    Very basic PC notebook

I am one who has tried Chromebook's and do not find Chrome OS enough OS for myself. So I bought a Stream 11 and with Windows 8.1 it brings a full OS version with some drawbacks. First off the Windows 8.1 OS runs worse on this weak hardware then Chrome OS. So if your wanting a snappy responding Windows then forget this notebook. Otherwise the keyboard is great, the touchpad is finicky, and the screen is not good at all. Colors are washed out at higher brightness and don't even bother trying this notebook outside in Sunlight. Makes a great vacation/travel notebook for basics. Otherwise spend a bit more for a Core i3 or at least a Pentium chip. They are much faster then this Celeron. However, it does play HD video, and you can have a few tabs open in IE. Chrome browser eats up a lot of the 2GB RAM with only a tab or two open. Would recommend only as a second device not a primary notebook. As you keep using it, you will grow tired of its sluggish performance.

Average quality -- OK for inexpensive product

This is an OK product for its price. PROS: It's light and very portable. Battery life is great and the keyboard is OK to type in. HDMI port is standard size (no need to purchase extra microHDMI cable). CONS: touchpad is very low quality (whoever thought to do away with the click buttons?), Monitor is very low quality and bothersome to read for more than few minutes. Look is a bit like a toy (doesn't bother me per se). Bevel around the LCD is unnecessarily wide and looks ugly. The wrist rest area ends with a sharp edge so it can be painful to type for extended period (couldn't they make it more round?). CPU is not very powerful so it may seem a bit sluggish at times (I *was* expecting this on a sub $200 computer). My verdict: there are probably better products in the same price range that remedy some of the above cons.

This is an excellent product at this price range. It is a great alternative to the Chromebook mainly because you can install Windows programs and iTunes. I decided to go with this machine based on being able to install iTunes. It's not the fastest machine in the world, but I did not expect that at this price range. If you are looking for a small, cloud based Windows PC, you cannot do any better than this machine.

I feel that this notebook is not a great machine but it is all that you can make of a machine with such low end specs at such a low price. Before I upgraded to Windows 10 I had two occasions where I opened up the laptop and there was a warning that I was out of memory and something should be closed. But all that was open was the browser. I upgraded to Windows 10, which was a confusing process. Then after trying to use this site with the new Edge browser, and having trouble navigating to the reviews to write this, I installed the 64-bit version of Chrome and now I'm reasonably happy. I also tried out something technical for work and the machine didn't embarrass itself. I have to mention one more thing, the click pad. I disabled most of its features.

Easiest laptop to use simple and quick

I received this laptop as a gift from my godparents and it was all I could've asked for. It gives you a year of Microsoft 365 for free and also a year of OneDrive Storage which is great, but you can also use Google Docs with basically unlimited storage. It is Windows 8.1 and there is a free Windows 10 upgrade icon on the bottom right corner. It runs great, it is very quick, and I would recommend this to a friend. Brilliant notebook type computer to have Windows fully running on it, the first I've seen of its kind. All files should be uploaded to OneDrive, because it only has 32 GB of flash memory, which probably can be expanded with an external drive, but I'm not sure so do not take my word for it. I'm in high school and it's perfect to take to school, it's small and easily fits in my laptop compartment of my backpack.

