Hyper Drive port replicator

One issue I have encountered is the USB ports do not provide power. I bought the external Super drive and it would not power up through the standard USB ports. I had to buy an Apple USB C to USB A cable which solved the issue The USB C port on the Hyper Drive does provide power.

When I plug this device in it makes a hissing noise. I didn't notice this as I have a desk fan and recently tried it at home where I don't have said fan. This indicates there's a short in the device somewhere. I've tried it on my tablet (at great personal risk), my work laptop, and now my personal laptop. All three have the same issues. As the device is running it will create a ton of heat and for some reason cause whatever you have it plugged into to overheat as well. This has happened with a Mac, a PC and a Samsung Tablet. In the case of my windows laptop I use it for long enough periods of time that it will actually force a shutdown while not leaving records in the Event Viewer (power or BIOS shutting down to keep the processor from melting). When it is unplugged it will make the same hissing noise. When any device at all is plugged into the device it will get hotter and hotter until it reaches a stable temperature at 'uncomfortably warm' (I've never measured it). This is a bit anecdotal, but when I had it plugged in it seemed to make the computer run slower than normal. EX a download of the image editor GIMP took around 30 seconds without it vs it taking 1.5 mins with. Neither time was on WiFi. So if this was the cause this thing is messing hard with the motherboard. Unfortunately I didn't catch that this was the problem as the laptop was one I'd recently gotten and didn't know how it behaved. So I'm outside the return policy. I hope I can dissuade some of you from buying this product.
