    Great laptop, when it works.

I work for Geek Squad, and I never thought I'd find myself buying a laptop that costs less than $300. I see dozens of those low-end units being returned to the store every week for under-performance, generally due to the customer not being properly informed that cheaper laptops aren't going to be able to handle whatever it is they want to do. I originally had an Android tablet, but I could never get used to typing anything longer than a short sentence on a touch keyboard. Frankly, I liked the color of this laptop, so I decided to give it a go. As far as daily browsing, Netflix, and e-mail are concerned, this thing is great. Given that it has a solid state drive, it's very quick and responsive. Just be aware that, as it only offers 32GB of storage (before accounting for the size of the operating system and accompanying manufacturer's software), this wouldn't work as your main home computer for most people. All said and done, this laptop offers about 16-17GB of free storage once the device is set up and ready to use. Having said all of that, I must post something of a warning. I have had to exchange this product out multiple times and am now on my third one. The first two had failed hard drive testing and had issues with wireless connectivity, and my current device is experiencing the same wireless issues as well as some of the keys on the keyboard have gone out on me a couple of times. It's almost always fine after restarting, but I find it concerning that it's happening at all, let alone that this is the third laptop on which it's happening. I'm not advising that you discount this laptop while shopping around, but if anything, ask your sales associate if they've heard of any issues with this particular device. I'm trying to go as far in my store as implementing a service where our Geek Squad will perform a free hard drive diagnostic on the device to ensure that the customer is getting a perfectly functional device before they walk out the door. It's a great little laptop for all intents and purposes, I just wish it was more reliable.

    Great computer for a teen

I've been using this computer for the past 2 weeks and it has proved great. It CAN play minecraft. Maybe not as well as some computers but what you have to realize is that it's only a $200 PC. It works great for the web and light apps that are available on the store. There are only 2 completes, but they are quite small. One is the track pad is very hard to use if your playing a game (like minecraft). If you want something that is easier to use then you should defiantly buy a mouse. the other is that if I'm in a non wifi zone I can't watch a movie. So a CD slot would be nice. The sound is great the screen is nice. And I LOVE the way it was made. I bought mine from the store it might be better that way because it doesn't get tossed around as much.

This is a really good, inepensive laptop

I love this little laptop. It has a cute design and does most of what I need it to. It has very little storage built in, so keep that in mind. Also, the trackpad isn't always responsive, so I got a wireless mouse (Microsoft Sculpt Mobile), which made the experience of this much better. For the price, this is a very nice little computer!

You can game on it... Read the review

My Dell XPS M1530 finally stopped working and I needed a replacement laptop. Now you are thinking, I must be crazy to use this kind of laptop for gaming. But the graphics chip that's onboard is better then the Geforce 8400M GS that was on my previous laptop. In order to play games, you need to remove all the bloat on the laptop. Here is what you will need for your laptop to game on it: 16GB Flash Drive (for creating the recovery drive) 1TB External USB 3.0 HDD 4 Port USB Hub XBOX 360 Controller (Logitech F310 Gamepad Suggested) Do NOT install games on the main hard drive, there is not enough space, always install to the external drive. Additionally you will want to disable Fast Shutdown and Fast Boot, turn off system protection and disable Windows Update. That will speed things up considerably. Don't remove the HP apps or you will not be able to create a recovery drive. You can't burn DVD media anymore. Performance Wise: I played some older games on Steam that had 3D Graphics and they ran reasonably well if you turn down the detail level in some games. You won't be able to play GTA V so don't try it. You can't upgrade the HDD, You can't upgrade the ram. You have to install larger programs to the external HD. Overall a great bargain for $199. Trend Micro and 1 year of Office was a bonus.

    Could use more memory

Not bad for the price but could use a lot more memory. I had to attach a USB stick to this one just so I wouldn't eat up all of the hard drive in the first month. Battery doesn't seem to last as long as it should either. Battery is internal-so if it doesn't hold a charge any longer there is no replacing it as far as I know, unless you take it back to the store or take the laptop apart yourself. That almost looks impossible. But for the price I picked it up for I am happy with it.

Nice and light for portable use, and you can't beat the price for a full Windows machine. Screen is kind of dim. Just got it so we'll see how durable it is.

