I bought this as my main gaming PC, the value is great, and its a beast for gaming. I replaced my HP Omen 16.1 with the nvidia 3070 GPU which tends to get very hot when gaming and doesn't handle high end graphics as well. This Victus stays cool and runs my games at high graphics settings while never coming close to overheating. I use it connected to a 100 inch 4k Hisense television at 120hz. It performs great! Exceeded my expectations!

Amazing laptop. I'm able to game max graphics of most games and still get 120 fps +. The cooling on this laptop is also incredible for a 16 thread cpu and 4070. During intense gaming my laptop doesn't get above 70c The display is also super impressive. Its close to my desktop acer predator 2k ips display. All around incredible laptop for $900

Other than heating up while running a high power game, this is a very smooth easy to use laptop. Works great with my monitor. It’s the perfect GBs and RTX for gaming unless you’re wanting to play BO6 then maybe some issues. I highly recommend as this is good for gaming, school, cybersecurity, etc.

I love it, I travel with it and hook it up to game. I have played Overwatch 2, Baldurs Gate 3. I bought an external HDD storage, I would probably recommend a SDD external storage. Easy to use.

I enjoyed this product when it was heavily discounted to 850, for that price point it can’t be beat the only main drawback I found with this device, is the keyboard. Everything feels crammed and trying to type youll never know what key youre going to hit

HP Victus 16.1 Great for Gamers

The HP Victus 16.1" Gaming Laptop is a mixed bag in the best way possible—it delivers a lot of power for the price, but you’ll need to accept a few compromises. After spending some time with it, here’s what stood out to me:
Powerful Performance, With Some Heat
This laptop doesn’t hold back when it comes to power. The AMD Ryzen 7-8845HS processor and 16GB of DDR5 RAM make for a solid team, and the RTX 4070 is the star here. It handles demanding games like Red Dead Redemption 2 without a hitch, even at higher settings. I noticed some heat buildup after an hour of gaming, though, which makes the fans kick in. They get a bit loud, but they’re effective—I never had any issues with thermal throttling or frame drops, which is what matters most.
Minimalist Design and a Comfortable Keyboard
One thing I really like is the laptop’s design. It’s simple and understated, with a matte finish that doesn’t scream “gamer.” The keyboard is a highlight for me—it’s surprisingly comfortable and feels well-built for both work and play. I’ve typed up long documents and spent hours gaming without fatigue, and the backlighting is subtle and helpful. However, the trackpad feels a bit cheap and doesn’t always register my gestures as smoothly as I’d like, so I stick to a mouse.
A Fairly Average Display
The display is where things get a bit underwhelming. It’s a 1080p panel, and while it’s fine for most gaming, the colors are on the dull side. Watching movies or playing games like Spider-Man looks decent, but the vibrancy just isn’t there if you’re coming from a higher-quality screen. It’s not a dealbreaker, but if you’re a display snob, you might feel the difference.
Storage Is Tight, and Battery Life is Predictable
The 512GB SSD isn’t quite enough for my needs. After installing a few large games and applications, I quickly found myself running out of space. Upgrading storage is possible, but out-of-the-box, it’s limited. Battery life is predictable for a gaming laptop—it’s around 4 hours for light tasks, but heavy gaming cuts it down to about 1.5 hours. I use it plugged in 90% of the time, so it’s not a huge inconvenience, but if you need a laptop with strong battery life, you might want to look elsewhere.
Things I Liked:
Strong Gaming Performance: The RTX 4070 handles demanding games easily, and the Ryzen 7 makes multitasking smooth.
Comfortable Typing Experience: The keyboard is a joy to use—responsive and comfortable, making it great for both work and play.
Simple, Professional Design: It looks great on a desk and doesn’t have the aggressive gamer aesthetic, which is a plus for me.
Things That Fell Short:
Underwhelming Display: It’s serviceable, but colors don’t pop. It’s fine for gaming, but not ideal for media editing or anything color-sensitive.
Limited Out-of-the-Box Storage: 512GB fills up fast with modern games, so expect to upgrade if you’re a heavy user.
Fan Noise: It’s noticeable during heavy gaming, though it keeps the laptop cool enough to avoid performance drops.
Overall Impressions
The HP Victus 16.1" Gaming Laptop is an excellent mid-range gaming machine if you prioritize performance over flashy features. It’s reliable for gaming and everyday use, but if you’re looking for long battery life or a stunning display, you might need to consider alternatives. For me, it’s a solid gaming laptop that delivers where it counts—speed and gaming capability.

Great Laptop with a few flaws

To begin, I bought this laptop on an amazing sale. It was by far the best deal I could find on a gaming laptop with an RTX4070 laptop graphics card. It has performed very well in the past few weeks including hours of AAA gaming. I feel like it was a great purchase for the price I paid. For full price, there are a few "flaws" that would have annoyed me. First, this thing runs HOT when gaming. I am very careful to ensure the exhaust vents are clear to help move the hot air out. Second, the battery life is dismal when gaming. I get about 1 hour with the settings maxed. Last, the screen is okay but not great. I knew this going in and I am satisfied. By the way, I swapped to a 2tb SSD and 32 RAM using Geek Squad and they did a great job.

