitely recommend this laptop to anyone looking for a top of the line feeling laptop but would warn to test drive one in the store to make sure it feels good under finger.

Perfect except for the touchpad
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've had this laptop for a little over a week. I generally purchase 17" desktop replacements with gaming specs for my work. The problem with them is that I really don't like traveling with them. I tried traveling with a couple of different high end tablets but found that I really want a real keyboard regularly. Traveling with a tablet, Bluetooth keyboard and mouse wasn't the answer either. I had tried early net-books and found them unsatisfactory. Then I saw this and decided to give it a try. I like having an I7 chip. The hard drive is smaller than the typical 1Tb I usually want, so I went to Best Buy and picked up a 256 Gb UHS3 micro SD as a supplement. I got all 185 GB of my music and all of my documents on the micro SD with 40 Gb to spare, leaving the supplied hard drive as empty as it was out of the box. So far I really love the size, I don't need a large briefcase to lug it around. It comes with a vinyl pouch that holds the laptop and the included pen. It does not have a spot for the power supply. The power supply is very small and is a nice change from the bricks that some of my other laptops have had. I have used this in place of my work laptops this week just to get used to it and test it. It has done everything I do with a computer perfectly. I will admit I really miss having a numeric keypad when creating spreadsheets but I hope to avoid this when traveling. The packaging is great. The interior box looked and felt like something from a top tier luxury department store. Setup was quick and easy with Cortana. I answered a few questions, logged in to Microsoft, gave a couple of e-mail logins and everything was up and running smoothly. Battery life has been great, I have yet to use more than 1/3 of the battery during my typical work and home activities on a computer. Graphics are great while working, surfing or streaming. I was surprised at the volume and sound quality that came from this compact unit. Fold it over, hit the tablet mode button and it works great as a tablet too. This is my first 2 in 1 unit. It has everything my high end tablets have, other than the higher screen resolutions, but it has all the functionality of a full blown computer. Plus, everything is in one location. My one complaint is the touchpad. When scrolling graphics intensive pages, catalogues, photo thumbnails etc. it does a couple of strange things. At times the scrolling seems to freeze, when I try to scroll it acts as if I'm trying to flick the page away. At times it kind of quickly bounces up or down moving on its own to another location and sort of resists the scrolling gestures. At times I have to tap an extra time or two to go to a link. At times I stop the scrolling gesture and the page continues to creep in the same direction. I will say that I have experienced these behaviors on other computers but not nearly to the degree that this one does it. I haven't yet researched this to try to find a remedy and hope a software or driver update will soon cure it. While this is a bit frustrating, it is not a deal breaker for me. This is a full blown computer in a small package that also does a great job as a tablet. I'm very happy with this computer.

Spectre
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. She's a rose gold beauty! Everything about this HP is slick and slim. I didnt read the instructions, instead I just dove in and had to laugh because I couldnt find the power button which is flush mounted on the back left side corner. So after turning it on and Cortana walking me thru setup, which included fingerprint security (If you want) I quickly logged into my WI-fi and went to Netflix to watch Spiderman 3. My subscription is for 4K and the screen on this computer did not let me down...AWESOME! The Bang & Olufsen speakers needless to say are phenomenal, at full 100% sound there is 0 degradation and yes its loud. I then downloaded Chrome as my browser which was quick and smooth web navigation on this powerhouse is no problem. The screen automatically rotates to whatever orientation you have it in, just like your cell. When you fold it it becomes a tablet which disengages the keyboard, it's now in touch screen or you can also use the included pen, which unfortunately can't be stored in the compter but does have a slot in the included case. With 1 USB port, 2 USB Type C ports, a Micro SD, the finger print reader and camera I'm still exploring all the extras this little dynamo has, and am very happy with it so far.