Do not upgrade to Windows 10. It will remove the wireless internet capabilities. For some reason it removes the necessary driver, and THERE IS NO REPLACEMENT yet. I troubleshot with HP and they had to sent me a restore disc.

I've had several laptops, many brands--Toshiba, Compaq, and Dell-- and so far this is my favorite. So light and easy to take anywhere. The setup was easy. It seems much sturdier than the Toshiba it is replacing. I travel a lot, so this is great to toss in a carry-on. I don't stream movies or game, just write and surf, but for my needs it is perfect.

This little machine is amazing, but two things stand out: 1) The click action on the trackpad is really really bad. It only registers some of the time. I went into the Synaptic control panel and disabled clicking altogether and instead use tapping for everything. The tap functionality is quite good. 2) The built-in software is garbage. I removed all of the HP software as it was particularly invasive, although this will make restoring it more difficult in the future. I also removed the McAfee suite, though if you do this, make sure Defender (which comes with Windows) is updated through the control panel.

Wanted to try this for a change and I absolutely hate it. Slower than the acer chromebook. The updates were annoying and seriously no space at all. Definitely returning this and getting the acer chromebook instead. Had to buy a new device because my brother had broke the screen of the other chromebook. Goodbye Microsoft. Annoying and full unneeded programs. The mouse and the pad is not responsive some times.

    Excellent Basic Laptop

I've had this machine for a couple of weeks now and it has worked perfectly so far. Very easy to set up, the one year of free Office365 is brilliant on their part. Likely will renew that after the year is up (benefits vs buying the software are significant). The machine is a great size, screen is not much bigger than a tablet but the keyboard is very responsive and it all feels very solid given the price point. If you are looking for something to play games on, this is not it - the processor can be a bit sluggish but if you just need something portable for communicating, research, documents etc - this is an excellent value.

our imac decided it wanted to die on us, so we purchased this nice hp. the fact that it came with office was even better. the only problem is that the "gift card" isn's a gift card after all. You have to change your settings on the internet just for it to tell you that you don't qualify for the gift card that you are shown! other than that, it is a great computer!!

This unit is all you need as a small everyday web browsing computer. Nice design, color and features! Full version of windows 8.1 and 1 year of Microsoft Office is included! Great for kids, seniors and a secondary laptop. Battery life is great. Used the unit in bed and left is sitting unplugged overnight and the next morning was still ready to go with +90% battery left.

    Average in a fantastic way

If you are thinking about a Chromebook but don't want to be limited, then this machine is for you. It has the same specs as many Chromebooks out there, and an equally average screen, but gives you full Windows with the ability to install whatever you want (obviously many programs will suffer due to the specs). I bought this specifically for general use and to use Teamviewer to remote into work. I havn't had any issues at all. The screen is average, which is understandable for a $200 machine, the keys are fine though a little squishy, and the trackpad is decent (but you'll want a portable mouse). I've had no hiccups with word processing or youtube. I havn't tried games other than MAME etc, and they all ran fine. Overall I think this laptop is fantastic if you are on a tight budget or need to pick up something for a child or young student for homework etc. They won't really be gaming on it though.

Great performance for such a small computer

Needed a computer for office work right away so purchased this nice blue little thing not thinking much of what it could deliver. I am delighted by the performance, ease of use, user experience for setup and use. HP, INTEL, and Microsoft have done a tremendous job integrating all computing aspects so I did not have to spend much time frustrated trouble shooting anything at all. This computer fits my needs for a basic system where I can browse, remote access some apps, and use office work. The cloud services of both Microsoft and HP are superb and very well valued. The 1 year free Office 365, HP cloud storage, and McAfee protection was an unexpected pleasant surprise. Windows 8 is just fine. I heard issues upgrading to Win 10, so I will not even try to do it. Overall, I am very satisfied with this purchase and I highly recommend this product for students and regular work.

This was purchased as a Gift for a young user. I did some research and came to the conclusion that it would be a good choice. Before I give any computer or tablet I set them up for final user. My impression of this unit is absolutely perfect. It is responsive and will fit the needs of a much wider market than is targeted by HP. The feel, fit and finish is superb.