Good Computer, Bad Vendor

Computer is great so far but Bestbuy is an extremely dishonest vendor and I won't be buying from them again. They advertise a 2 year warranty on this laptop on the page but HP only covers one year and will tell you to buy their protection for $300, it's disgusting that they're allowed to get away with this.

Great performance with excellent temperatures

This laptop has great hardware balance with a smart selection of cost-performance components, and there are no noticeable bottlenecks. The CPU/GPU performance and operating temperatures are excellent.
The overall quality is only slightly marred by the lackluster screen and small SSD size.
It's a great choice at sub $1000, but at $1400 there may be other potential worthwhile competitors.
CPU:
The CPU is an 8-core 16-threads Zen 4 processor, and it runs at 60W under 100% load and up to 65W for short bursts. This is a mid-range laptop CPU, and its multi-core performance is about half of the 32-thread laptop CPUs from Intel and AMD. Its single-core performance is also a little lower than the high end laptop CPUs. In Cinebench R24 the 8845HS' single-core performance is ~100 pts and multi-core is ~900 pts, compared to i9 13980HX's ~125 pts single-core and ~1750 pts multi-core. Considering the other components in this laptop, this CPU is perfectly serviceable and well balanced. Additionally, the temperatures are fantastic at around 70-75C under stress tests.
GPU:
This particular 4070 has a maximum 120W TDP as configured by HP. While some 4070 mobile GPUs can go up to 140W TDP, there are hardly any performance benefits post 100W, so having the TDP capped at 120W is a good decision. The GPU once again has great temperatures, running between 70-75C under full load. Overall, this is one of the coolest (as in temperature) running laptops I've owned. I've had several higher end gaming laptops and they've all had very high temperatures - my other laptop at the moment is an Asus ROG Strix G18 (2023) with a 4080 GPU, and the GPU is always teetering on the edge of throttling (the threshold being 87C for the 40 series).
As for performance, the 4070 pairs well with the 144hz 1080p display and has no problems with modern games. It's able to maintain 2505MHz core clock under full load (at factory settings), which makes this an excellent 4070 sample, as many of the laptop 4070s are unable to reach 2500MHz. The 8GB VRAM is unlikely to become a bottleneck for 1080p resolution.
In the HP Omen software, the user can choose between Hybrid GPU mode (Optimus) and Discrete GPU mode (MUX switch). Choosing Discrete GPU mode requires a reboot. There is no support for Advanced Optimus.
Screen:
The screen is a bit of a weak point compared the rest of the components, with its official specs being 300 nits and ~62.5% of sRGB gamut. Comparing this with my Asus laptop, which has a 500 nits screen and a wider color gamut, I can tell that the Victus is dimmer and colors are less saturated. The overall screen tone also appears warm, with the white color appears to have a slight yellow tone.
On the flip side, the screen has good greyscale, with decent brightness and contrast properties. It also supports Freesync, and seems to work just fine in Hybrid GPU mode via testing the Nvidia Pendulum demo. Note that Freesync needs to be enabled in AMD Adrenaline software.
On my screen there's some slight light leak at the lower right corner, however light leaks are just about unavoidable for laptop screens, and this particularly one is not severe enough to bother me. It also came with no dead pixels, which is a refreshing contrast with the 3 Asus laptops I returned consecutively last year for dead pixels. Even my current Asus laptop has a sub-pixel defect, so seeing this HP laptop with no major screen defects feels quite miraculous.
Speakers and fan noise:
The speakers are on the quieter side and a bit lacking in bass, though I think they do the job just fine. The fans can be pretty loud while gaming, and can be a bit distracting as the noise level may overpower the speakers. However, this is a common issue with modern laptops, and I suggest using headphones/earbuds while gaming on laptops in general.
SSD:
SSD's capacity is low at 512GB, and requires replacement if you want more space, as it occupies the sole NVMe2 slot. The SSD performance is about ~3000 MB/s read and ~2700 MB/s write.
Battery life:
The battery lasted about 6.5 hours playing YouTube videos via wifi in Eco mode. CPU was using about 3W @ 30-35C, which is very efficient. For reference the Asus G18 lasted only 3 hours under the same testing conditions, despite having a larger battery.
Ports:
There are 3 USB-A + 1 USB-C ports (all of which are USB 3.0 5Gbps), 1 HDMI 2.1 port, a LAN port, and an audio jack.
There are no Thunderbolt ports, though that is to be expected from an AMD laptop.
Other components:
This system has 16GB of 5600MHz CAS 56 memory. It isn't particularly fast, but pretty decent for a laptop in this price range.
The keyboard does not support RGB lights - just white - which is functional for typing in a dark room.
The wireless chip is WIFI 6 (not 6E), and its speed is not that fast. It gets about half of the speed of the WIFI 6E chip in my Asus laptop (~350 Mbps vs ~700 Mbps) under identical network conditions.