Surprisingly Good Windows 8.1 Laptop - Great Value

I picked up the HP Stream 11 to compare it to my Acer C720 Chromebook, which is a $200 11.6" laptop running Google's Chrome OS instead of Windows. The devices are of similar size and both are $200. How do they compare? Pros: Runs Full windows 8.1 - The Stream 11 not only runs full Windows but does so pretty well, booting to a login screen in about 12 seconds and fully booting in under 30 seconds. You can install and run any apps you're used to: MS Office, iTunes, Photoshop, Turbotax, Steam, etc. Plug and Play with all Windows devices - All your existing USB devices such as Mouse, Controller, etc. including Printers will work with this device. Standard keyboard layout - Unlike Chromebooks, the HP Stream 11 has a standard layout keyboard including Caps Lock and standard function keys. Battery Life and Silent Design (Intel Bay Trail N2840 Processor) - This is a fanless processor, which means it is silent, with great battery life. The C720 fan has a high-pitched whine when it kicks on (though it rarely goes full-speed unless you "hack" the system to install Ubuntu). Build Quality - The HP Stream 11 has a more solid feel with less flex than the C720 and a better keyboard, and very slightly better screen (better viewing angles only) Freebies - Includes 1 year of MS Office 365 Personal and 1 TB Cloud Data, and a $25 Windows store gift card HD Space - 20 GB of useable space out of the box (vs. 12 on the C720) SD Card Slot - SD cards insert flush into the device with a spring-loaded slot, instead of sticking 50% out of the device like on the C720. Runs Minecraft - Kind of. You need to reduce all the settings as low as possible and cut the render chunk distance to 4 (from 6). It will be ugly and run 25-30 FPS, but it is playable. Cons: HD Space - Windows inherently uses and expects more HD space than Chrome OS and doesn't have as much Cloud integration. You will quickly run out of room if you don't move the recovery partition to External media and/or use an SD Card or USB Flash Drive. Thankfully these have become very cheap. I'd recommend getting a 32 GB or 64 GB SD card with this computer. Processor Speed - the Celeron 2955 in the C720 is Haswell-based and has about 20-25% more power in it than the N2840 in the Stream 11, and has comparable battery life. The combination of better processor and Chrome OS means that the Acer boots in 7 seconds flat and shuts off almost instantly. The HP Stream 11 is no slouch, but can't come close to that speed. Color/Design - The C720 feels cheaper in the hand, but the Stream 11 looks like it was designed by Fisher Price. I have no idea why HP didn't release a neutral option like Grey, White, or Black. That is a big mistake. OS - While Windows 8 actually runs pretty well on this computer, it is still a much "heavier" OS than Chrome OS, so this boots slower and runs web pages via Chrome noticeably slower than the C720. You also have to deal with Windows updates, malware and viruses, and the general headaches that come with Windows. The C720 has Chrome OS which has no viruses and auto-updates quickly easily. Freebies: 100 GB of Google Drive storage for 2 years (which may be more useful to you than Microsoft's offer if you already use an Android phone), 12 GoGo InFlight wireless passes, free trial to Google All Acess Music - YMMV on which of these offers is more useful. Full Office is pretty enticing but Drive integration with Android Phones and Tablets is extremely convenient. Overall Thoughts: The HP Stream 11 is an almost shockingly competent, full Windows 8.1 experience. The device is well-built, boots quickly, and performs admirably, all things considered. It can handle full MS Office, Stream in-home Streaming and some local gaming (indie titles on Steam - non 3D based - as well as older PC titles via GOG and older console titles via Emulation). If you can deal with the bizarre color decision and put up with a matte TN panel 1366x768 display, this is a pretty great laptop for students or as a second, ultraportable computer. Highly recommended for the value alone, but honestly after 10 days of use, I actually enjoy using this computer. Kudos, HP.

After three weeks half of the screen went out. The laptop had not been dropped nor did it ever get wet. The mouse pad was also pretty weird. Double clicking or right side clicking was a nightmare.

    Good internet surfing computer

This computer is pretty good for all that I'm using it for. I've had it for a couple days, and so far it's working fine. The only thing I'm using my computer for is facebook, netflix, skype, and other things that don't take much high performance. Here are some 'bad' things to consider before you buy this computer. 1. It has an entry level processor, which means that if you want to have more than three internet tabs open, you're going to have a slight problem. It starts getting a little bit slow at two. 2. The mouse pad is pretty annoying, in that it's not very sensitive for me, but my dad (who also bought the same computer at the same time) said it was super sensitive for him. So it's kind of a gamble there. 3. The screen part only folds back to about a 135 degree angle, so if I have my knees up, the screen is kind of hard to see. I consider all of these things to be kind of petty, and over all I think this is a great computer for simple things. The phrase, "You get what you pay for" is true, but I think it adds a bit of bang to your buck. I would definitely recommend this to a friend or family member.

I'm taking a few online classes and wanted something portable so I could take my school work with me, and this fit the bill perfectly. I only use it for web use and Word, and it's speedy enough to do what I ask. It's super light and has good battery life. I don't think it's appropriate for high-powered tasks, but for light use, it's fantastic.
